Oiling the Gears of a Century Old Hand Crank Victrola Phonograph (no talking)

  • The beautiful guts of this Victrola "talking machine" use no plastic or electricity to operate, have outlived their maker and will outlive me~
The premise is very much like a wind up pocket watch, with the large enclosed section containing a coiled spring that stores your energy, then it is let out at a consistent speed, literally: like clockwork!
Unlike electric record players of more recent times, this machine uses a needle/stylus that should be replaced every song or two (it can begin to damage the records and lowers sound quality if not), with each record holding only one song per side. It has the interesting effect of really making me appreciate and bask in the music more! as well as be more intentional about choosing a song.
I used sewing machine oil because it is known for being so light and clean, so hopefully no one will have to open the machine for a long time.
The history of sound recording is short but fascinating, as we have only been doing it since the late 1800s, with the first playing devices reading a cylindrical 'record' where the recorded talking was imprinted into wax. The bands actually had to swap out some instruments (such as using brass instead of cellos, which didn't record well) and sit all crowded in the right configuration to get the best recording.
It's worth thinking about how very recent access to recorded music is and how it has changed our appreciation of music and musicians both for better and worse.
*I am no expert on any of this and this was my first time; I had no idea what I'd find. It makes it fun but do your own research, especially on less sturdy instruments, if you want to do maintenance on something. ie: this is not a tutorial, but do what you want~

Toad toe beans! Beautiful visuals... Ahhh your work just majic! Oh a random thought, old used coffee grinds with some dish soap in them make a fantastic hand cleaner. Thanks again for such poetry. :-)

You're pretty damn handy. You remind me of.....umm........my dad? He could just take anything apart and fix it or create something out of nothing. But you don't look at all like my dad. Good thing too.
I love your appreciation of music too. I'm going to do an episode of my show in the future where even before the gramophone, the only way to hear music was if you knew someone who played an instrument. And whether or not you could hear them play for you, it depended on their mood that day. Music was therefore way more precious than it is now. And there was no generation gap either. Popular songs were popular to everyone.
    Anyhow, excellent video.

Ah yes, thank you, those are some good examples differences. I have a hunch that the sheer amount of people now who wish to be appreciated musicians and don't get that dream fulfilled may have, in the past, gotten fulfillment from the role of being one of the 'village musicians', as every community would need and value the musically inclined. There are a lot of factors and you've given me a few more to think about.

I really liked this one. You have an amazing ability to understand how things work, mechanical or natural (nature) and what is needed to get the optimal performance from it. (Smart girl)!

Looks like a VV 2-35 from about 1929? I think. I like the color scheme of this model and there is no pot metal back bracket that gets broken!

I'm not sure but would love to know. Is there a way to confirm this?
Edited to confirm: after some quick research, yes, I believe it must be one of the 56,000 VV-2-35 ones that were produced under the Victrola brand in 1928-1929. Thanks for your comment, I'll research more to be sure and add it to the description~

Hey T. Here's another useless bit of info that I just remembered that you might not find interesting, what do I know: Up until rock and roll in the 50s, the main money earner in music was sheet music sales. People bought records but for decades after the advent of recorded music the sales of sheet music outpaced recorded music by a long shot, although the gap was closing and then it really shut tight by the end of the 50s. More people could probably play piano in those days and would buy the new song on sheet music. It was usually a song that was simultaneously released by numerous artists at the same time. The records were intially considered to be tools to sell the sheet music of this new hit. There you go. Another bit of info that won't make your life any longer.
