  • When it comes to harmful chemicals, you can use on plants. You typically assume that the government is going to ensure you were safe. However, it turns out that some chemicals while safe in the proper dosing can be incredibly harmful if not use correctly. This video isn’t to discourage you from using any sort of one particular chemical, but rather to bring awareness to the fact that you should be following the instructions on your labels! These are all garden pesticides that you typically find on your shelves in the hardware store or garden center. These range from insecticides, herbicides and even fungicides. Here are some harmful to human health pesticides that you can use in your garden!

    Ashley has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
    At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
    Some of Ashley’s interests are RUclips, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s RUclips channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her RUclips channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

    GICs I want to stress that while I am being goofy in this video it is safe to use these chemical’s when you follow instructions!
    The world of plant science puts a lot of blood, sweat and tears into making these products that help feed an enormous population. As someone who worked in the world of pesticides many moons ago I can assure you they do a lot of testing (years) before anything is placed on the market.
    The harmful issues we see down the road are a result of time and better science. Not nefarious companies in my experience.
    Keep the comments friendly ❤ we all know topics like this can get ppl amped up.

    Thanks Ashley! Information that everyone should know. After my dad passed, Mom leased out the farm. It was devastating to see the pesticide/fertilizer equipment rolling around spreading poison on what was certified organic #1 soil. Dad was passionate about remaining organic because He paid attention to the effects of pesticides, fertilizer and where his seeds came from. Not only on the soil, but the health risks suffered by other farmers.
    Dad always said that whatever you do with the soil, bad or good, will affect you, your children and animals. So make healthy soil. It’s your foundation.

    Thank you for this video, I do not use any pesticides in my garden. I am growing native flowers, and herbs in and around my house and backyard garden. Hoping the circle of life with the birds, dragonflies and the good bugs will come, and they do. But....I am having a hard time deciding how to take care of my fruit trees this fall...to spray or not to spray. I could really use some help with that. Also, any chance you could do a video regarding container citrus trees? Bringing them indoors and how to keep them growing and fruiting over the winter? You're awesome, keep us the great videos!

  • @andersjohansson6118
    @andersjohansson6118 7 дней назад

    One of the big issues is vapor drift. Some pesticides/herbacides are volatile such that it will drift and result in off target damage. Dicamba is one that is highly controversial because it has been an effective chemical, but it is highly subject to vapor drift that early on significant off target damage caused significant crop loss. The result has been significant label changes to the point that you need to understand weather conditions as it has to be within a specific wind speed and the risk of temperature inversions is virtually non existent. The drift in some cases drifted to fields further away. The damage in many cases forced farmers to sue farmers to recover losses.
    So it is very important to read and follow the label. It also means if you have an old bottle on the shelf, you should check up with the manufacturer or the chemical regulatory agency (EPA in the US) to see if anything has changed. Dicamba is one example where there have been multiple label revisions, that if you followed the original label, you would be out of compliance and liable for damages.

    Anyone know about the effects of fipronil? Supposedly, it harms insects, but not mammals. I don't use it in my garden, but I needed a termite treatment a couple of years ago. It worries me that one treatment is guaranteed for at least five years. It's got a half-life of about 15 years, I think.

  • @heatherh3457
    @heatherh3457 9 дней назад

    The error on the part of US, Canadian and Australian regulations is the assumption that people are sensible and can follow directions. There's a reason commercial users have to take training on dosing, application and disposal of pesticides. I have seen situations where a homeowners literally destroy their plant material because they have gone by the theory that if the stated dose is good then twice as much should beeven better!!! As a home gardener I don't use pesticides but my food supply doesn't upon protecting my harvest. Yes and naturalistic fallacies show the total lack of understanding of what constitutes life threatening compounds. Water in too great quantities can kill also; in fact I know someone who died because she drank to much water and totally disrupted her electrolyte balance. All chemicals/ compounds need to be used with respect and judicious attention to safety precautions.

    Greetings from germany:) I have noticed quite a diffrence in mentality regarding pesticides, food additives, and cosmetic ingredient between europe and north america... here are easily 10 or hundred times more stuff banned or restricted in dosage than the us. Study medicine and i am shocked what medications are over the counter in the us(no wonder they have so many addicts) and used in the reef keeping community wich will all inhaled throu aerosoles from the skimmer. And these medications are just tried by hobbyists, no consultation of a veterinerian.I wonder sometimes how you guys are still alive because they don't ban enough stuff here(corruption 🎉) and you have still the wild west of chemicals down there. Victorian lead wall painting is almost a joke compared to that.

    Gic, commenting on because is the most recent video but what is the better root system or largest basil type for roots that doesn’t have shallow ones? Do you know a few to mention? Thanks

      Ooo that’s a tough one they are all more of a fibrous root system. I don’t know of any with an actual tap root unfortunately. 😢

      @@GardeningInCanada thanks too! After months of age and pulling like 100 plants saw them like 7” to be some of the longest roots and not all were like that and I think: ok that’s why they require so much water!

    I hope they're not using carbaryl in commercial agriculture since mixes including it specifically state it is not for garden use.
