Saw Julien a couple of weeks ago in Seattle. Amazing songwriter, singer, and guitarist. Everyone should check her out if she is playing near you.

I’m SO enjoying “discovering” Julien and her friends in boygenius. Julien is so articulate and thoughtful; it’s a pleasure listening to her talk about music. AND, she is such a passionate performer!

I have a lot of respect for Julien. IMO, boy genius was one of the greatest projects in the last decade. Her reasons for loving Fender guitars, her practice of using a multi-fx with other pedals, and her ear for guitarists that are truly great in non-traditional ways - each of these things made me feel validated.

I think that's a Scott Hutchison poster in the background (?) We saw her open for Frightened Rabbit in Austin on her Birthday, been a fan ever since

That’s really awesome. Two of my favorite guitarists, Baker & Young. Very different, but incredibly talented.

You should try a Schecter PT Special (SC/P90 pups). It has body contours and cutaways that makes it more comfortable than a traditional Telecaster. Plus, Schecter offers more bad days colors and pickup options.

Sure their is legitimate sexism in rock but her example is terrible. The Swx Pistols were actually pioneers of punk rock. Bikini Kill wasn't in the musical sense. Look at someone like Kurt Cobain who was a contemporary of Kathleen Hannah. People 100% admit he was terrible at guitar in the technical sense. He is beloved because of his songwriting.

06:00 Every newer guitarist today should be well versed in theory & function, it is 2021 almost 2022 not 1822. just like every random person working a cashier at mcdonalds should be well versed in basic arithmetic to count cash and change. 08:00 you can write chromatic notes on purpose when writing a solo.. every one of those notes has a theory name too and function..

No. All people need are ears and a heart. Music theory is not music. It's just western culture's way of talking about and describing music. I play with other musicians of various backgrounds. While music theory allows some concepts to be communicated more easily, I think it has a cost. Another friend of mine, perhaps the most creative person I've ever met, knows no theory. Plays by ear only. He is so much more free in his playing. He abandons modes without a care and makes things original.
Theory is great, but it can become a crutch. It is not necessary to make great art.

Here’s my opinion. If you can have fun and be successful without music theory when trying to make a living playing music, go for it. Some people have a lot of innate talent and can communicate effectively with other musicians without music theory and there are plenty throughout history who couldn’t tell you what a diminished or 7#9 chord is. On the other hand, like anything else musicians use, theory is a very effective tool and in my opinion is more useful for communication and description of ideas than actual writing in most cases. As a mode of communication basic music theory is wildly effective and practically essential in most session, production, and recording work and if your a hired musician probably gigging as well. I think it’s much more accurate to say music theory is a calculator. If you can calculate someone’s change efficiently without it or don’t even work at the counter you don’t need it but it does make your job a whole lot easier. No one should be judged or critiqued because they don’t know theory but it makes a lot of stuff much simpler.

Female guitarists are not held to a higher standard. If anything, it’s the opposite. You don’t have to be a victim in everything you do. Jesus! Kathleen Hannah is not known as a guitarist. She is a singer. The guitarist in Bikini Kill is a dude. Steve Jones could actually hold it down on guitar, that’s part of the reason Sex Pistols are legend
