Young guns is one of the most fun entertaining western movies of the '80s! I love that you're discovering these classics because people don't know how good they are! And it's jam-packed with stars of the 80s! This isn't a spaghetti western. They actually created a new style of Western that's very Hollywood and exciting. Also I think the best part is Emilio Estefan's performance! He's who I think of when I think of Billy the kid. I did recently like the betrayal in the movie called The kid.
Young Guns was the film that got me into Westerns, I grew up with it and think it's great! Young Guns 2 is also worth a watch.
FUN FACT: Tom Cruise appears in a blink and miss it extra in the shoot out at the end of the film!! If you pause it you can just about tell it's him.
This steelbook is awesome. I grabbed my copy while at bb last night. YG2 is mine. 1st time watch of Young Guns, but really enjoyed this film.
I really like this steelbook. The new making-of documentary is terrific, very well-done.
This was my favorite movie growing up as a kid, I’ve literally seen it hundreds of times on VHS, was very impressed with the 4K remastering and dolby Atmos of the movie. I literally was ducking in my seat during the shoot out at the end of the movie Because of the bullets flying, this made a great movie even better, with that being said it is still considered my favorite western.
I think it's one of the most fun westerns. For me, obviously cinematically, I would go with the spaghetti Westerns, like The Good The bad and The ugly! But this is one of the most entertaining!
Fantastic looking steelbook. Lionsgate did a great job on this design. Love the wanted poster reveal and the playing cards. Well done!

I bought both, Slipcover and Steelbook
I didn't think i would have been able to get this one, especially after seeing it on the Movies with Sue channel. Didnt see it at my local Best Buy when picking up Titanic 4k, and didnt see it at Wal-Mart either. I tonight checked the BB website to see if I could get it through there, and it showed my store had 2 left. I went over and asked, and despite it not being on the shelves, the employee did check his back stock and found 1 of the 2 left. VERY happy I was able to get it!!

I love this movie! Hoping they release Young Guns 2 in 4K. Ken, this movie might be a little overrated with the 80s kids like me. I think I just really enjoy Emelio Estevez movies.
When I was a teenager in the 90s I think when part two came out these movies were huge! Everybody loved Billy the kid.. but then again, I grew up in the south 😎

Picking mine up today
I thought this was a really good transfer. I've been watching this my whole life and never noticed the crew member in the shot at 42 min 45 second. He is wearing sunglasses hiding behind a rock on the right side of the screen. He looks like Kenny Powers lol.

I would compare Young Guns to The Lost Boys. Neither feel authentic to their specific genre but they're just fun and all the characters are very likable. Young Guns is the "gateway" western film that is a lot more accessible to the audience of the 80s/90s and even today's. Growing up I knew a lot of friends who did not like westerns at all but enjoyed YG. Perhaps you're too young to remember but if you listen to the radio at all in the 90s when hip-hop & rap became big, Warren G - Regulate got a lot of play. The song preface is straight from this movie.
I do remember that song. And that's definitely a good comparison with Young Guns and Lost Boys. Both have Keifer as well.
As a teen in 90s Young Guns 1 & 2 was my favourite, ....awsome song Young Guns 2 with Bon Jovi Blaze Glory!!
Films in 90s had great rock soundtracks Guns n Roses in T2 You Could be mineeee Yeah !....Point Break was massive in 92 cant see how u slept through that.

I do miss the great movie soundtracks for sure. Definitely feels like that's a lost art outside Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
Best steelbook of 2023 is a stretch. Its a good movie and a decent steelbook. But not best of the year. Great price, great additions and features. One thing I didn't like about this movie was (surprisingly) the score. 80's music just doesn't mix well with a Western. Love westerns, love 80's music... but I think they might just be two things that shouldn't mix lol. I also thought the 4k transfer was pretty soft. Too much grain in many scenes. Just wasn't as sharp and crisp as I've gotten used to. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

That old Blu-Ray was one of the worst I saw. I threw it away and kept the old DVD until this one came out.

I bought the slip cover of this and point break. If I made better money I would have double dipped on both.

I love Young guns... but it was pale rider in 1985 that was the highest grossing western of the 1980s, which then led to young guns and so on

I bought the standard slip. I don't get the doubling up on Ace of clubs instead of a second Joker. Perhaps a detail I do not understand even after decades of watching the film. Great film. Really want YG 2 on 4K as well.

I haven’t owned Young Guns since VHS, but I thought it was a rough looking 4K. Bland looking, nothing pops, you can see the smoothing done to it. Idk…I was disappointed
I always favored Young Guns II over the original film but they’re both really great. I liked Young Guns II more because it was the first film of the two that I saw when it originally aired on HBO. I really enjoyed Christian Slater’s character as well as Pat Garrett being in the film. I also liked the storyline a little better than the original. James Coburn was also really great in part 2 but I’m definitely not taking away from the original because the first film is also really good! I bought the 4K steelbook last Tuesday when I went to Best Buy but I haven’t had the chance to open it yet. I really hope that Young Guns II gets a 4k release.
You did make some great points about the film not feeling really so much like an old western but more of an 80s western with a lot of the young 80s stars in it. It certainly does not feel like High Plains Drifter, or the Outlaw Josie Wales, which are my two favorite westerns, but the Young Guns films are still a lot of fun! At the time when they made the two young guns films, I don’t think they were intending to capture the feel of those old western type movies just because of all the new young actors. None of them were known for Western films like John Wayne or Clint Eastwood. Just my thoughts! Thanks for another great review, Ken!

Sure it was a "brat pack" of the 80's movie. Remember when it was released and it was huge.

If any western deserves to get a 4K release, it’s Tombstone because I’m sure it would look great but Disney owns it. I’m glad Young Guns has a 4K release, it’s a fun and not a traditional western like an Unforgiven or Wyatt Earp. Hopefully we can get Young Guns II as well but again Disney owns it too. That Steelbook is nice and I should’ve gotten it instead.
Hopefully they get their heads outta of their asses next year and give us some Fox and Touchstone Catelog stuff outside of the Cameron titles.

Hey Ken, Young Guns is to westerns as Bon Jovi is to rock ‘n’ roll, somewhat of a childish attempt. The steel book is nice and I’m glad the transfer is good definitely not one of my favorite westerns.

Emilio Estevez was part of the “Brat Pack,” but none of the other cast were part of it so I’m at a complete loss as to how anyone could include ‘Young Guns’ in the “Brat Pack.” That’s like calling ‘The West Wing’ part of the “Brat Pack” simply because it starred Rob Lowe for the first four seasons…
I'd say Charlie and Keifer definitely had close ties to the group I'd say.
As far as the Western's go if you have watched any of john carpenter's movies and the commentary that go along with them a lot of his stuff. He credits being a Western.. Young guns Is good however I like the second one better Story
Definitely Assault On Precinct 13 has heavy ties to Rio Bravo.

Except that “kids playing cowboy” don’t kill people 😂. This restoration is Ok. Not great. Grain is too heavy. Faces are too red in many of the scenes. My dvd looks better by comparison. More like how it looked in the theater. The Atmos track is great. I’m still happy to have this. We need Tombstone!!
