Guatemala and Mexico (and really most countries in the world) do not require IDP for US/EU/Canada (and more) driving licenses. Double-check so you don't waste your money on something you don't need. Also, if you do decide to get it, ask for model 1968 which is valid 3 years instead of 1 year and usually only a few bucks more expensive.

It's not an ID though. The IDP is just a standard official translation of your driver's license. The IDP can never be used alone; you must always have your original driver's license too.
IDP stands for International Driving Permit, it is passport-like document that serves as an official translation of your domestic drivers license. In the majority of cases it is only valid when presented along with your domestic drivers license.
Functionally speaking, the IDP just makes it easier for a traveler to rent/operate a motor vehicle in a foreign country. IDPs are only valid for one year.
IDPs do contain a photograph of the bearer but are generally not considered identity documents for purposes other than driving.
