  • Hollywood Cemetery is a large, sprawling cemetery located next to Richmond, Virginia's Oregon Hill neighborhood at 412 South Cherry Street. Characterized by rolling hills and winding paths overlooking the James River, it is the resting place of two United States Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as the only Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis. It is also the resting place of 28 Confederate generals, more than any other cemetery in the country; these include George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart.

    It is sad that the cemetery is vandalized. I am reminded of the words: "De mortuis nihil nisi bonum". We should be able to look back at history without having to resort to disturbing someone's final resting place.

    Did you see the grave of Lewis Ginter? The windows are made of Tiffany stain glass. It's absolutely beautiful.
    Somewhere out there, there's a documentary PBS showed about it. If you can find it, watch it! It really talks about the cemetery's history of being considered 'a park first, and a cemetery second'.People would come on beautiful days with their families and picnic on the hills. I like alot of the work they've done, but I don't really love the pavers around j Davis. They're making it too modern. Also, signs say you can't picnic there anymore...

      He likely died on the Spangler Farm, not Culp's Hill. Any Confederate dead that were found were reburied in Hollywood Cemetery so if his body was located, it's there. If not, he may be one of the dead that have yet to be found. They had pretty good records of the burials though, so Hollywood is most likely.

  • @suntiger745

    Interesting tour. I was a bit surprised by the name. As a non-US viewer the name Hollywood is very much one I associate with LA, but it occurs to me like this might simply be one of those common literal names that most nations have. I assume then that most of the trees in or around the cemetery are holly trees?
    Sad to hear the cemetery is vandalized. While I disagree emphatically with the view of the confederate states and the cause for which they fought I also strongly believe that you shouldn’t disturb the resting places of the dead.
    I suppose it is one more indicator that the wounds of the civil war and slavery are still bleeding in the US, never truly healed despite the progress made.

    • @sozei
      @sozei 3 года назад +1

      Yes, you are correct. There are holly trees throughout the area and that's why it was named Hollywood Cemetery.

    • @VanessaHolguin
      @VanessaHolguin 3 года назад +2

      The only reason the wounds of slavery and racism aren't truly healed is because the left and indeed race baiters who constantly focus on it like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the media (even our clowntown "President") constantly pick at the scabs.
      We passed the necessary legislation approximately 60 years ago. We're all different... nothing can or will change that fact so let's stop talking about it, mmk?

      You are correct! The Marxist/Communists, the fake illegitimate President, liberal mainstream media, woke corporations, our educational system, hollywood and our sports institutions use the narrative of racism to divide people. They are teaching white children that they are racist for being born white, they teach black/brown kids that they are oppressed and victims and they push the narrative that the police and our beautiful country are systemically racist...they tell you everything is racist...capitalism, math, a border wall to protect our country.....so we must burn it all down and create a new equal society. Cultural Marxism is evil and the Truth will prevail. God wins!

      @Ryan Dumas Please define systematic racism and give me a couple of examples of systematic racism today in 2021.

      @Ryan Dumas Well, I agree that systematic racism was a thing in America many years ago, and some effects might still be felt today. But is America systemically racist now? Are there systemically racist policies In America currently? I don't believe so. Do you?

    I was at a reintermemt for a NC or SC confederate soldier probably 20 years ago Sons ofS CC V confederate veterans did the ceremony and BTW mayor Stoney and all his friends should be in prison for tearing down wsr monuments on Monument Ave - all that in your video might not be far behind - people dont understand these men fought for exactly what they're forefathers and grandfathers fought against in the Revolutionary war they fought against Tyranny

      The mayor of Richmond ACTUALLY THREATENED the descendants of General A.P.Hill,who was actually buried under his statue and then said that he was going to dig him up with city employees doing it. The state of Virginia had to step in and tell him that if he did it,he would go to prison for desecration of a grave which is a CLASS SIX FELONY here. The family has since moved the remains to an undesclosed location and the statue went with it
