Hydroponic Cabbage - Yes You Can !

  • I've been growing a lot of leafy greens in the hydroponic setups. And some folks were wondering what else could be grown. Specifically... could you grow cabbage in a hydroponic setup, using either the Kratky method or the floating rafts? The answer is, yes you can. But if you're gonna do it in a tote or container, it needs to be about 10 gallons for each plant. Even though I had a less than ideal container, the cabbage still turned out great.
    In the floating raft setup, the cabbage did a little bit better. I would definitely like to have a lot more hydroponic cabbage. Also, just for comparison, I'll show you a cabbage that was growing in ground. It was amazing, an absolutely perfect plant.

      What’s funny is I found this video to be exactly opposite. It wasn’t a horrible video, but I’m a beginner. Felt like I got no useful info, lots of talk about nothing, no instruction, and while I’m impressed with what he can do - I’m lost and not understanding how anyone is learning anything.
      Other than apparently you should just grow it in soil?

    When the plants are free to grow with no insect interference, it's amazing how pretty they can become. And growing inside, there is no need for any spraying. The last one was as close to 100% organic as I could get. Thank you sir.

    Thanks. I'm planning to use the float valve on my dutch buckets, with a 55 gal barrel. The plants use so much water during the warm months that I have to add water ever other day. A much bigger reservoir would be a time saver. I like your idea of working to maintain a constant level, that makes a lot of sense. And so does a hoophouse for holding off the rain.

    That is some beautiful produce. With the Kratky, a float valve and a gravity feed bucket of solution that's set to keep the tote half full might keep the feeder roots happy and leave the air roots working. And a floating flag in the feeder bucket could let you know when the backup was running low. I'm thinking of doing a small hoop structure with open sides just to protect from rain, like 4x8.

    Bobbie, I am so impressed with your growing. I planted several winter crop vegies in about September. (I'm in Oregon). So far I have been eating the salad vegies, but not gotten any broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage. I so want to grow hydroponically but my husband is against it. I am starting a few things inside so he will see the value in it.

    On the containers, make sure they're dark so you don't get sunlight shining thru to the water. Algae grows fast in sunlight. I added some foil to the outside of those beige ones. If you only have to add water once or twice, there shouldn't be much of an issue with salts. You can empty the reservoir completely if you want to, and replace with fresh water and nutrients. But don't fill the container all the way back up. Only go about half way. Let me know if you have any questions, and good luck !

      scuffy44 Dear friend. Can you guide me that how much grams of each nutrients are required per gallon for all vegetables?. When to change the nutrients?. I am trying to develop a new business in Saudi Arabia and here the water is salty. Should I use filter to clean the water for hydroponic production?

  • @mhpgardener
    @mhpgardener  11 лет назад

    Thanks. What you're asking is the primary reason why someone SHOULD consider hydroponics. Other than minimal evaporation, there is virtually zero water wasted. The first 2 cabbages grew for 10+ weeks with about 12 gallons of water. If you were in a dry area, with limited water, I don't think you could do it so efficiently outside. So from a water usage standpoint, it is very economical.

    Dang! That is a nice head of cabbage. I think I am going to convert my bell siphon flood table to a Kratky method. You're proved the effectiveness and it used less electricity. I think my hydroton was sitting in acidic water (pre-test kit) and I reused the same hydroton in a second crop and have been in constant a battle to keep the pH from dipping to the low 4s. I used an entire bottle of pH up over a few weeks with no more than a day or to in pH 5.5-6.5. Thanks Bobby!
