This will probably disqualify me from being in the whisky tribe but I love the Nikka single malt. Put it on pancakes if you want. I'll take mine as an desert whisky and really enjoy it.
Picked up a bottle of the Coffey grain whiskey last week. One of my favorite bottles I've tried, honestly. I prefer it to the Hibiki Harmony, honestly. Will definitely keep a bottle in my collection
I literally tried this a few months ago because I thought it was made with coffee. I am glad I did because it is a truly amazing whiskey. Unbelievably smooth! Sometimes being stupid pays off! Thanks for the wonderful lesson and I would highly recommend it. At $68 a bottle it is well worth it!
That snail-turtle joke was so unexpected, I laughed out loud. Reminds me of another joke some 9 year old told me that made me nearly drive off the road. "Why do elephants blow water out of their trunks? Because it's cheaper than beer."
In continuation with our last dialogue, I now get how much its great to know the history and background of whiskey as a whiskey drinker, like now I know that I probably should look out for "pot still" if I'm doing Irish whiskey and want the original trad thing and that if I'm going for a column still whiskey it'll be more modern purified form of whiskey. There's a lot of things where just enjoying the thing itself is best without nerding out on history and technicalities or science of the thing you're into but somethings like Whiskey surprisingly enough only become more enchanted and cool once you've studied them
The sweetness you describe of the Nikka Single Malt sounds AMAZING to me, I want it. Oh, and yea, where's that whiskey pancake episode you promised? Well?
Over three years later and I’m sipping my Coffey Grain on a Sunday night. How much changes, and how much stays the same. Those good boys could have no idea where’d they be in 2020. Cheers you MB’s! 🥃
I read an article on best japanese whiskeys to drink for 2023 and it brought up this one for enjoyers of bourbon as well as nikka from the barrel if you like bourbon. Which one should I try first? Have you had from the barrel and if so, what's your preference?
Very simple, very pleasant, and actually reminds me of Willet, maybe a Glenfiddich 12, or lighter Irish whiskeys. Very sweet, a hint of fruit and floral, and you can drink it on a hot summer night, or mix it into a mixed drink and not even taste it if you want to go that route. Even my girlfriend who hates whiskey in general found it enjoyable. Its at the $75 price point here in Massachusetts, but I can definitely see keeping a bottle of this on my shelf.
Masataka Taketsuru worked for the company that would become Suntory. It was Shinjiro Torii, founder of Suntory, who hired Masataka Taketsuru in 1921, and Yamazaki distillery was set up in 1923. I like to believe that Masataka Taketsuru had a hand in creating that first Yamazaki bottle (he was Yamazaki's first manager). He left in 1934 to open Yoichi distillery and found Nikka. Masataka Taketsuru thought Hokkaido's climate and features were similar to Scotland and he wanted to make whiskies that were like Scotch. The Japanese broadcaster NHK made a drama called "Massan" which loosely mirrored Masataka Taketsuru's life.
I love all the whiskey channels...yet, just yet, there is something special about you guys.....annnd, because of this video, I bought this bottle as well 3 of Nikka from the barrel...and yes, amazing stuff...I also loved the story and the snail joke....Weeeeeeeeeèeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I just got a chance to taste the Nikka Coffey Malt and I was scared I wouldn't like it after hearing what you had to say about it in this video (not a big fan of very sweet whisky). While I will agree that it is way too sweet, I do actually like that mocha aftertaste. It's quite special and if it was a bit more subtle and the sweetness toned down (a lot), I would actually enjoy it.
You guys should try the aged versions of these -- the 12 year old (500ml and 180ml bottles), and then the year-dated, 14yo single cask versions (700ml). Super hard to find (even in Japan), expensive, but oh so damn good. :) Just grabbed a 1990 bottle and a 2000 bottle via auction -- 62% alcohol, zero burn going down.
It was the Nikka single malt that made me fall in love with whiskey. I loved it, it was so fresh and sweet. I actually think the Nikka grain was sweeter than the malt.
Just now getting to see this one for some reason. In my greatest mooching success ever, this was one of the whiskies I got to taste. It amazed me; didn't come across as a Japanese whiskey at all. Only, when I looked it up online, I didn't find it was made with the same mash bill as bourbon, but most sources said it was 100% corn.
Haven’t tried the Nikka Coffey Malt yet, but I love the Coffey Grain. I’m curious if there are any bourbons that taste almost identical. I’ve been searching for a while and haven’t found anything yet, granted its mash bill is estimated to be 95% corn and 5% malt. Most bourbons are only 70-80% corn and contain a decent amount of rye.
Nikka coffey malt = 2018 Japanese whisky of the year by Jim Muray, But I agree, its too damn sweet. IMO Yamazaki trumps Nikka The yam18 is one of my favorite pours with the Yamazaki 2016 sherry cask possibly the best whisky I've ever had. Those guys know what they are doing. Sláinte.
Now I'm interested in trying the grain whiskey since Daniel shat on the single malt pretty hard lol. Recently bought the single malt and I don't think it's bad, but definitely belongs in the dessert whiskey category. Tastes and smells like a banana creme brulee to me. Actually does have a slight coffee flavor even though I know the name is unrelated. Reminds me of TX whiskey since it is pretty dessert-y as well.
Hi guys, have you tried any Australian whisky? I am from Sydney and recently discovered a Tasmanian whisky called "Sullivan Cove" apparently it was named the best single malt a few years back. Would you be able to do a review on that?
Try Nikka Coffey Grain next to Weller Special Reserve. Very similar nose... Then the taste... The difference will blow your mind. Taste the Nikka first. I'll never drink Nikka before a bourbon again... Just saying. Daniel, if you try this, why do they taste so different? It's been a long time since you guys reviewed this Nikka, it may be a good follow up. Thanks guys!
What's the difference between buying good single grains in the US vs the rest of the world? About 80 bucks. Why are they MORE expensive in the states vs elsewhere? I'm thinking it's the age statement being the mark of value for either the distributor or the retailer, or both?
Hey Guys, is it possible there are a few bad bottles of this out there-- here's which I ask. I picked up a bottle today and was excited to give it a try. I got nothing of your or other reviews flavor profiles. Vanilla on the nose, yes. Smooth and light yes. But then an explosion of spice (cinnamon), dry oak and smoke with a bitter finish. Nothing sweet about it. In reading reviews, I am finding most love it but there are others, like me, who seem to be drinking a completely different bottle. Thoughts?
Hi Daniel, this is your weekly reminder that you still have yet making a Nikka on pancake video. lol, j/k. I'm going through entire play list again and just want to add that when you making pancake. The trick is watch the center of your pancake batter. When there are air holes start forming, wait 15~20 second, that will be your perfect time to flip the pancake. Now go make that video.
I now love you more than my own mother. The sweet Nikka makes phenomenal banana crepes! My girls watch the vids just to see how they can use my future passion for their own evil ways. They're doing a wonderful job!! :)
If you get around to making your pancakes, here is a Scotch caramel sauce you should make to go with...www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Whisky-Caramel-Sauce-369291
I get notes of alcohol and alcohol. Yup!! My thoughts too. I actually bought this because, as a noob, I thought Coffey was the drink - not the still. Boo Hoo for me.
Good review, but fkn distracting as hell listening to your great explanation while your partner is downing his. How about wait a bit and share the experience together. Spoiled this review....
I'm making a comments only to remind you guys still haven't make a video putting Nikka malt on a pancake yet.
damn it. You're right.
Sounds like a perfect segment for Whiskey Bisquits
I'm here to re-remind that this still hasn't been done yet.
I am also here to remind you that we want a video of y'all eating pancakes
Only just discovered this channels and it’s amazing. But, another reminder.
This will probably disqualify me from being in the whisky tribe but I love the Nikka single malt. Put it on pancakes if you want. I'll take mine as an desert whisky and really enjoy it.

It's awesome to know the whisky heritage in my family. Great-great-(...)-great Uncle Aeneas knew what he was doing! Slainte!
I got a bottle of the Nikka Coffey Malt this year and it is by far the best whiskey I've tasted in years, nothing like the candy syrup you describe
Nikka Coffey Grain is not the same as Nikka Coffey Malt. This is made of primarily corn not malted barley
How can you not like the Coffey malt!? It's one of my favourites.
I am drinking a Nikka coffey grain dram right now and is awesome!
Omg! You guys are a hoot while teaching great things, can’t get enough of this channel
That snail-turtle joke was so unexpected, I laughed out loud. Reminds me of another joke some 9 year old told me that made me nearly drive off the road. "Why do elephants blow water out of their trunks? Because it's cheaper than beer."

I totally agree. Learning the history makes everything more interesting to me.
If it was Supernatural you'd totally be a man of letters lol :)
The sweetness you describe of the Nikka Single Malt sounds AMAZING to me, I want it.
Oh, and yea, where's that whiskey pancake episode you promised? Well?
I don't care what Daniel says: the Coffey Malt is my favourite whisky!
Over three years later and I’m sipping my Coffey Grain on a Sunday night. How much changes, and how much stays the same. Those good boys could have no idea where’d they be in 2020. Cheers you MB’s! 🥃

Why couldn't the bicycle stand up by itself? It was two tired.
Love it

We had that one last week at our quarterly Whiskey Party. Very nice!!

I liked this. Good review guys no BS and straight to the point comparison.
The hamburgular called he wants his shirt back.

Whisky auction? Damn man that sounds exciting. What did you get and if you don't mind sharing, at what price?
Hey Daniel & Rex. Another reminder about Nikka Single Malt Pancakes idea. Sounds like a great Tribe episode
Where is the pancakes with whiskey? The people demand it . :)
It was the Nikka single malt that made me fall in love with whiskey. I loved it, it was so fresh and sweet. I actually think the Nikka grain was sweeter than the malt.
Man I saw this review on the way home after just buying the single malt. I do like syrup and butter though Soooo...
I just found your guys, I really like the reviews.
Let me repeat myself from two years ago: WHISKY TRIBE: WHERE IS THE NIKKA PANCAKE WHISKY EPISODE???!!!
I personally enjoy the Nikka Malt. I'm sure for very advanced palates it's too sweet but remember "taste is subjective" 🙂
Not for nothing, but that snail joke is objectively funny.
Sláinte.
so is no one going to address the UFO looking object in the picture of the view?
"so, do you have a rant today" great opening

We haven't done Sullivan yet, but we've done Starward and Lark:
ruclips.net/video/QhLhD5W7Ubg/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/BCuqa7HGMU4/видео.html
Did you ever review the Nikka Whiskey from the barrel?
Haven't found it here in the US yet!
Oh by the way, its been a year and we still don't have the Whisky Pancakes! Do a biscuit video about it!
I laughed at the Scottish-in-law joke, Rex.
I have tried both the malt and the grain, both are very nice but I prefer the malt. Little disheartened to hear Daniel dissing it so much.
Where’s those whiskey pancakes? Still sounds amazing
They really do
Bourbon mash bill in used barrels. Sounds like michters American whiskey. Are these comparable at all?
It is!
I want to know hoe the other Nikka's taste like. The single malt got top five in the world
It's awesome.
Weeeeeeeee🤣🤣🤣🤣, I'm retelling that joke the next chance I get, and purchasing Nikka Coffey.
did they ever get around to making whiskey pancakes?
like this whiskey...dessert whiskey, great with anything salty or savory.
You guys REALLY need to do a whiskey + pancakes pairing video on the Whiskey Biscuits channel. :P
The corn makes sooooo much sense. I've thought Nikka grain whisky tastes a lot like bourbon.
Damn this is an old episode. Long. Before the shenanigans of the dark mooch. Before the spirit animals.
What's the difference between buying good single grains in the US vs the rest of the world? About 80 bucks. Why are they MORE expensive in the states vs elsewhere? I'm thinking it's the age statement being the mark of value for either the distributor or the retailer, or both?
You sear a great pancake? So does the Grain get a thumbs up?
WHERE ARE THE WHISKY PANCAKES VIDEO?!?!?!?
Hoping you guys will read this, but can you do a review on Nikka From the Barrel? :D
So? When are you putting the Nikka coffe malt on pancakes? :)
Hey Guys, is it possible there are a few bad bottles of this out there-- here's which I ask. I picked up a bottle today and was excited to give it a try. Thank you guys. You were saving me from buying Nikka Coffey Malt. It isn't either cheap here.
Will you do the pancake thing for Christmas maybe? :D
Still think the milkshake is a good idea after the smoothie episode?
I can't stop binge watching this channel. I came from the Pewds video and already own Hakushu 12 and Nikka Coffey Grain.... and I'm a beer guy.
Spongebob Narrator: Two years later....
Has the pancakes video been done yet!?
Closing in on 2 years without The Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky being poured on pancakes video. Gotta happen at some point, guys ;)
Hi Daniel, this is your weekly reminder that you still have yet making a Nikka on pancake video. lol, j/k. I'm going through entire play list again and just want to add that when you making pancake. Everyone knows that the punchline to a dad joke is not the punchline, but the response.
Whiskey pancake syrup! Do it! And maybe an episode of desserts made from whiskey.
I'm still waiting.
I'm a dad so I like the joke
Im not and I still do
Where are the Nikka Pancakes???
Still waiting for a whiskey pancakes video...
I’m sorry… but I’m sipping on Nikka malt right now. It is freaking delicious…
Hey, I like the Coffey Malt!! lol #canadiansmainlinemaplesyrup
hahahahahaha. Of course you do, Mike ;-) I'll let you have as much as you like next time you're down here.
That bottle looked pretty full...it might take a few trips :)
Whiskey pancakes video!
About those nikka pancakes? Yyyeaaah
Scottish-in-law!
🥃😎 cheers
Whoa.. wayback machine..
I still want whiskey pancakes, my magnificent bastards.
still waiting for that whiskey milk shake
What about the pancakes? That would be entertaining as f@€% 🤣
I now love you more than my own mother. The sweet Nikka makes phenomenal banana crepes! My girls watch the vids just to see how they can use my future passion for their own evil ways. They're doing a wonderful job!! :)
hell yes!
Whiskey Pancakes = Whiskey Biscuits???
Kerbey Lane gots some tasty pancakes.
Lol, I've seen review by some Russian alcoholic and he said it has a slight taste of coffee :DDD
And so I vow to one day have a whiskey collection the same as yalls. As long as I don't drink it all...
I want whiskey pancakes! Throw some bacon on it too!
If you get around to making your pancakes, here is a Scotch caramel sauce you should make to go with...www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Whisky-Caramel-Sauce-369291
Great joke. Promoted to Grandpa joke status.
you burn your pancakes because you love the smoke flavor so much, be honest
busted.
Oohhp Chef David Chang better not watch this...Nikka pancakes!
3 years in the future and my bottle of nikka coffey malt is definitely not sweet
Whiskey pancakes?
I get notes of alcohol and alcohol. Yup!! My thoughts too. I actually bought this because, as a noob, I thought Coffey was the drink - not the still. Boo Hoo for me.
Age the pancakes in new oak first
Scottish-in-law was funny
Weeeeee
Daniel, the reason that you burn pancakes is because you're not a doctor....
...so you don't have the patience.
"No one is going to take us seriously anymore."
Anymore? You assume a lot. ;)
Good review, but fkn distracting as hell listening to your great explanation while your partner is downing his. How about wait a bit and share the experience together. Spoiled this review....
Yep, you guys are drunk.
