He had incredible clutch stretches during those three playoffs years.

Way too many LeBron fans in the comments celebrating MJ's defeat here. He sure did bounce back though, didn't he? And he didn't need to flee his franchise three times to form new superteams to do it. Or are people going to say that adding Dennis Rodman is the equivalent of all the all stars and superstars LeBron needed to play with on four different teams in order to win 4 championships in 20 seasons?
Give me a break. MJ took responsibility for the defeat to Orlando (the sports media was different back then in that they didn't pass the blame around like they've done consistently for a certain 4 time champ today; no, if you were the guy, then you got raked over the coals for your team coming up short) and worked hard in the offseason so that when he got a chance to play a full season again, there would be no let down. And as we know, the team gelled like no other before, won 72 games, and went on to threepeat.

At that game I was decked out in Orlando gear and also wore my Shaq shoes. Don’t remember much about the game itself. Growing up in NW Indiana, I always for some reason rooted for whoever the Bulls played, probably cuz I got so tired of year after year watching MJ win every season. If you look past the stats, the way Jordan played in 92-93 before his retirement was actually similar to how he played post retirement. He no longer jumped out of the gym except on a few instances. He beat teams more with jumpshots (the 54 points vs. Knicks in the 93 ECF was entirely jumpshots) Jordan just had to get back into basketball shape in 95 which didn't take him long.

I was a huge NBA fan back during the 90s. I remember when MJ retired on October 6, 1993 and how much of a shock it was back then. After winning his 3rd straight title, I was sure they were going to be competitive again. But his retirement left a void in NBA basketball.
I remember watching the Bulls for the first time without MJ on Christmas Day of 1993. It was the Bulls against the Magic. Their team had Pete Myers as his replacement. Penny Hardaway showed right off the bat he was the real deal.
That feeling of void persisted until March of 1995. It was so nice to see him back. New number (#45). Then later new shoes (Jordan 11 Concord). Then another pair of shoes to comply uniform shoes (Penny's Nike Air Flight One). And losing in the second round to the Magic.

Horace Grant has no respect today. Even coming from Chicago's fans!
In his Bulls' career, Grant was a great role player and some of his performances saved the Bulls during those playoffs stretches.
Jordan stated himself they were one [Horace Grant] away from winning in 1995... which eventually led to Rodman's arrival in the Windy City.
GMs today should look at how the Bulls worked and applied its basics right now. Throwing a bunch of superstars rarely works, especially when they are assembled via free agency.

It doesn't get overlooked by Jordan fans either, it's just viewed at be as big a blemish as much as LeBron fans demand we do because the following year the Bulls swept this same Magic team with Dennis Rodman being the only real key acquisition.

Rodman was kinda a big acquisition. Like, HUGE. As the video points out Horace Grant was the difference between the Magic and Bulls. This 95 Bulls team didnt have either Grant or Rodman on the roster and it really showed. Kukoc coming off the bench was so much better. Pippen and Rodman at the 3 and 4 was insanely good. I'm just glad the Micheal Jordan remained consistent regardless of who said what, as I can only imagine what it felt like to choose to be in the midst of so much drama and still execute in ways that he ended up doing. To constantly be around so much negative energy, talk and hearsay and still be able to gracefully execute is a blessing. Imagine dominating a pro sport so significantly that you actually get bored with it and decide to try something else. That's what happened with Jordan. He won 3 championships in a row and wasn't chasing anybody as far as any particular NBA player because he already was considered by most to be the best basketball player who ever lived even at that point. I don't think he would have taken that time off though had his father not died. I believe that hit him much harder than anybody knew.

Before the series started, the Bulls were -185 and the Magic were +165. I don't know who was the favorite going into the playoffs, but the Bulls were +500.

I think a lot of people overlook that neither Grant nor Rodman were on this 95 team and the Bulls didnt really have a tough, rebounding PF which they desperately needed. People say Jordan not being back to his best was the reason the 95 Bulls lost to the Magic but looking at the states Joran averaged 31 pts on decent efficiency.
Horace Grant really was the difference between the teams. Penny, Shaq and Jordon, Pippen cancelled out each other leaving Grant as the difference.
A large part of the decline of the Bulls from the 93-94 season, that didn't have Jordan at all, and won 55 games and took the Knicks to game 7 and the 47 win team that included Jordan was the departure of Grant with no real replacement.

In the Bulls quest for a 4 peat, if MJ had not retired for Baseball prior to the start of the 93/94 season, I think MJ's Bulls vs Hakeem's Rockets would've been the best ever NBA finals, would MJ win his 4th straight NBA title who knows but in theory if the 94 finals was Bulls vs Rockets with MJ I think for sure it will go the distance to game 7.
In contrast, that 93/94 Rockets team with Hakeem all season long were truly an elite team with Hakeem winning MVP honors.

What I learned about the Bulls dynasty of the 90s is that winning doesn't cure everything. Banners may "last" forever but the resentment amongst some of the players is disappointing to witness especially after the release of The Last Dance.
MJ still holding grudges against some people (whether imagined or not). Pippen perceptibly not receiving the respect he deserves and rightfully so. Grant, Perdue, and some of the supporting cast being "whipping boys" to MJ's "leadership." I never watched The Last Dance in its entirety and I probably never will. MJ thought he was helping himself with this docuseries but to me it put a blemish on that legacy/dynasty.

Could they have won 8 straight, if he'd never retired? Maybe. Maybe not. In fairness that Rockets Team was real solid n it would've been hard to stop The Dream.

Not a popular opinion here but, Jordan's 6 titles and legacy is in part due to his 1-1/2 season break from the game.
That allowed him to recharge mentally and also give Phil Jackson and Pippen a much needed break from him as well. I know many like to say "he would've won 10 titles" if he didn't retire in 93 and kept playing beyond 98, but Phil Jackson and Steve Kerr said themselves that wouldn't have been the case. Both have said (Phil Jackson in books and on Kerr on NBA Roundtable) that a 3-peat is the most emotionally draining thing you can possibly go through.

There is a misconception that MJ did not play well in 1995 and that's why the Bulls were eliminated. That is simply not true, MJ played very well and I would argue that he was better in 1995 than the next season. The 1995 MJ had everything, his team did not. It was not MJ that was worse, the Bulls were worse as a team, Horace Grant had left and he left a huge gap in the Bulls' frontline that was filled by Dennis Rodman in the 1995-1996 season. In fact had Jordan not made this ridiculous turnover in the end of the first game against Orlando it is very likely that the Bulls could be at the finals that year.

The media tries to blame Jordan's "rust" as to why the Magic beat Chicago. THE TRUTH IS SIMPLE: Orlando's big guys were MUCH BETTER than Chicago's big guys.
Jordan and Pippen actually had nice stats especially when you consider that Penny, Nick, Bowie, and Shaw were tall, athletic defenders.

    Grant 108
