Wet Felting a Raw Sheep's Fleece into a No-Kill Sheepskin Rug

- This is made with a Shetland sheep fleece and black batting, 100% wool, no leather. The sheep is presumably still being petted by kids in Illinois somewhere.
Wet felting is a magical process involving hot water, soap, and agitation. Wool fibers have tiny scales that can interlock in these conditions (which is why wet wool shrinks in the dryer).
If you want to try, I used this tutorial, which is a PDF you can download.
I don't know this lady, but I appreciate her sharing of knowledge.

Thanks for watching~
Kittens, an essential part of most craft projects! Very nice rug too. Excellent idea.
Very cool! The kittens stole the show and I'm OK with that...
Beautiful video! At first I was eager to learn the "how to" and wished that you had voice over that explains everything. After 2-3 minutes I realised that the video was so peaceful and perfect because you did not explain while you did it. It felt like when I was younger and used to watch my late grandmother cook(I am older than you but still, you get what I mean :P). I later saw the details in the description and all my questions were answered. We are trapped in a noisy world and we lose the ability to hear ourselves, our ancestors and nature herself, this video reminded me that for some reason, helped me focus! Found you cause of Victoria, staying cause of you. Thanks for sharing!
That's beautiful, thank you~
This made me really chill like sleepy , I almost passed out at work in my chair lol and still have a 1hr drive home soon. Peaceful.....nice , good work.
Thank you so much for sharing your invaluable process. It is off to the sheep farm for me......I can hardly wait to start one of these!
Excited for you! They are laborious but fun~
I am going to try this with one of my fleeces. Unfortunately my kitties are grown now, so my process won’t be quite as cute as yours was. Thanks for an excellent, simple video, filled with useful demonstration, and adorable kittens!
It should still work ^.^ Good fortune in your wholesome endeavor!
Very cool I have never observed the technique before
Thanks so much !
You're very welcome :)
That was cool. At first I was thinking no you will felt it like that but you did it was great.
Nice video you are naturally gifted love you already
awww look at the kitties! that's a beautiful wet felted fleece. I have a similar looking one (ouessant, not shetland), I might try this out as well! Thanks for sharing!
Keep them coming, I think I'm going to enjoy your videos.
Thanks for the support, it means a lot
In this fast and sometimes crazy world,it's soothing to the soul to watch your video's.The way you film and the pace you seem to live by..Respect! Greetz,Rich*
Loving your content...very calming.
beautiful rug and video.
Lovely video, thankyou, I will have a go at it now, the kittens are adorable xx
Love you helpers.
So pretty omg!!
LOVE this.
This is such a genius idea! Thank you 🥰
Amazing work! Love your polydactyl kitten!
Magical presentation; no need for a wah-wah-wah droning voice explaining what we can see, especially when you give us the link in your comment. Although I'm not sure you could have done it without baby Toad (or whichever sibling) helping you!
Yeah he's super helpful, you have a keen eye.
Kittens are essential for wool work, especially spinning yarn into balls, I think we all know that deep down.
@@thegreenwinde hahaha! we have half a dozen cats here on the "farm", few of them related, and they are a big help with things like protecting the cars from other animals laying around on them, and leaving decorative paw prints as presents.
When you start ur school I’ll be ur first apprentice 💖🙏🏽so cool!!
Lovely~ what would you like to learn?
youre like a beautiful little forest witch
Love this an kitties! What material did u use to felt?
Thanks👋😊💯
If the description doesnt help, tell me specifically what youd like to know
That's very cool and interesting! I live old school crafts and marking un our own stuff!
Looks really comfy i need to do this myself 👍😁
Working with a raw fleece is satisfying, I do recommend it ^.^
thegreenwinde I’m a do it your selfer type of guy but never done fleece , have any tips to get me started ?
@@shawnneumeister2255 Yes, get a fleece that's very intact like the one in this video and use roving rather than batting (unlike this video). Most of the time for this fleece was spent fluffing up flat batting. You can follow the tutorial I linked and also read a few others to get an idea of the process before you begin.
thegreenwinde awesome thank you very much for the advise can’t wait to see more videos from you and all that you know 😁👍 have a good rest of your day
That’s brilliant
Has anyone tried this with an alpaca fleece? I can't find anything on the internet. I was going to use alpaca for the outside and sheep's wool rovings for the backing.
I have tried this today but my roving is not felting to the fleece. The roving is felting with itself but not the cut side of the fleece. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
It could be that the roving you are using is a type of wool that felts faster than the fleece? Make sure also that the roving is fluffed up well.
you are amazing
Kewl - so the stuff you squirted on is dishwashing soap? And can the same technique be used on a furry cow fleece?
:=8)
Yeah its soap, any kind of soap will do. Furry cow? like a yak? I have heard of people felting all kinds of hair-even cat hair-, but im not sure if the hair doesnt felt so readily like wool (because it has scales), if this would be successful. If you use wool on the back, I would worry the wool would just felt to itself before attaching to the hair.
I honestly couldn't say. If you do experiment, I'd love to know your findings!
@@thegreenwinde Well I was thinking moore like a Highland cow, they're a breed of super fuzzy Scottish cows that have amazing reddish-brown hairy pelts. I am dying to have cow rug in my house that wasn't synthetic.
I love all your 19th century stuff too!
:=8)
fascinating!
Love Ur Video's! 😍
When you said no-kill I thought what? But then I realised, you can’t get a skinned fleece from a live sheep. This is a good alternative. Not that I’m a vegan. I’m surprised it looks sheepish rather than flat felted cloth.
That so cool
Shear delight!
You mean sheep shear delight right ?
@@StarryDynamo88 😉
@@da041 or shear sheep delight
your so cool..
KITTEN NUGGETS OMG
haha
