    One of my biggest stumbling blocks when decluttering is keeping items that are similar to what other people wear (and look great in), even though they just don't look or feel right on me. Great decluttering video anyway.👏

    I think this is likely the ONLY declutter video i've watched all the way through. Its especially useful to me as a frequent declutterer because I'm moving to France from Australia next year early 22 so i've been decluttering EVERYTHING! I find a great motivator for really paring down what you need is thinking of paying for shipping costs... that's helped me get rid of lots of things I was hanging onto. Such a useful video thank you!

    I would like to see the Directors Cut! 😂 It's so helpful to hear your arguments while decluttering or not. Could watch this hours and hours as a warmup starting my own challenge. And as my loveliest english lesson as well. I'm 55 and from Germany, and my english habits in school were very, very bad, so it becomes hard to confront me with any english content. But it feels cosy to listen to Your voice and content and only sometimes it is necessary to use help by a translation App. This morning I stand up and the first thoughts in my head I heard myself saying were english sentences. It's so amazing! Thank you so much for this good vibrations and lessons in love! 😉❤

    Just what I needed today LOL I’m “trying” to declutter but I have such a hard time... as a very moon 🌙 person I dress for my mood so there are many “me” to dress and I have quite the eclectic style.
    The one thing we all agree ( 😂 sounds like a multiple personality disorder ) the fabric! Yes! That’s how I can get rid of clothing. I don’t like polyester either.
    Love Gus advice! He is so adorable 😍
    Emily in your intro you mentioned not feeling the difference of the new year. True it’s not in the outside. Begins inside everyone of us and has to do with clarity of what makes us feel good and bad and take the choice that feeds us and enrich our lives and those surrounding us. If everyone did that the inner work will soon translates to the outside. Thankfully we don’t need to single handle change the word. It’s all about inner and our surroundings.
    I actually did feel the change at Solstice. The sun is brighter, the birds are more animated and my dreams have been super bright/real and lucid.
    Avoid watching the news. It ruins our vibes 😉

    I also hate those wide necklines on supposed “crew necklines”, they just never work right. I’m having to get rid of several sweaters that I otherwise like, because of this problem, they just look stupid on their own or with a shirt or turtleneck under them, especially with a thin neck and shoulders on the narrow side, like me. These details make the difference between loving and hating otherwise similar, or even identical, items. Pocket placement is really important, too, so many shirt pockets are so low, they give the saggy-bust look, as in sleeve length and width, where the waist is, and so many others.

    After drastically decluttering my wardrobe I've found that some of my favorite items and the ones I wear the most are my basics from H&M! This surprised me, since we are always being told that expensive, high quality clothing is the antidote to fast fashion. But since I wear the heck out of my H&M, plus it's more affordable and holding up well, I've decided it's worth continuing to shop there. Thanks for the helpful video!

      I have found that early releases are usually better quality….that goes for Old Navy as well. Avoid those $10 sweaters like the plague. I bought a jersey from Old Navy some fifteen years ago second hand….still going strong. Washes like a dream. Thing I watch for are sleeves that aren’t cut out on the bias and they strangle your arms when you move.

    Seeing your items is sobering to me. Among my closet, and extra stored bins, i have 419 clothing items (including footwear). I need to keep eliminating. It’s tough because ’I love’ everything I’ve collected through the seasons and years.

    • @EmilyWheatley
      @EmilyWheatley  3 года назад +2

      That's ok though. I think it's more about curating a wardrobe that you love and if you love all those pieces and that's what works for you, then there you go. I've gone super minimalist with my wardrobe, but don't think everyone has to go that minimal if it doesn't work for them.

    • @anng.r.687
      @anng.r.687 3 года назад +5

      @@EmilyWheatley Thank you. The trouble is, i want to be more minimalist. But i have costly blazers and pieces that i hesitate to let go of. I am sick of being ‘a storage unit’ or a ‘museum of favorite pieces’. I will continue to see if I can pare down. Last year was supposed to be a no buy year. But ended up being a conscientious LOW buy until Black Friday, then it all broke loose. I’m trying again for a strict LOW BUY-no new purchases, only replacements if necessary. Don’t quit quitting...right?!

    I have been realizing that I used to wear bright and colorful patterns but over the past few years I feel overwhelmed by those things and am wearing plain clothes and lots of grey white black navy and blues and forest green . I’m not sure what is happening.. age..personality.. shift in self image?? Anyone else noticed that things have changed over the years?
    I live in the subtropics and the sunlight is strong.. it washes out brights.. so it’s not unusual for people to wear strong colours.

      My style has changed massively over the years and keeps changing. I use to wear bold colors and prints all the time and mix them as well. But then realized I really like the neutrals. Unlike Emily it has taken me to nearly age 50 to work out that I don't like the 'attention' I feel brighter colours or patterns give. I feel I want to be classic like Ines de la Fressange, Emmanuelle Alt and stick to classic looks now so yes I can definitely relate! :)

    I have a tiny 2’ closet and 3 drawers, so I’m always decluttering because all of my items (coats, athletic gear, and accessories included) must fit. My wardrobe is mostly basics with some flair here and there and I don’t mind; I love it. If I don’t love it, it goes. If I buy something new, something old goes. I’m regretting an oversize sweater purchase because it requires too much storage space.

    I have only one pair of black skinnies, one pair of each color/was/style combo. I’m moving away from skinnies, even though I’m a rectangle, too, I love all the other newer, looser cuts better, and they are more comfortable and stay up on my straight figure better.

    I organise clothes by category and then within category by length and then by colour. So, for example, 1 category would be skirts, separated into longer and shorter, and then longer go from darker to lighther, next to it shorter skirts - darker to lighter. Tops, unless they are tunics, in which case that's a separate adjoining category, by length of sleeves, then by colour. My mom adopted this system too. Because it's easier to find what you're looking for. I know, for example that that day I want to wear a short sleeve top, and then just figure out what I'm in the mood for and what matched with the bottom.

But COVID has helped me with that, now I have no problem wearing my cashmere or other nice pieces around the house for daily life. And realized if the clothes are quality they hold up. And most of the time if something happens it can be fixed- tears, holes, stains.

I’ve gained 30 lbs. Ugh! I am slowly weaning off the meds. I’m unwilling to accept the weight, but it may be hard and a long journey to lose. I still have to get dressed. My question is, do I just let go of the majority of things in my closet that are way to small now (because they assault me on a daily basis when I walk into my closet) and just replace them later?
    As you know, it’s hard to let go, especially when you still like the item and know how much it would cost to replace.

      Yes, definitely might not be the right rule for everyone. For me it works because I've been trying to get dressed like I normally would before. Thanks Denise!

    I always set aside pieces on my dressing rack. If I don't pull them off to wear in 6-8 mos (Michigan weather is too unpredictable to go a season) then they leave.

    Major life change: from working ,business casual and some business without the casual (never worn). Now I am retired, with full closet(s) of stuff I really do not need. I pretty much live in crappy tshirts with picture and sayings, and jeans. I have jeans so long, I thinkI watched 2 towers come down in them. I need to step it up some, and purge all that work wear. I have so much that it is embarrassing to take stuff to donate somewhere. But I am sick of everything.

      Oooh I do love the idea of good ole graphic tees and well worn jeans. But I get it if you're over it. Nothing wrong with having a refresh in the wardrobe and someone will find good use out of your old clothes. Good luck on the style journey!

    I swear I've seen recent videos of you stylizing outfits that included pieces you did not show here. I could be wrong, maybe watching older videos. However, you have so few pieces showing in this video. I think you chose just one capsule to declutter? I think I can actually tackle my closet declutter if I do it capsule by capsule. The most difficult part for me is realizing that I do not/will not wear pieces that I do love and paid good money for!!!

      This was my whole wardrobe. I think the decluttering by capsule is a great idea. Definitely try that out and let us know how it goes.

    • @EmilyWheatley

      Definitely a possibility, but think it'd need more altering as it would be an odd silhouette once connected. But should maybe bring to a tailor. Thanks Sonia

    Be very careful with that 3 to 6 month rule if you live in an area with multiple seasons. My sister and I did this method and I found long after she was gone I had no sweaters in the middle of January.

    Polyester is so rough, itchy and sweaty/clammy on me that I’ve had to ban it from my wardrobe, with the one exception of skirts than I can wear with my, very old, silk slips under them. I so wish silk slips were available now, or even nylon. I tried the polyester ones, they just rode up and clung to the clothes and skin, wrinkling everything up around the hips, what’s the point? I did find wonderful silk/rayon 60/40 slips on Amazon, but the U-necklines are cut too high for V-necks, and I don’t always want a full-slip, I need half-slips/ petticoats, too, to wear with synthetic skirts. I just can’t find all the skirts and dresses I want in silk, the selection is very limited.

    • @kimberlyperrotis8962
      @kimberlyperrotis8962 3 года назад +1

      Forgot to say: I discovered that as little as 4%(!) poly content still causes this problem for me, I haven’t found anything with less to try on. Some people claim to not be bothered by it, so I wondered if it could be an allergy or sensitivity? But, then, no, my ultimate test is “would men put up with polyester shirts?”. A resounding NO. Men set boundaries that women will cross; they don’t shop where there are only three sizes or one length, won’t wear uncomfortable fabrics or shoes, insist on inside pockets in their blazers, etc. We women need to do the same, make your preferences known with your wallet. Once I searched a site for “genuine mulberry silk shirts”, one came up that I liked, when I got it it was polyester, I returned it, with an explanation.

    • @EmilyWheatley
      @EmilyWheatley  3 года назад

      Yes, great point about poly. I think women do let their standards slide sometimes for the sake of how something looks.

    I’m desperate! I’m in my 60’s and have completely lost my style. Like you, I like to wear edgy stuff. But, I can’t put an outfit together anymore. Juniors clothes are too revealing , too short or the fabric looks cheap. The clothes in the ladies dept. are so drab and shapeless. I shop on Poshmark and have found a few retro dresses I love, but mostly I end up wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Where can I learn how to put an outfit together again, where can I go to shop for stuff I like and how do I figure out what my statement pieces are? Help! My self confidence is at an all time low!
