The highway fuel economy is not far off from what my 2014 1500 5.7 gets. I measured around 21 MPG last time I took a trip out of town going from Columbus, GA to Atlanta, GA and back. Mostly highway driving between I-185 and I-85 and a bit of city driving mixed in. I got roughly the same going to Macon and back on US-80. I honestly don't really see this as a win with these new engines, especially considering that even though the I6 is more powerful once you start to actually use that power the fuel economy is going to drop like a stone when the boost kicks in. I really want to see how the fuel consumption compares to the Hemi in a 2024 while towing on this same trip. If the results end up being the same or the I6 does worse, then that will pretty much kill any justification in my eyes for going with a new 1500 over an older one at the dealerships besides the overall pricing.
It’s all about the emissions. It’s just another iteration of the late 70’s, early 80’s except you get to keep the power but drop the cylinders. Back then tech only allowed them to drop the power to comply.
It's a about emissions. Dodge has paid millions in fines from the EPA for not meeting emissions standards. Why do you think all the manufacturers are going away from V8s? Smaller engines with turbos have the same or more power, less emissions.

That includes all driving around up and around there down to Carson and some other areas. I can get 15-16 city.
The lane keep check the sensitivity you can adjust in the settings. Also love that Jeep/Ram has both cruise options because sometimes I don’t want to be slowed down. My Nissan only has adaptive and can be too sensitive at times in even in light traffic so hardly use it
I lived in the Kalamazoo area for years, and that Marathon station you were at in the beginning of the video was one of my go to stops in the mornings. I could tell by the shadows that you missed rush hour. Your lucky, because that section of road between there and the highway is the worst during rush hour.
So I noticed on your window sticker your Ram has LED head lamps, that's why they project so well. I'm running a 2023 2500 6.4 with LED's and just love them.
I have had a ‘21 Ram Laramie for 2 years. I am quite happy with it but I have 3 things that would make it better: 1.) a larger fuel tank, I have the standard 21 gallonish tank; 2.) better rear seat ventilation with controls; 3.) heavier springs on the tonneau cover latches to reduce lifting at highway speeds.
Did you option the ventilated rear seats? If not, you might be able to add them in to get cooler seats. If you did, look up adding an inline variable speed booster to increase and control the speed of the built-in fan. For the tonneau, I find the bakflip aluminum covers are very solid and will not move at any speed.
I have a 2020 Laramie with the 3.92 rear axles and the hemi, and my milage isn't that much lower than this - I did New England to North Carolina and averaged 22mpg. I agree that the lane keep assist is close to useless (my sensors had to be replaced once already), but the adaptive cruise is essential for road trips, and it's a feature I loved so much, it's on my list as a must have feature on any future vehicle.

I want them to put the I6 SO Hurricane in the gladiator.

I averaged 21.7 MPG in my 2017 Ram 1500 5.7 Sport, crew cab, short bed with 3.92's and a lot more options doing a 1400 mile round trip. I don't think these new trucks are designed for efficiency as much as they are for towing/hauling experience. That extra torque coming on earlier will definitely help. I also made the same trip in my 2020 2500 6.4 Longhorn and got 19.4 MPG.
Many thanks to TFL Truck for getting a long Tradesman std output Hurricane for testing!! Looking forward to the Ike and the 100 mile highway towing efficiency!! This could be the sweet spot for 1/2 truck for travel trailer towing. Very interested to know if RAM has helped the 1500 cope with tongue weight, WITHOUT mega sag. In the past, coil sprung rear has meant overly tight WD to keep the dolphin-ing away, and that puts a lot of pressure on the TT A-frames. Thanks again!!
Crazy to hear the lane keep assist in that Ram won't correct you. It works as it should in my Durango and corrects me if I'm going over the lines without my signal on.
I bought my ranger in 2020 with a bunch of options, and it stickers for $38k. I paid $36k. I thought that was a lot, but now the same truck would be well into the 40s.
We only have 95 octane and 100 octane here in Denmark. It's extremely expensive. Our 95 octane costs the equivalent of 2.10 USD per liter, and 100 octane is 2.40 USD per liter.
Your fuel is not higher octane, North America just uses a different octane rating standard (RON vs AKI) than what you're referring to: your 95 octane is called 91 in the US, 98 is 93 and 100 is 94
@@drasoio Okay, I wasn't aware of that, I thought it was the same everywhere in the world. Fortunately, you never get too old to learn something new. 🙂

I have had 3.92 axles in my last 3 trucks. With overdrive transmissions it doesn't affect the fuel economy. I am a retired Chrysler product tech. with 45 years in the business. I had customers that had 3.23 axles in their trucks that got worse mileage.

On other vehicles you have to pick in the menu between regular and adaptive cruise control. Having driven a Wagoneer while in the US I miss being able to pick on the wheel depending on traffic conditions.
well I think the ecomomy is great in reality. you got 26.6 mpg (imperial) with a pickup doing average 66 mph. that is very good. I don't doubt the other brands will be close too. it is impressive how well pickups do compared to the 70 and 80s when i started driving. That price is absurd. I just paid $54,000 ($56,000 MSRP) for my 2024 Chevrolet 2500 HD Z71 with the 6.6 gas. And it has rear seat chargers and 110V plug in the front and in the bed. And it has good looking 20” alloys with AT tires, not fugly steel wheels with highway tires. Twice the truck for less. What a joke. No wonder Stellantis is struggling.

It would be nice to see a mileage test with the new ram and the 3.55 gears. This truck in its configuration beats my hemi with 3.92 gears and tow mirrors. I have a 33 gallon tank which allows me to get about what you got for distance. By your numbers if that truck had the 33 gallon tank you could have gone over 700 miles.
It’s an empty\unloaded truck, so the turbos are not needed to hold speed at 65-70mph even during heavy elevation changes. It’s towing where the elevation change really works those turbos and sucks down the gas.
@@Cloud30000 not true. At legal highway speeds here in Texas, in order to maintain the speed limit on hills, I guarantee that motor will be under boost. Not max boost, but it will be under boost.
At 1600ish pounds of payload, it puts it quite a bit lower than the Titan XD. Though, the power and mileage are both substantially better in the Ram. Will be interesting to see how this motor holds up over time, and if it gets hybridized later on.
I love how a work truck model MSRPs for more then a Lariat F150 3.5 Ecoboost did just five years ago. I know Ram still gives incentives, but still ouch. I guess I am not buying a new truck for quite some time.
Interesting to see what the efficiency is for this new engine. My F150 5.0 has a slightly lower tow rating, partially due to the efficient rear diff. But it also gets 21 in my city/hwy driving. And I get 650 miles on my 36 gal tank. Over 700 on road trips. All things considered I think I’d stick with the relative simplicity and reliability of an n/a engine. Plus it was a LOT cheaper.
No way you are getting that unless you are staying right at 55. He's doing 70 plus.
@@DusdaddyI got between 18.5 and 21.9 out of my hemi at 75 mph. 25 mpg using non ethanol gas.
@@Dusdaddy I got 24 mpg from NY to TX in my '17 ram with a Hemi running 5 over a couple years ago. I get between 21 and 22 just going back and forth on my 60 mile loop to work.
Poor Andre seems so tired on the second day of the trip. Get some rest, brother!
I get 20+ mpg in my 3.5 ecoboost and it has a 36 gallon tank. So I can go around 700 miles before filling up. That’s fully loaded, bed full of stuff and 4 adults.
I regularly get about 800mi with mine but do not have the heavy load. Just did a 700mi trip on the weekend and the combined average was 24.9mpg (on gauge) running on the ECO setting and 120mi until empty when i got home. Avg speed on the highway was 70 mph. Did not buy a pick up for the fuel economy but I cannot be happier.

He did. Without getting out of the truck....
Looks like you stopped for fuel in my little part of the world, Newton, Iowa. Love your channel!
6’4 isn’t a large bed it’s standard (or it should be considered standard)
Thanks for all the work you put in for testing!
It’s the ‘long’ bed for a crew cab, which otherwise comes with a bed only large enough for moving houseplants and isn’t much of a truck at all.
It’s considered large now for a half ton 4 door
8' is a standard pickup bed
@@Bajaheat that’s true. I saw the ford trucks don’t make the 8’ with anything other than regular cab after 2023 year which is a bummer

Stellantis and it’s MSRP ideas. A GMC 2500 crew cab standard bed Pro work trim with a 6.6 L V8 gas engine is $54k MSRP. Practically same as this 1500 RAM work truck. Ok.
Less hp and tq and mpg I’ll pass
That's not with the same options. Optioned the same way, that GMC price jumps $10k easily.

I love lower trim pickups. The price's are beyond crazy!!
My 2021 Ram 1500 Big Horn Crew Cab with Hemi and 3.92 axle out the door was $47k new.
We went on a trip from southern California to Lake Tahoe via the desert with the ac on and going and maintaining 75-80mph at times. No towing. Round trip from my front door and back was 26.0 mpg. That includes all driving around up and around there down to Carson and some other areas. I can get 15-16 city.
3.21’s are good for at least 2-3 mpg with the Hemi so would be nice to see results with the Hurricane
That depends on speed; certainly when doing 80mph, but you won’t see that much of a difference between 65-70mph.
I have a 2019 ram 5.7 quad cab with 3:21 gears and a 33 gallon tank I get just about 700 mi doing 65 mphs
@@Soccerthelegend yup, it is awesome when traveling.
You can adjust the strength of the lane assist! In the settings and under the safety/driving assistance tab
So I noticed on your window sticker your Ram has LED head lamps, that's why they project so well. I'm running a 2023 2500 6.4 with LED's and just love them.
Shrinkflation ? A large bed is 8 feet not 6.5
6'4" is large for a crew cab...they are typically about 5.5 feet

That ford is twice the amount of money as the Ram. These prices are ABSOLUTELY INSANE!
YOU IN THE USA ARE VERY LUCKY! WE'RE PAYING 1.61 A LITER IF GAS IN CANADA. 😢
US gallon is also smaller. Only 3.8 liters. Canadian gallons are 4.6 liters. $1.50 in Ontario

Nissan isn't the best at supporting discontinued products... owners of the diesel titan xd can tell you all about that... 20k for a motor and 12-15k for a transmission and prices are only going up.
I used to own a Ram Ecodiesel. Normal highway mileage with a moderately loaded truck was 25mpg. It was great for long haul road trips.
@stevenpeterson7234 your a liar and your truck is a pile of shit. It's not even a real truck
And I'm glad to see that Mopar fuel gauges are as non-linear as always. :D

Had one…went to the AT4 3.0 Duramax. Couldn’t be happier.
I bought my bronco and warranty from Granger, they were awesome to deal with, picked me up at the airport and i was on my way back to colorado within an hour..
Considering that I bought a fully loaded 2019 Laramie w/5.7 for $43k cash in august 2018, this is absolutely insane. So happy I bought my RAM when I did. Just hit my 6-year anniversary with it yesterday.
I pulled a 5,000 LB trailer from N.C. to Alaska through Canada on the ALCAN with my 2023 Wagoneer with the I6 SO Hurricane and it did great. No issues what so ever. The I6 is a great engine from what I can tell, prior to pulling the trailer, I Shipped it from Hawaii to California, then drove it to N.C. to pick up the trailer. I want them to put the I6 SO Hurricane in the gladiator.
Reliability and maintenance should be factors as well.
Not a Ram fan BUT you had me liking it till it came with manual folding mirrors. I don’t need the glitz and glamour. That tradesman is perfect except the mirror folding
Did you look into the vehicle settings? The lane guidance on my 2019 has settings to change how aggressively it functions.
Thats why the 3.55 was perfect. Glad they brought it back after getting rid of it for the 5th gen
6.4 feet is now long bed? On a work truck?
It’s not a work truck
With the limousine sized back seat, yep.
The standard hurricane engine is potent motortrend tested this same tradesman truck and got 0-60 in 4.7sec
We only have 95 octane and 100 octane here in Denmark. It's extremely expensive. Our 95 octane costs the equivalent of 2.10 USD per liter, and 100 octane is 2.40 USD per liter.
That corresponds to approximately 7.90 USD per gallon for 95 octane and 9.60 USD per gallon for 100 octane.
@@drasoioit is slightly higher as no US pump sells higher than 93 outside of racing fuel and typically has 85 to 89 as standard while Europe standard is 91 equivalent and goes up to 94 equivalent, but not dramatically higher. I think it may be related to ethanol use in the US fuel
I have had 3.92 axles in my last 3 trucks. With overdrive transmissions it doesn't affect the fuel economy. I am a retired Chrysler product tech. with 45 years in the business. I had customers that had 3.23 axles in their trucks that got worse mileage.
I just bought a 2025 Big Horn with the new engine and a level 2 equipment group (loaded). MSRP was $62k. Purchased for $47k. 😁

Still driving my 2013 Tradesman. 352,000 miles on 3.6 Pentastar. Towing a 5,500 lb camper in the WV mountains and 3.55 is dropping to 4th on my 8 speed. Does fine as long as you don't have 3 mi upgrades.
I had a truck years ago dis the same . I think it the shape of the tank
On other vehicles you have to pick in the menu between regular and adaptive cruise control. Having driven a Wagoneer while in the US I miss being able to pick on the wheel depending on traffic conditions.
I like that they have options for both style cruise, because i personally would never use adaptive cruise.
Great video Andre!! I love the Iowa 80 truck stop! They have a big trucking show there every 2nd weekend in July. You guys should check it out!
Dang 21mpg. My 2.7l is getting 24.8mpg currently (yeah less power but I’m not towing 89% a the time)
Agreed. That mpg sucks.
On the fuel economy, don’t forget the head winds you get on west bound I-80 through Iowa/Nebraska/ Colorado

I don't doubt the other brands will be close too. it is impressive how well pickups do compared to the 70 and 80s when i started driving. Used to think 15mpg was good and the trucks had no way close to the power
Cool I live 9 mi north of the i-80 truck stop largest truck stop in the United States
That's pretty good mileage, I can only get 360 miles with my 5.7 Hemi on a 100 liter tank.
That price is absurd. I just paid $54,000 ($56,000 MSRP) for my 2024 Chevrolet 2500 HD Z71 with the 6.6 gas. And it has rear seat chargers and 110V plug in the front and in the bed. 53k for a base 1500 tradesman 2024 with 5.7 10 miles
53k for Sierra Denali 6.6 gas 5 miles
Both cash prices out the door for me…

Good review. Gets 4 mpg more than my 4.3 V6 S10 Chevy 2wd.
I wonder how it would look as a single cab I think it would be pretty cool.
18:24 Separate buttons for adaptive cruise control is good actually!!!
I'm pleasantly surprised even the tradesman has adaptive cruise control. I can't go back to basic cruise control.
That mileage was possible because there's no huge elevation changes so the turbos are not spooling up
It’s an empty\unloaded truck, so the turbos are not needed to hold speed at 65-70mph even during heavy elevation changes.
It’s towing where the elevation change really works those turbos and sucks down the gas.
Acceleration does it, too.
No huge elevation change but Iowa is hilly. I usually get much better mpgs in Illinois and Nebraska than I do in Iowa.
Turbos generally improve fuel efficiency. Unless you spoil them up aka getting on the gas. Turbos run off of exhaust gas, a turbo does not use fuel
In sweden we only get the laramie or limited. For around 110k. The Trx is 170k.
Like 15k cheaper.
I don't imagine many companies or whatever will be buying the work trucks with the inline 6. Probably will just do Pentastar.
Mpg changes with warmer temps! I always get about 2-2.5 mpgs more in the summer
For it's price point I do not believe it fits well but as a truck by itself it's neat. like the inside, would pref. a fully painted front end but that's just me. Ty for sharing.
My 2014 Hemi gets 22.2 averaging 70 mph......does it all the time between Phoenix and Wisconsin....
I think it looks great in white.
You can usually get around 10 to 15K off with RAM dealers. So in reality, not too bad for the pricing of this work truck.
I was getting the same MPG on my 2021 1500 Laramie w/5.7 eTorque, 2wd
$57k... ouch! But 21mpg isn't bad. I'm Interested in how long this new engine will last.
