To me, the start was dark, which reflected a world where there was little to no hope. Someone is whispering "Imagine". Slowly others take up the idea of imagining another future. The song takes on brighter notes, as a flame taking hold and spreading the brightness. I am old enough to remember the original being introduced to the world. I have seen the world grow darker. I like Geoff's version. It shows the spark being lit and the light growing to bring hope to the world...through imagining a better world.
And since the song never really gets to ‘happy’ (just hopeful) I feel that heaviness and minor key was needed for the contrasting part. When Geoff gets to the “whoa” I almost feel as if I’m soaring on it.
If I may steal an adjective from another reactor, Geoff starts off with a "whistful" melancholy. You've watched enough by him to know he can take any song and bring out emotion from it you didn't realize exists in it.
I love you guys. Thank you Butcher for actually listening and giving it a chance. You rock. I think the beginning was very heavy, not dirge like, and he transitioned into something lighter, more hopeful. So glad you guys know that a cover shouldn't be exactly like the original and appreciate the changes. 😁
I 'm older than you guys and remember the original coming out, and found it very moving. This is just as moving, in a different way. Some have said they would have preferred it to be all like the first part, some prefer the second part.. We're all different. My only criticism was I didn't care for a couple of chords on the piano. But the singing was fine for me. As someone said he "Geoffed it". But that's what he does.
Ah, listening to Geoff is like sinking into a perfectly hot bath! It took a bit to grow on me, but I really like this one. I like also how he went bass, but not basement in his range. And once I got used to the harmonies, I liked them too. Really, the only thing I KINDA didn't like, and it's a minor thing, is when the harmonies come up and Geoff is singing along, you see his lips forming the words, but there's no stand out voice, like there usually is. I mean, usually you can tell which part "Main Geoff" is singing above the harmonies, here you can't. But I love all the voices I'm hearing, so it's not a huge deal. And it's fine on the audio version, it's just the visual in the video which bothers me, just a smidge! 💙💙
I found the beginning to be a bit sad because we had missed the mark. Our dreams of making the world a peaceful loving place hadn't materialized as well as we thought/hoped it would. BUT, the children now have a chance to further that dream and maybe realize it. Thank you for the reaction, gentlemen. You did well. Butcher, I am so glad you gave this arrangement a chance. ❤
I wouldn’t say that it was dirge like. It was more like he did the song in two parts. The first part being from the older generation looking back with something like regret. Almost like saying that they had the chance to do all these things and they didn’t take it. A cautionary tale of a sort. Then part two where the harmonies came in was the next generation seizing upon the idea with hope and energy. And the final few lines was almost like the narrator coming back in to wrap things up. The more I listen to it, the more it reminds me of a grandparent telling a story to a child. The story is somber. Sad, even. But then the kid gets the underlying message and jumps in with their own eureka moment and runs with it. If you could describe a formative memory through music, this would be it.
I'm with Butcher and Jerzey on this one. I loved this in Geoff's voice, but I also feel like we lost him for a minute there. The harmonies came in too strong for me. Still, I've adjusted enough to really enjoy it and the way he starts off just grabs me every time. Awesome reaction! I especially enjoy watching y'all harass each other. Feels like home to me. 😂😂 ❤❤
So total honesty. I had not listened to the whole thing until now. Because first time I opened it, I didn't get past the dirge part of the song. Like Orge, I was .... I don't need a downer song right now. But because of ya'll doing it.. I make a point to watch your video to the end. Do I like it? It will grow on me. I don't dislike it. Thanks gents

It's still allGeoff singing it. The highs & low parts.
Oh yes, it is. We have heard his range before.
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast I love you guys. You're so much fun to watch. Thanks for all your reactions to Geoff & Voice Play.

Wonderful analysis. May the children continue what we began.
OMG Butcher stop I can't stop laughing 😂😂😂😂😂😂
To me, I thought it was stunning with a message that's as real today as yesterday.
It's darker than the original. The world is darker too. But It's Geoff Castellucci so there is always a bit of hope also 😊Thanks for the react guys !
Have you gotten Geoffs' CD, Dusty Old Songs?
Nice reaction.
Thank you 😁
Geoff went the opposite way. Up instead of down.

You should come to the Sunday night stream then! 8pm EST, we have a blast!

Ogre needs to wait and trust Geoff....
High and Dry is the only song he's done without harmony and definitely does his range.
I think his version was durgie. The middle harmonies and tempo changes, to me, threw the song off.
Is it just me or does Geoff sound a bit nasally here?
Love you guys but didn’t like this one sorry
