Questions ready, now I need a girlfriend.
You don't really need a girlfriend. Count your blessings. All the anniversaries you don't have to remember, all the holidays you can blow off, all the gifts you don't have to buy, and the quarter million you don't have to spend on having that unexpected child.
@@carultch I used to think like that. One day I saw my ex at the park with her 3 kids, that's when I realized no matter how much money I make, without a family, I am the one who is poor.
Are you sure about that? Bet she would beg to differ.
@@carultch I agree to a certain extent. I love being a parent though. I love my son.
@@famicomnintendo you'll still end up with no family and still have to pay as though you did. I.e. divorce -> alimony + child support.
This channel is secretly nudging me to think about getting married. Lol... Did my parents speak to you guys or something???
Haha! Maybe. Or maybe it's February 13th and something's in the air...
@@TwoCentsPBS haha I'm sure if I find a nice girl, I can share a delightful conversation about our finances on Valentine's Day 😂
The divorce rate is 50%. It's like playing Russian roulette with a loaded gun and a coin toss. Heads you win, tails you lose. Buts it's a 50% chance to lose, every day, every year.
@@Shane101A thanks for the motivation 😂
@@shanhussain6114 bro he is right... unless you live in a country were a woman can't divorce you and take your stuff and kids then DON'T do it.
1. What do you EARN, OWN, and OWE
2. How was money dealt with in your household growing up
3. What will be yours, mine and ours
4. How much do you want to spend on kids
5. What are your financial goals in order of priority
Yancy Capri thank you!!
Thanks
Mvp
I like financial goals. This is good.
Number 6. Are you willing to sign a Prenuptial Agreement?
I and my partner were at a crossroads regarding our finances. We both agreed to talk about it and sought a solution. I’m glad we found a way out although it's with professional help, but that marked the turning point in my finances.
Well, we've gotten into a plethora of assets with $73k spread across stocks (options and futures) for the short term and Roth IRA, index funds, and ETFs, for the long term. We've been investing with the help of a pro fund manager, Herman W Jonas who oversees our investments. Now we sit back and reap the dividends as we just reinvest at intervals.
Do not forget, when it comes to stocks that prices can be erratic, rising and declining quickly, often in relation to companies' policies, which individual investors do not influence.
Working with a fiduciary like Sir Herman has given me peace of mind in my stock investments. They prioritize my financial interests and have guided me towards stocks with strong fundamentals, resulting in consistent growth over the years.
Actual useful information, love your videos guys.
Thanks so much, glad it's helpful!
My girlfriend doesn't understand the difference between needs and wants there's no way I'll share an account with her. Love her to death tho
You love her death?
@@spghost4135 oh
Might be a good topic for y'all to communicate. A shared vision of "needs vs wants" is critical for any long-term relationship!
Next time that she wants something make her hold her breath and ask her if she needs the shoes or wants the air?
My girlfriend is a dreamer too but my parents keep telling me that it's nothing that should stress me out because reality will hit her soon. For instance, she likes to send me photos of beautiful homes and vacation places that she finds online and asks what I think about these photos. 😒
You guys deserve your own tv show on finance! Your approach is refreshing and will spark interest in finance in people who don’t like the subject.. keep up the good work guys.

See a relationship counsellor or maybe a religious leader (ie: pastor)
They can do wonders for relationships!
Debt killed it for me. My ex fiance snowballed his debt in the wrong direction. He went from $8k to $15k then $27k in 1 year and 6 months and had nothing to show for it.
I find it fascinating how many people in committed relationships don’t know how much their partner makes. SUCH an important piece of your relationship. -Akeiva
I ask my husband how much he makes about twice a year, and somehow always forget. But we've been married for 12 years and by now he's used to it :D
That makes sense, but when I think of it I don't know exactly how much money anyone other than myself is making, and I only know approximately for myself
Why would I want my gf to know how much I make? I earn 6 times what she makes and I don’t want gold diggers. I don’t know if my gf is gold digger but I don’t wan her to know such sensitive and personal information

Such a fun video! I loved how you guys could give your own personal experience with every tip, helping with the ideas you were sharing! I think we should always be thinking about the future ( even the distant future for me ) and how we can do better and these videos really help! Thanks for sharing!
We didn't really think about this stuff until years AFTER we got married, Ruby. And that caused lots of strife and tension for us. Glad you're thinking of these things beforehand... hopefully you can avoid some of the mistakes we did by avoiding the topic of money!
Nobody talks about money because most people are in debt. But everybody looks the part. Look at the percentage of people delinquent in housing and student loans. Then look at the percentage who have less than 20,000 in a bank account or nothing. Both are really high numbers.
Planning your wedding is a major reason why you have financial troubles.
Why to be in dept for stupid wedding planning? It should be simple and the money saved can be spend on honeymoon trip!
Or have a small wedding and use your money for something like a honeymoon I’m thinking $22,000+ my god! Just give me a zoom wedding lol

Yes, this is one of the best channels I have seen in RUclips.
I'll be called a gold digger for being too curious about my patner's finances...
If you are looking for a relationship as a solution to your financial problems, you are a gold digger.
Few people in today's society believe in prenups like me. Love you, but if this goes south, your debt is your debt, whatever on your name belongs to you. Wish you the best. It will make the divorce process so much easy and friendly.
When financial problems knock on the front door , love will usually jump out the back window.
Having children in this economy is straight up insane
Yep,i agree with you 1000 percent
I disagree. Even in the hardest times of the last 20 years, quality of life has been significantly better and making ends meet significantly easier than the preceding 1000 years. It hasn't stopped people beforehand. If you carry on with that fearful train of thought you won't ever have kids because things are never perfect. Kids are never perfect.
i agree 100 percent
I disagree, this means you are not managing ur finance right or ur priorities are not aligned. Childrens are best gift u can have..
Not if you save up for it. Also, if you have a highly skilled job, you can move to Canada where college is actually affordable for your kids and the quality of the education is just as good. I will finish school in a year with less than $8k in student loans thanks to my Canadian passport ♥️
Great topic. I hate to bring up the P word.... prenuptial. The future partner needs to fully disclose debt in case things go south there are surprises.
Joke is on you, my wife didn't even have a bank account when we married. Discussing credit score, earnings, and financial merger was out of question. Easy peasy!
Great advices, when I was younger I didn't know better. As I get older and I realized that someone's financial habits is very crucial before marrying him or her. It will either ruin or prospect your finance for life.
Me and my wife, we both have jobs and earn enough to support both of us if one quits his/her job (we just married). So I use my pay for the expenses and my wife's pay is saved in investment and fixed deposit.
Bad Idea... split everything 50/50
@@alejandrodelacruz81 May I ask why you suggest that?
@@frankieduan5311 First, he is just married. Im not a pessimist but things can go south real quick. I think both should put money on expenses and savings/investments.
I don't want to be negative. But, if you both ever got divorced, how will her investments be shared with you. I believe 50/50 as well, life is just too unpredictable.
No girlfriend no financial problems!

@@Kimbrough87 you dont need a girlfriend to get booty. C'mon bro, ever heard of hookup culture?
This video is so American it's funny.
"Right now, sending your child through a 4-year college costs 100K. ask yur partner about their *credit score*!"
You’re right ! In France, college doesn’t cost that much (less than 1,000 € for 5 years unless you want to send your kid to a private business/Engineering school)
I mean they are american...
Oh so do your professors work for free? Are the colleges built and maintain at no cost? Are the book and material donated for free? Or do you mean everyone pays large taxes regardless of if they go to school and the government pays for it making it not free?
@@lukerider479 Well in most European countries taxes are higher than in the US, BUT first of all: You'll start paying taxes as soon as you get your first paid position which happens AFTER the graduation. So you can start your career debt-free without the crippling anxiety of not being able to pay back a shit ton of money. Second: like this, people from poorer families can afford good education as well.
@@TheMirrrl so many people from other countries believe this about the US probably because our media makes it their mission to make it seem this way. College here cost money you pay it back and then you are done even if it takes a long time you are eventually done. In Europe you have crippling taxes for life to pay for your school. Second school here can be done much cheaper than many choose to ie community college or in state schools. Third we have a robust safety net that help the poor with many things including school.. difference is here I can make those decisions on what school I go to, how much I am willing to pay or if I need to go to college at all. In Europe you have no choice if you stop after high school they still require you to help pay for those that will go on to out earn you. Difference is choice

My husband and I had this list of 111 questions we agreed to ask each other while we were dating. We got them from a man who taught an awesome marriage relations class. We would only do one to three questions a day and spent a lot of time going into detail.

Keep in mind people: your partner having a big debt isn’t a big deal. If your partner seems unwilling to pay it off or get out of debt, THAT is a big issue.
If you have no debt, you’re less likely to even have money arguments.
Hiding debt or not knowing about the debt is an even larger (and somewhat common) problem.
Facts
Agreed. When my wife and I started dating I shared this info in a positive and respectful way that I was making minimum wage. 5 years later still married I've grown but she still makes more than me. I make it up by doing most of the chores in the house. Checks and balances.

Thanks for sharing this, especially the personal splurge money. If you don't mind me asking (and of course you can just ignore it) - why do you have equal amounts of money for personal budget rather than a percentage reflective of your income? (Assuming you don't have the same income - I have no idea). What are some pros and cons between splitting the splurge money equally versus based on income?
Love this question, Rachel!
We've always taught that the paycheck you bring home is not reflective of your value in the relationship. For example, would a stay-at-home parent be less valuable or deserve less splurge money than the working spouse? Keeping the personal money equal underscores the fact that this is a mutual, democratic partnership... not a dictatorship
We've seen over and over that splitting personal-money based on income inevitably leads to resentment and a "parent/child" dynamic for the couple around finances which can quickly get toxic.
Just our two cents, and thanks for the fantastic question!
@@TwoCentsPBS Wow, I never thought of it like that. While I have your attention -- can you do an episode on planning and budgeting vacations? Thanks!! :D
@@rachell1794 my wife and I do the same thing. To us, when we got married everything became "ours". As such, we have equal spending amounts because we don't pay attention to who made what. The fact is that WE made $____ last month, and it's up to both of us to put that where we want it. Granted, some other budget items are used more heavily by one of us - she likes trying new things cooking, and I enjoy doing all the work on our old cars. But we still have a certain amount that is just for us individually, and it doesn't matter to us if our earning was unequal. :)
My wife and I did the same thing and it works wonder.. though I admit I control almost everything.. mostly cause my wife SUCKS at math and she said she married me cause I am chinese that is good with math LOL!!!!! Jokes aside, I am glad I have a strong and wonderful wife that is frugal (sometimes CHEAPER than me) when it comes to spending and works hard to get all my dreams to come true.... than again she might be a KGB that is spying on me hmmm.....

Do you both have good paying jobs?
Hmm. That's very unusual Norma. Yep, definitely the most common cause of fights, stress, and divorce in a relationship! Out of curiosity, do you both work or does one of you have a high-paying job? - P
@Matt P I don't have a job, I'm a housewife while my husband's job...I guess it pays well, he works for 5 days a week for 8 hours everyday and gets a bit over 1700 euros a month.
@@norma8686 I am hoping that I did not start something out of nothing but are you both involved in money making decisions for the family? If only one of you manages the money, and the other does not get involved, then explains the lack of money argument. And it's not good.
We need a cost for divorce...
You know because things go both ways😐
Actually in divorce things go in a mono way usually (the woman gets everything and the man attempt suicide a couple of times and if he's lucky he'll live depressed for the rest of his life)
It's an episode we've thought about tackling a few times on this channel. Besides lawyer fees and court filings, what sort of costs are you thinking of? The potential costs of custody battles, losing half of "your" money in the split? Something else?

This questions can actually be awkward while still dating, maybe when marriage is already on the plan.
Still awkward after 13 years together. Mine won't discuss any of this. The car is coming off the road the end of October and I consider myself lucky if food lasts till I get paid again
Just like everything else in America, you need to have money to be in a relationship.
I love the idea of a “money constitution” for couples. The notion of couples talking about their financial goals is very clever and definitely sounds worthwhile.
12k for in vitro and 40k for adoption.
Why does it cost 3 times as much to take care of the kids we already have than it does to artificially make more kids? Adoption should be near free, as it only punishes the kid who otherwise would have a loving family. Likewise, in vitro should be discouraged as it only worsens the overpopulation problem.
jcrowley1985 Say you adopt a kid from another country. There’s private investigators to make sure the child is legally able to be adopted and not kidnapped from a family. There’s the adoption agency workers you have to pay for in your country and the agents who work in the country you’re trying to adopt from. Then there’s the matter of physically getting the child to you or vice versa so you’re paying for transportation. Then there’s either fees for the foster family or the orphanage that need to be paid off.
There’s a lot that goes into this.
1. Overpopulation is not a problem in every country. Many countries encourage their people to have kids to solidify the future workforce.
2. Everybody has the right to have a kid. Being born in a certain year/ region / country / should not restrict your natural born right to reproduce. It's a problem when people have children they can't afford or have time to take care of.
Public adoption through your state via foster to adopt, can cost near zero out of pocket.
"... and then, a few days later, come together in a NON-judgemental frame of mind to discuss the human story behind those numbers..." Hahahaha I love it.
...what's so funny 😠

After watching other videos from your channel, Today I had a discussion with my girl friend about her monthly expenses and debt. Then we made a list of it and made the next 6 month financial plan before. Now I watched this video and I realized that we need to cover some more topics.
I am from India. Here arranged marriages happens a lot, where the boy's income and financial status is compared with the gold, money, car or property(or all of these) girl's parents are willing to give. it's called dowry and it is illegal but every parents gives it because they believe it will bring love and respect for their daughter in Husband's home. Also they will expect 'dowry' from their daughter-in-law too.
So those unlucky couples don't get a chance or they don't even think about discussing this topic. But they will end up in divorce because of the financial issues. I hope every Indian bachelors and newly wed couples should watch this video.
Yes, yes, yes!
I wish I'd seen this video when I was younger - I have never had a conversation like this before getting serious with someone and, at least one relationship ended because I couldn't handle our differences. I also know now that I have brought bad habits from my childhood with me without realising this until I got in to my fifties.
This video has such good advice.
Me and my wife have our joint and separate predetermined money, and any purchases for the house or big items like a car, are discussed before buying them, so that we both are happy about the purchase. At first these discussions were tough, but now they are just normal conversations, even when we disagree. For instance we have made the decision to start going for a sit down meal every month, so we can spend time together away from home.
I am going to send this video to my girlfriend to open up the conversation further. She and I are both pretty open about money but this video will be a great tool to make our future financial plans.
Goodluck
Thanks, PBS Digital Studios, for putting that old earworm back into my head again...

3.
What will be YOURS, MINES and OURS?
4.
How much do you want to spend on kids?
5.
What are your financial goals in order of priority?
Second question is so NO NO for some people..
Money problems is the biggest cause of divorce. I don’t agree with couples having separate accounts. If you’re joined as one in matrimony then join your finances too. A couple needs that transparency and accountability to each other. Couples together need to make a budget EVERY month. EVERY dollar needs to be allocated to something. My wife and I talk about what is important to each of us and we decide together how to achieve these goals. Get organized. Write it down. We keep a notebook with our budget to remind us what was talked about.
Together my wife and I were able to pay off $190k in debt in 4 years. This wasn’t something that just accidentally happened. We did pretty much what this video talks about and decided on our goals together.
I told my husband about my student loan debt on the 2nd date. 😂
Lol love it
1st piece of advice. Dont have a lavish wedding. Specially by taking a debt. That money could be well spent in life if planned properly.
I like dubstep! No wonder I can't find love....
... The women i dated only wants my $... I'm better off single and focusing on my future. :(
I have a better solution: don't get married
Wrong channel bro.
That's a stupid thing to say.
I firmly believe it is not the parents responsibility to pay for the kids college. My parents didn't pay for mine and i did just fine. They taught me how to make and handle money and the rest was up to me. They started me off with a 5,000$ in my savings account since i was a newborn and it never increased. I'm perfectly successful and have a kid of my own who'm i'll expect to pay for her own college.
Right before valentines day! 😂
*I'm single and not sure why I watched all of this lol. I made a video on a personal financial flowchart for young adults for those interested!*
I would just ask situational questions about my partner's finances habit and attitude. If the attitude is toward using debt as leverage or solution, and does not change after knowing the effect of debt, then I will look for someone else.
I have a financially dysfunctional family that treats money topic as taboo. It ends with me and that "it" applies to dysfunction or the family.
Man,
I wish they made adoption more accessible and less expensive so more kids could have families 😔
I'm actually shocked by that!
You guys are so cute together
Awww thanks!
Seriously great video. Its important to know if your partner spends money on lottery tickets as a retirement strategy or not, lol. Financial education is gold....
WARNING! Don't have a joint account -- keep your money in your own account. If you end up in a marriage or a relationship where there's domestic violence, the abuser uses money to control the other person.
No one said anything about putting all your money into a joint account but ok.....
This channel has a lot of great advice, but the unspoken bit at the order of things at 5:05 is probably not the best plan for anyone. Pay off student debt should be number 1 hands down. The other three are definitely up for more personal decision, but implying that putting off STUDENT debt is an okay decision is generally bad, as those loans are often high interest rate.
Great advice, my wife and I have a shared online list of big things we want to spend on, grouping them to timeframes for priority and we openly discuss this list every month to reorder or add/remove
I ask about finances long before my emotions get involved; before officially dating.
When's the baby coming? Julia doesn't look pregnant anymore.

I teach financial planning classes, and I always advise couples to NEVER combine finances totally. I recommend couples use the 3 account system with a his, hers, and ours account. The joint account is funded equally by both spouses and is to be used only for joint expenditures (rent, utilities, food, etc. ) There are NO joint debts with the possible exception of a mortgage. The his and hers accounts are to be saved or spent as each sees fit. The 3 account system helps discourage gold diggers or deadbeat parasite spouses. It also helps prevent arguments over money.
Remember, you marry a person, NOT a bank account.
This three-accounts system wouldn't solve anything in my country if your marriage is based on a *community-of-property* regime.
The gold digging spouse would still suck you dry and take off with half your wealth after having you pay all their debts
Honestly dont get legally married.
You may love each other today.
But tommorow is another story
C'mon, Dubstep is amazing!
Money Carta!! hahaha you are the best!
I would not recommend writing information in email that you wouldn't share in a crowded space.
Dating apps and websites should have a mandatory section for FICO scores in dating profiles
Wow... what a world that would be...
@@TwoCentsPBS Some sites request participants salary range. I think a more reliable question would be verifying you are a safe financial bet. This is important for when the couple wants to buy a house together. Safe and stable credit history displays this person has their priorities straight and mature adult prepared for serious long term relationship or marriage. Someone with a low FICO score you should be suspicious of their intentions.
@@MichaelCMeyer That is even a more retarded idea than dating apps themselves.
@@ELCLAVE300 Security vs Convenience. Dating apps already have users provide their salaries. Dating websites that target long term relationships are marriage have investment in promoting best pairing of couples.
@@ELCLAVE300 Please be politically correct. On behalf of my disabled community I take offense of your use of that legacy word.
credit what? I don't speak american
Wtf are u guys talking about my wife and i know everything about each other finances even chose where to invest together the only money i hide from her are the money for the gifts lol
I think most money arguments stem from different priorities or acts of selfishness. The hardest part of finances for my family is not having much money left for fun/savings. Thankfully we both have similar interests that aren't too expensive.
Please don't put financial information in your email.
Why not? seems totally fine to me.

use an end-to-end encrypted email service and you should be fine.
@@donlautner Right, because more than a tiny fraction of people out there even know what that means much less how to do it. We live in a world where people put important passwords on post-it notes in open floor plan offices.
@@nunyabusiness896 hey, I didn't say that it was widely known and used , but it would be a good solution to the problem nonetheless.
@@donlautner I think they could just hand each other a sheet of paper, that would probably be easiest/most secure.
How this video came up in the Recommended. Very Insightful. Thank you Two Cents.
