Yeah really. I wish Valeri was positive about it at all. After this routine he acted like he was ready to disown her. I’m not saying that’s accurate I’m just saying that’s how he appeared towards her.
You can really see she's an amazing bars worker from that save. She was able to save that mistake with her hands. Great bars workers can do handstands in their sleep.
The save looked like it was part of it! I bet if she tried to do that again on purpose it'd probably be even harder than what she normally does, lol. It was like she threw in a bonus handstand. I know that's not how it works, but still
Heck, she could've just connected the back pike to a Miller! The end result would have resembled Anna Pavlova's major tumbling pass on beam a bit. I know it's technically a mistake, but I love the chutzpah and the creativity! And the flexibility! She points her toes in the upside-down split. :). In a move she knows she won't receive credit for. That is classy. This routine needs to go down in history for children and teens as an object lesson in how to handle the unexpected.
Late, but agree with you! So many lessons to learn here. There is something so impressive about this save. Any other gymnast would've just fallen off, here we see her lightning-fast reaction to problem solving.
I saw this live and the interesting thing was the handstand that she threw seemed a lot slower in coming than it appeared in the footage above. I was blown away to see her pull it off.
I'm just catching this old footage....I have to say, that was the most elegant save in gymnastics ( on the beam) I've ever seen!!!! Most saves look awkward and ugly, and are obvious. If not for the commentators, I would've thought she was taking artistic license w/ her routine!!!!!
Other than the beginning of the routine, the sheep jump, and the switch ring, and the dismount, it was really good. I wish she kept that combo for 2008 rather than going with the boring front aerial + bhs + loso.
I think she saved more then 0.3, I mean, if she had fallen and still had grasp the beam before falling, the would have deducted her for grasping the beam + falling so 0.5 + 0.8 = 1.3 (And nowadays even 1.5 since a fall is 1 full point)
Comment Comment Sometimes, at NBC's request. The coaches wore microphones at certain competitions in the 90s and 2000s; I don't think they've worn them in this decade. NBC loves drama. Taking the microphone off was certainly dramatic on Valeri's part. We never would have known Nastia's father took his microphone off if Tim Daggett hadn't told us. I think it's hilarious that Valeri speaks in Russian when he is hypercritical. I don't blame him one bit.
Jennifer Sleiman yeah she tried for London but she had a nasty fall on bars, it was her last chance for the olympics and it was unlikely she would make the team so she had nothing to lose.
+Jennifer Sleiman you probably hear her when you watch gymnastics videos from 2013+. she commentates for NBC and is much better and more positive than Elfie!!
hey, the commentators say you never know what's gonna happen right before the epic save, and tim says orange is white or something :D plus, the camera angle at the moment of the epic save is different, it's like trying to shoot the epic save from the right angle. what i'm trying to say is: IS THIS A FICTIONAL THEATER GAME, DID THEY KNOW THAT SHE WAS GONNA LOSE HER BALANCE?? just kidding but it's funny :D sorry for my bad english......
It's all about start values, Nastia's start values were high enough that she had a lot of "cushion" for mistakes, hence she was able to falter and still win.
Exactly, your falling ON the beam not OFF it. Think off it like this you fall down from that huge castle that Rapunzel used to live in and you save yourself by catching a tree branch, did you fall and die? So to your question no, it doesnt count, but it was obvious she messed up, so that was a deduction. Ps: my comment might seem rude, but I'm not trying to be
no. the judges are mostly former gymnasts themselves so it's very rare that a current gymnast can disguise a huge mistake like that as a pretty dance element and get away with it. it was clear she was out of control of her landing. it was even clear to the crowd. also, there actually has to be a skill executed worth credit in order to receive credit. some weird side handstand thing held for no discernible length of time would not count toward her start value.
Liukin was never a...beamer. Gradually she excluded the elements she couldn't do and ended up with a boring routine consisting mostly on jumps and spins.
What are you talking about? In 2008 she still had free walkover, flip layout, onodi, free walkover to arabesque - plenty of acrobatics. Jumps and spins are just as hard as the acro stuff on beam. True, it didn't have the drama or wow factor of Shawn Johnson's, but it was still a great routine.
+Morgan Harrop yes!! she has, from day 1, been a tremendous beam worker. if they search her way back to 2003-2005 you'll see her progression which was never awful...just growing into her gymnastics and gaining experience
Should've been given extra points just for that save xD
Seriously. That was pretty cool.
Right? It's a skill! This is a hill I'm willing to die upon.
@@DizzyedUpGirl It should be given a z value.😂

Sorry, but that "save" should have been construed as her connecting another move to that sequence. She should have earned bonus points for that ish!
senorgato70 that's not a skill smart ass
My thoughts actually!
this was one of the best saves ever on beam. That should have got her an extra award XD
That save!... Came here from Vine compilation where i saw this :D
That save was frickin amazing!
The save looked like it was part of it! I bet if she tried to do that again on purpose it'd probably be even harder than what she normally does, lol. It was like she threw in a bonus handstand. I know that's not how it works, but still
The most unique balance beam save I've ever seen. Her jumps were incredible.
That save was unbelievable! It was so smooth :D great job Nastia
I was almost more impressed by the save than everything else!
Her 2006 beam routine was my favorite of her beam routines. Especially that BEAUTIFUL stag jump, perfection.
That save is what makes this one so special and worth watching over and over again just to see it in awe!!
That save was EVERYTHING!!!!
A save like that should win points.
Heck, she could've just connected the back pike to a Miller! The end result would have resembled Anna Pavlova's major tumbling pass on beam a bit. I know it's technically a mistake, but I love the chutzpah and the creativity! And the flexibility!

Gymnastics is about doing impossible things and being beautiful doing it.
That save was a beautiful feat.
I saw this live and the interesting thing was the handstand that she threw seemed a lot slower in coming than it appeared in the footage above. I was blown away to see her pull it off.
Nastia is an absolute legend, a true virtuoso of the sport who overcame immense adversity to claim the ultimate title.
That save was badass!
She makes zero noise on her Onodi, that's how smooth it was.
Even her save has the most amazing lines and pointed feet!!!
She is one of my favorite gymnast ever and plus that SAVE was amazing
03/10/2020
That's the LEGENDARY SAVE
And still watching
even her save was elegant and beautiful
okay wow i forgot how much of a badass she was . amazing mentality

And she did it all with a busted ankle ❤❤😮
That was the best save ever!!!
What an incredible save, should’ve gotten a perfect score just for that! Nastia is such a fantastic gymnast... 💜 👌🏻
her save never fails to get me like omg unbothered queen

So badass that even when she messes up, she makes it awesome.
The best of the best
Gorgeous

woow incredible!
ohhh amazing save
And off comes the microphone... Evgeny such a good coach and calms her down.
what did he mean by "off comes the microphone"?
Her dad was really upset
Her dad was upset so he took off the mic so it didn't pick up what he was going to say, which, clearly, wasn't very nice. haha!
what a save!
Dat save was like wow.
back to the days when they gave 15s when gymnasts grasped the beam
I wish I could do something like this !
what a save......
So good
cool well done
:ooo love her
vine
Yes, it was a save, however, she saved it with an actual skill she should’ve been credited for that.
I think she saved more then 0.3, I mean, if she had fallen and still had grasp the beam before falling, the would have deducted her for grasping the beam + falling so 0.5 + 0.8 = 1.3 (And nowadays even 1.5 since a fall is 1 full point)
0:26 best save eva !
She's smooth withit
The fact that the fall was beautiful doesn’t make it not a fall
that save tho!!
woovvvv....
i think he says "it's 4 inches wide", but i TOTALLY thought he said "orange is white" the first time, too!
That save shouldve been a new skill
0:24 amazing!!
That should have been points given
Bonus point for epic save?
Her dad is scary
if she had managed to make that handstand really great, would they have credited it?
☮️
In 2006 grabbing the beam didn't count as a fall, now it does.
0:27 *FUC-* I meant that-
I would have not saved my self I would have failed
It still doesn't. It's still a five tenth deduction instead of a full point like a fall.
Amazing save. What Was heron score then?
Her score**
@@levidavanso She got a 15.500 and won the competition even with the mistake. She also won the Olympic All-Around Gold medal in 2008!
This tumbling on the balance beam...
I saw on vine app
Wait why was her dad mad?
I think she bobbled was bc she rushed a little bit
Alestar viendo que esta guapa le aprecio su tarkoititko.
The coaches wear microphones?

Why werent you in the olympics? That was amazing. We need you on team USA :D
She was in the olympics in 2008... she won the all around gold.
***** oh really? :) cool i actually didnt know! :D
Jennifer Sleiman
yeah she tried for London but she had a nasty fall on bars, it was her last chance for the olympics and it was unlikely she would make the team so she had nothing to lose.
***** ooh that sucks..oh well maybe next time :)
+Jennifer Sleiman you probably hear her when you watch gymnastics videos from 2013+. she commentates for NBC and is much better and more positive than Elfie!!
But that save though!! :22-:32
Grabbing the beam is a .5 tenth deduction, not quite a full point.

I still don't get it though. How come athletes still get to the podium after having done serious mistakes and sometimes even falls like that.
It's all about start values, Nastia's start values were high enough that she had a lot of "cushion" for mistakes, hence she was able to falter and still win.

What’s the score? Did she win?
15.550 and she won.

wth
SORRY wrong vid...
made the performance better wtf is that weird posing shit anyways after each move
It counts as a fall...
Why if she clearly didn't fall?
overscored as usual for her.
Wow she's good at gymnastic and I am better then her
Why dont i see you in the olympics then
You cant even spell "gymnastics" correctly, idiot!
+Lisa Vega Your much better in gremmar *then* him.
Denise Grande ikr
Forever overscored.
Are you kidding me?? She should have been awarded for that amazing save!
Way too overscored

lmaoooo right....and that's how Ashe got her Olympic silver on BB...by not being a "beamer"?? she was always a beamer and bar worker. smh
+mrsjojo xoxo not to mention that she was the 2007 World Champion on beam
+Morgan Harrop yes!! she has, from day 1, been a tremendous beam worker. if they search her way back to 2003-2005 you'll see her progression which was never awful...just growing into her gymnastics and gaining experience
+Morgan Harrop yeses!!!!
