No, with my history of shopping and sewing, I don’t realistically see myself as ever getting to minimalist except as a travel wardrobe. I checked into this video because I absolutely LOVE you and your style!

I took your advice and sorted my wardrobe out. It was quite a revelation. I found I love 3 neutral colours , relaxed fit natural fabrics. The few colourful or printed things I love all mixed in too. I can dress many things up or down easily and spent yesterday creating outfits that I feel really good in. I gave myself a few tests. With this wardrobe can I cover every possible occasion and feel good this summer?...yes was the answer! Brilliant. Thanks .

My main thought is: if you have a minimalist wardrobe you should know in your head what is in your closet! if you don't: you have too much, LOL!
Second thought is: it takes time to declutter and pinpoint your style, color palette, etc.. well it did for me as I struggled badly with my fantasy self, what I was taught I should wear, what I love to wear deep down and my real life...all together I think it was more than 2 years....
I organize like you by color in my closet but I put the clothes I wear for the current season on a rack, I actually update it every month so it is really appropriate for the current weather/activities, etc...
For the "gaps" I try to use something I have and did not think of using in a different way (like using a sweater instead of buying a cardigan in the same colour) I make a note of a recurring "gap" which continually prevents me of putting together a look, then I go shopping (it also took a long time to become so disciplined!!!)

I recently emptied - and I mean EMPTIED - my wardrobe; dumped it all on the bed in my spare room! Each day/evening when I'm planning my outfit for the next day I have to go to the pile and find the thing I want to wear, put the outfit together, love it, wash it and put it back in the wardrobe. So far (2 weeks in) the pile hasn't diminished much LOL. Back in the wardrobe are 3 'suits' (black pants and blazer, white wide leg jeans and blazer, B&W check with yellow accent pants and blazer), black skinny jeans, black leather jacket, white button down shirt, denim jacket, animal print blouse, check flannel shirt, SUK overalls, a couple of basic tees, my band tees and shoes.
Have confirmed the things I love and wear regularly are: wide leg pants; blazers; sneakers/Converse; boots; basic tops; items in black, white, leopard, with the occasional bright blue, purple or teal (in shoes or accessories usually); things that don't need ironing; fabrics that drape/don't cling; embellishments involving leather, zips, studs or other metallic detail; hoop earrings; natural fabrics; classic, neutral colours; classic silhouettes; a red lip; POCKETS.
The things I thought I loved/should wear but that I'm no longer comfortable in: dresses with one custom-made exception that I grab for events (black, tailored to fit, functional pockets, works with all my shoes); ponte/stretch fabrics (cling factor); synthetics; cardigans; pink; autumnal colours; prints other than stripes or check/tartan/plaid; bright nails; heels that aren't chunky/sturdy (no sky-high stilettos for me!); tunics and other 'fat girl' coverups!
Am taking the time to really critically think about and curate what goes back into my wardrobe. Having fewer items has made me realise 1) no one really cares or notices if I wear the same thing / combo of things each day; 2) basic is better, at least for me; 3) you can add a lot of personality to an outfit through simple accessories (for me it's a red lip, sneakers, earrings) and style tweaks; 4) I work well with a 'youniform' that suits my style; 5) the less I have to think about what to wear the more comfortable I am with what I wear!

A great refresher - thank you! The first question (Do I love this?) is so critical. It is possible (and we deserve) to have a wardrobe made up of items that bring that positive energy into our everyday lives. One of the issues for me is that when I see something on a hanger in my closet, I don’t always remember that once I have it on, I love it. So an important part of refining my closet is to put things on, see/feel that positive energy and register it in my brain. Once we’ve applied this selection criteria mercilessly to our entire closet, there would be absolute confidence that anything we choose will make us feel great.

Hi Emily, I really enjoyed your video this week and agree on these points you made.
Two things in particular have been helpful for me - I have certain colours that I gravitate towards, quite a few neutrals and some mid-tone cool colours and keeping these in mind helps when buying something new, as I find they always work well with what I already have, so as you said you can take any top of bottom and it will work together.
Secondly I recently got a small rail so that I can bring a few things out of my wardrobe and work with them for a while, then change it up when I want.
This really helps me to focus on a few items at a time, instead of being bombarded with lots of clothes all hanging up in front of me and feeling overwhelmed.
This way I can keep a good variety of things in my wardrobe for choice, but then I can concentrate on just a few for a selected period of time.

I consider my wardrobe to be curated as opposed to a minimalist. After several years of weeding out pieces from my wardrobe, I finally got serious. I keep my wardrobe like yours, sections for dresses, blouses, etc. Then by color, light to dark. I pulled out each entire section. I then ONLY put back the pieces that I wear and love. The rest was evaluated into, I do wear this (hung back up), I never wear it and the dreaded "maybe". Never was bagged for donation and I now pack the maybe's away. I usually do this at the end of each season and take a fresh look at it the next year. You'll know immediately next year whether you'll wear it again. I now have a wardrobe I actually wear.

If you ever need a video idea I would love to see one that is about how to ‘transition’ a wardrobe when one has had a significant style shift or change. For example, something in me has just ‘changed’ and I am looking and feeling older. Not in a bad way just all of the sudden many items just ‘feel’ and look ‘too young’ ( not because society says but just because I feel like it doesn’t represent my current, best self). I’m also not sure if or how much I am influenced by trends that I didn’t realize?? For example, all of the sudden I just can’t stand wearing almost any patterns and a huge part of my past style was boho…excess pattern and accessories. Now I wear the same earrings every day and never change them and they are tiny gold ones and one simple necklace. Any help, advice about how to discern how much is influence and how much is ‘real’ life change? And then how to transition/ change styles most easily, smoothly and how to replace and make the change. It’s only this ‘change’that is making me feel confused and overwhelmed by my wardrobe. Many of these tips help but only a little.

    • @irenerubin6663
      @irenerubin6663 2 года назад

I’m not Emily but this is what I did: Start by pulling out just basics. Then pull out what you absolutely love. See how you can work these together. Sometimes when I go through a transition I find accessories can have a huge impact with basics-like a scarf or sunglasses.
Stop looking at ‘trending’ videos. They really take you away from your true self. Then ask ‘who am I and how can I express who I am through what I wear?’ Hope that helps...

I have a problem with too many bra’s, bralettes, cami’s and they all seem to have a different use with certain garments, ie. racer back t’s, need racer back bra’s, etc. It’s driving me nuts! i also tend to hang onto scarves and belts. Maybe I just need to start with a declutter, then organize. Hey i just solved my dilemma. But I would still love to see your organizing rituals!

It really helps me listening to what you think about your wardrobe, how you came to which conclusions. I'm working on transferring this train of thought onto my own stuff. I had two revelations during the last two months, first that black becomes even darker if I add a little bit of contrast (I'm owning some pieces with small white prints now, never dreamt of that), second that I was mistaken by believing that I didn't have enough basics, it was the other way around, I needed some, not many, layering and sprinkle pieces, and this really released a whole bunch of stuff, like a clothing miracle 🤗😁

My dilemma in getting rid of items comes in knowing that the majority of what we donate to charity is either landfilled or discarded/burned. I hate knowing that and tend to keep items in my closet to avoid this. I'd welcome your tips! :)

I really enjoyed this video. I have curated the new wardrobe for Spring/Summer. I could use a few more things but I really don’t feel like shopping right now. I feel pretty content with what I have. I want to share where I am at and how I am going to proceed with all of this minimal wardrobe stuff. I bought too many of the same style 🙄 5 collared shirts & 5 balloon sleeve blouses 🙄 Once I realized what I had done I shifted and looked for other shapes that fit my body type. ☺️ I purchased thrift & new better quality and affordable quality, everything is holding up well. Moving forward I am focusing on only better quality & flattering shapes on tops & dresses and better quality sleepwear. I already have the list (in my head) for FALL/WINTER. I only need 2 sweaters, one boot & one loafer or brogue shoe & one handbag. I am also no longer buying a million zillion sweaters (I live in the desert 🏜) and I am going to start incorporating colors that are complimentary since I kinda don’t always enjoy the blue, black, tan life. I hope any of you thinking about actually acting on these suggestions Emily put out should take baby steps and start small it’s a constant process but it’s super liberating. These are some of the brands I will be purchasing with in the future Universal Standard, Chico’s, Thursday (shoes), Office of Angela Scott (shoes) & Printfresh (PJ’s). I would love any suggestions on a good sweater company. ❤️
