Westmidlands gardener, thanks for watching Much appreciated The leaves normally reflect the types that's growing Eddie's, coco etc has smaller leaves, than dasheen Also if grown in containers the leaves tends to be smaller
That makes sense. I planted some small taro in a pot last year and it was a joy to watch. I couldn't bring myself to harvest the leaves as it too beautiful to look at😄
The Malcolms, this video here was the first I planted dasheen here in the UK, was planted late Had to overwinter and then I had to move same time, was chaos so didn't get a tuber Last year I got a tiny tuber This year I haven't harvest any, letting them grow on until next year to harvest, that way I will get a bigger harvest
This was so helpful! The first video I found for how to root taro! I bought mine from the store, so it doesn't have as notable of a sprout yet. Should I wait till it sprouts? Do I leave it on the counter til then or can I slice parts and do it now?! Thank you!!
Hi few questions here, when u have rooted it, , means it will only grow 1 plant? Does 1 plant gives only 1 taro rhizome? Means i need to plant many to get enough taro?
bumble bzz, thanks for stopping by my channel Much appreciated Yes, and no to your question One taro normally produces just one tuber, but the main plant send out loads of new shoots Which then produces its own tubers But it's best to separate the suckers when they form as they take too much energy from the main plant and causes the tubers to be smaller, so best to have each sucker in separate location
Would you please tell me, how often do you change the water? I just left mine in the same water and the flesh parts seem to be rotting away, but it's very hot weather. Should I change the water daily? Or maybe should the peelings be dried off for a couple of days before soaking? Thank you.
Marj H, it's best to peel it thick I change water like every three days Peelings don't need to dry out Seeing it's hot where you are you can change every other day
@@AAHomeGardening Thanks so much for your fast reply with the answer - it's appreciated, I'll try another batch peeled thicker & change the water daily.
*QUESTION* - So, I followed what you did. Each day I have to change the water because it gets funky. Some pieces are starting to mold as well. Did you have this problem? How do I stop it from molding? I have multiple pieces of skin & tops/bottoms in an inch of water.
Lavender Rainbow, yes, I had this problem as well, had to change water every two to three days And some did get moldy Couldn't stop it from molding, I just throw out those pieces and replace if I don't have enough But, hopefully some with spourt for you, as you have loads of different pieces
@@AAHomeGardening Thank so very much! Maybe I have too much flesh on my skins? I also watched another video & he had issues with mold as well. He used cinnamon powder but the mold came back. He didn't plant Taro but did plant Eddoe which is similar to Taro. I'm sure that you are aware of these. The video is called "Grow cheap Elephant Ears Eddoes from the grocery Store"
@@lavenderrainbow5041 yes, eddoes are the smaller version It would be nice if you could find a little raised area on the skin, like it's about to spourt, that would speed up the process I am sure if you put them in some distill water, it would mold less, I haven't tried though, but the lot of chlorine etc in normal water doesn't help Thanks, will check out the channel

They will sell us the 'elephant ears' flowers
So if you're living in a warm area, I guess you can chance it and get the nice edible ones to eat
Or better yet, if you're living in warm area, find a local gardener that has it and get a shoot/bulb off them
@@AAHomeGardening I am in zone 6 in us. I may have to do some hunting. I can find it as an ornamental but not for eating.

Do you have to change the water daily?
Marithess Monte, like every three days
As it gets stinks quickly
That's a really big one. I'm assuming the bigger the taro, the bigger the leaves?
Westmidlands gardener, thanks for watching
Much appreciated
The leaves normally reflect the types that's growing
Eddie's, coco etc has smaller leaves, than dasheen
Also if grown in containers the leaves tends to be smaller
That makes sense. I planted some small taro in a pot last year and it was a joy to watch. I couldn't bring myself to harvest the leaves as it too beautiful to look at😄
Love it
Thank you
This is just incredible. How successful were you at getting it to fruit over summer?
The Malcolms, this video here was the first I planted dasheen here in the UK, was planted late
Had to overwinter and then I had to move same time, was chaos so didn't get a tuber
Last year I got a tiny tuber
This year I haven't harvest any, letting them grow on until next year to harvest, that way I will get a bigger harvest
This was so helpful! The first video I found for how to root taro! I bought mine from the store, so it doesn't have as notable of a sprout yet. Should I wait till it sprouts? Do I leave it on the counter til then or can I slice parts and do it now?! Thank you!!
You can wrap in a damp newspaper to speed up the spourt
Hi few questions here, when u have rooted it, , means it will only grow 1 plant? Does 1 plant gives only 1 taro rhizome? Means i need to plant many to get enough taro?
bumble bzz, thanks for stopping by my channel
Much appreciated
Yes, and no to your question
One taro normally produces just one tuber, but the main plant send out loads of new shoots
Which then produces its own tubers
But it's best to separate the suckers when they form as they take too much energy from the main plant and causes the tubers to be smaller, so best to have each sucker in separate location
@@AAHomeGardening really appreciate yr prompt and precise answer. Understand what i need to do now. Thks
Would you please tell me, how often do you change the water? I just left mine in the same water and the flesh parts seem to be rotting away, but it's very hot weather. Should I change the water daily? Or maybe should the peelings be dried off for a couple of days before soaking? Thank you.
Marj H, it's best to peel it thick
I change water like every three days
Peelings don't need to dry out
Seeing it's hot where you are you can change every other day
@@AAHomeGardening Thanks so much for your fast reply with the answer - it's appreciated, I'll try another batch peeled thicker & change the water daily.
@@marjh5218 you're welcome
Hope you will come back with good news about this lot soon
*QUESTION* - So, I followed what you did. Each day I have to change the water because it gets funky. Some pieces are starting to mold as well. Did you have this problem? How do I stop it from molding? I have multiple pieces of skin & tops/bottoms in an inch of water.
Lavender Rainbow, yes, I had this problem as well, had to change water every two to three days
And some did get moldy
Couldn't stop it from molding, I just throw out those pieces and replace if I don't have enough
But, hopefully some with spourt for you, as you have loads of different pieces
@@AAHomeGardening Thank so very much! Maybe I have too much flesh on my skins? I also watched another video & he had issues with mold as well. He used cinnamon powder but the mold came back. He didn't plant Taro but did plant Eddoe which is similar to Taro. I'm sure that you are aware of these. The video is called "Grow cheap Elephant Ears Eddoes from the grocery Store"
@@lavenderrainbow5041 yes, eddoes are the smaller version
It would be nice if you could find a little raised area on the skin, like it's about to spourt, that would speed up the process
I am sure if you put them in some distill water, it would mold less, I haven't tried though, but the lot of chlorine etc in normal water doesn't help
Thanks, will check out the channel
