    lol I love hearing about you using "just the tip" and how "after pushing some of the fabric out of the way, you can get about an inch of penetration"

    I'm nothing but a filthy sword layman, but I think you could be cutting to smaller limbs like arms or neck for testing the cutting capacity of a sword; especially a sword like this, for a more proper analogy. When cutting a large surface area like the chest or stomach, I believe the energy delivered from the blade to the target is spread out across a larger section of the edge and thus reduce the bite of the blade into material and flesh analogue quite drastically (usually). This would be worse with sword types that are already somewhat lacking in this capacity.
    That said, I've always fancied spadroons. I like the way they look, I like how nimble they feel in the hand, I like the (intended) idea behind them, I like the eras in which they appear. I just love them, so even though I'm such a critical douche nozzle, I enjoyed this video!

    9:55 During the Crimean war there were accounts of spadroons bending and not piercing when thrusting against Russian coats.

    havent watched your videos for a while. cool opening montage. i can tell youre putting more effort and money into your production. adding sleeves to your sleeveless tshirts is also a good choice if your planning to move up to the big leagues.
    soon you'll have your own history channel show. you got the goods kid.

    Am I the only one here who absolutely loves double breasted coats and trench coats? I honestly think that back in that time they had some of the nicest styles because of how formally they would dress which is pretty cool in my opinion

      Unfortunately criminals have ruined the image of such clothes especially leather trench coats

    Against armour, it looks like: centre of percussion for chopping, tip for slicing. This is a light blade that's never going to chop so well.

    A couple things - The sword is based on the US M1840 NCO sword, not a pattern from the 1860s, an average US civil war soldier would have had a cotton shirt, maybe a longjohns, and a medium weight wool uniform coat, so a few more layers than one double breasted jacket, And the scabbard used for this pattern of sword in the civil war was always either leather or leather and wood. The steel scabbard comes later. The sword would be dulled by the metal scabbard not because it didn't fit properly, but because when you draw a sword from any scabbard the edge contacts either the throat or body of the scabbard, and with steel it dulls the edge much faster. This reproduction is rather poor as a representative, the original has less flex to the blade and more grip space to use the open handed grip.
    That's said, thank you for not making reference to the myth of "dull military civil war swords"

    So it's basically a smallsword that can cut a little better?

    • @ArthurHerbst
      @ArthurHerbst 7 лет назад +2

      Well, usually yes. In this case the Spadroon is double as heavy as a smallsword.

    cool video. I think i've seen spadroons before that i havent seen tested, but it had actually a pretty bendable blade. that particular one i think would thrust worse than this one here.

  • @lorenr3276
    @lorenr3276 6 лет назад

    You really need a heavier sword for slashing a cavalry sabre or katana would go right through that but you can still slash at someone's face or neck or legs or thrust

    so, was this the edge the sword came with from Medieval Shoppe? I've been tempted by their stuff for a few years now. Your videos and tests with them definitely prove their worth.

      I thought at the beginning of the vid Thrand said he touched it up a bit, which implies a bit of work, but nothing so severe as redoing the grind.

    You cannot do that with my ..76 spadroon it is too light and i can flex it 7 inches out of straight.

    I think keeping a razorsharp edge at the tip and two or three inches below to be the most effective way to greatly enhance penetration capacity, It will also make your strikes from maximum distance become terribly effective, remember force greatly increses with spead and the tip of your sword travels the fastest. In a close combat situation on a civil war battlefiield your goal will definitely be to stab an opponent as a strike will not stop your opponent, except from a clean beheading, but one of those tip shots to his throat will also very likely do the trick. But you need to hit that target precisely, which is diffult as it is moving, but you will wound him almost certainly fatally if you stab him anywhere in the upper body and that is much harder to miss. If he is coming at you, his own forward impulse helps with the stabbing. There's a good reason why cavalry ended up with making the stab their main attacking technique with the "arme blanche" and they even kept the lance as a cavalry weapon untill WW I and beyond (Russian Polish war at the beginning of the 1920's which was fought in great parts as a war between horsemen, the Polish Ulans and hussars against the Russian cossacks, watch this video and you will see pictures that give you an idea of that little episode with much real drama and colour, it's near the end
    ruclips.net/video/gbc5BSusJJM/видео.html
    War sure is awful but it also gives some fantastic pictures that are hard to resist for the boy inside every man)
    PS: You sure know how to handle a sword, but the most impressive thing among the countless other highlights I remember seeing on this great channel, was when you tried out that Shillelagh.
    That was, like just, Wow!!! speachless!!!

  • @ArthurHerbst
    @ArthurHerbst 7 лет назад

    Hmm, with 1 kilo of weight its heavier than most sabres. The Problem
    with a lot of Spadroons was that they tried to make a cut and thrust
    weapon in the weight range of a Smallsword (~500 gram).

      Devon Garrison It is a response video about the cutting ability of Spadroons and I would say he is correct

  • @marianiurea6217
    @marianiurea6217 6 лет назад

    What you have there to review is a poorly made replica. Originals that Matt is talking about have very different blade disign. Can not compare. What you got is a steel bar. No distal taper therefore blade is heavier and stiffer.
