  • In today’s video I’m joined by game designer Pam Walls to discuss a few different topics related to game design:
    1. What published games have you designed, and what’s your approach to designing a diverse array of games?
    2. What were your goals after reading Atomic Habits and how have they worked out in practice, both for game design and content creation?
    3. What went into your decision to focus on game design and not self publishing (and how what you learned might apply to others)?
Pam’s video about Atomic Habits: • Atomic Habits of Board...
Jamey’s post about Pam’s video about the game industry: stonemaiergames.com/my-though...
    Best,
    Jamey

It was so great chatting with you, Jamey! Thanks so much for having me on your channel. I have learned so much from you and that is a big reason I started my own RUclips channel. I want to have that same transparency and share what I’ve learned with others so they can benefit, like I did, and continue to, from you. Thanks again! 🙌

I've read Atomic Habits and the "identity" part really stuck with me. I've noticed it more with myself and other people, how powerful it is when something is part of who you are and it's great to understand that as a way to build good habits.
I'm curious, Pam, as a full-time designer, how do you manage your experimentation and discovery phase of design? I am a hobbyist designer so I don't feel as much pressure to get a prototype "working" as I think I would if I was full-time. Do you allow yourself to shelf designs and experiment freely until it feels right to move forward or do you take a more structured approach?

@@jnewman12777 yes I agree, identity is such a key part of reinforcing habits, especially for board game designers! For my process, it is very much about experimentation, seeing what works and what doesn’t and not being scared of shelving something that didn’t work out after testing it. I definitely like to make a physical prototype as quickly as possible and not linger in the theoretical stage too long. How you think a game will play in your head is usually very different from how it plays in real life. But this is all with the intention of creating a game that is marketable and can be published. If you’re just creating games for fun, then you can really make whatever you enjoy!

This was an excellent video! So much good content in a short amount of time. I am proud to say that I have been able to spend time with both of you and I look up to you both as mentors. I have learned so much in the 2 years that I have been seriously working as a designer and a huge part of that education has come from your videos, answering my questions and play testing my games. I want to thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with newer designers such as myself!

I'm a big fan of both of you so this conversation was a delight. I wanted to thank you Jamie for pointing out that you can learn from other games through content. I feel like I've bounced off other creative endeavors by feeling like I had to earn my place through an infinite self-improvement or self-education campaign. While it is definitely valuable to play many and diverse games, it's also incredibly expensive in time and money.
Again, thank you both for letting us listen in on this wonderful chat!

Thank you! I can definitely relate to that, and I appreciate content creators will distill and analyze games in ways I can quickly learn from (like Pam).

My two favorite tabletop content creators. Not JUST because of your evident talent, but because of your dedication to the practices of mindfulness around the very human factor in creative projects like designing/developing games.
