- How to convert install.esd to install.wim
1. Open Command Prompt with Admin
2. Change directory to c: root where you should of copied install.esd. to change directory type cd .. and press enter and then again cd .. and press enter.
3. Type: dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:install.esd and press enter
4. Type: dism /export-image /SourceImageFile:install.esd /SourceIndex:1 /DestinationImageFile:install.wim /Compress:max /CheckIntegrity
5. that's it, you should now have install.wim in your c:\

Is there a way to extract/add the drivers to the wim file for *all* the indexes? If you extract only one to add the drivers to, when you create the iso, the user won't have the other options, right?

Nice video, came here as DISM 6.3 in server 2012 can't do the above, had to come home and run it on W10, I'll then copy the new .wim back into my folder and try importing into MDT again.

The system cannot find the file specified.
The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log
first run cmd as admin, directory c:windows\system32. now use cd.. qand cd.. c:\ root directory begin then process ok

Do you have a video explaining how to do this with a Linux OS? I'm trying to install Windows 10 and at the moment I have Ubuntu 20.04 as my main OS. I have downloaded windows on a 64GB USB flash drive and when I tried to install windows it says that install.wim is causing a problem.
+Britec09 The only difference between ESD and WIM files is the file size, or anything else? What are the advantages of ESD compressed ISO files over *Non-ESD compressed* ISO files? Will there be a problem with very old hardware if we use ESD compressed ISO files?
Well ESD is fundamentally different from iso. Iso is a disc image able to be read and written like physical discs by a designated windows service, and while I suppose some ESD files can be converted into a disc image, an iso could not be converted to ESD. ESDs are like unzipped packages and can be placed and read within the iso disc image file as it turns out by the Windows installation files. The ESD in there seems to come uncompressed so perhaps compressing it wouldn't allow it to be scanned by larger applications surrounding it within an iso environment or otherwise.
the converting is easy but I cant seem to replace the esd with the wim inside the iso image file....
I'm trying to do this to the recovery environment booted from a USB because I can't get to my desktop what do I do?

So what if the file is on a usb ? How do i find it in command prompt?
I just need to chance ur path, just write d: on cmd (or the letter which is ur usb) and then go to the source where the install.esd is in typing cd source and then use the command normally

I actually just modify the ISO files directly and burn a new DVD
Hey I have a question what if say like i don't want to do the whole install motherboard drivers and extra and other stuff can you make a custom windows that can add and install all the drivers like i mean if i download motherboards drivers and NVIDIA like i have a asus motherboard can i install it into the windows dir and make it where is that it can install with the windows installion
