You know what I really appreciate about your white/black/gray (for the most part) aesthetic? That is the dress code at the salon I work in. Your edgy, but not kiddish choices have helped me settle into a style that I feel sooo much better in. I’m so much more thoughtful when I shop and I am grateful for your content. At 57, it can be a crap shoot as to what looks edgy but timeless and edgy but for a 14 year old. Girl. I love you.
Totally agree…. I’m from the generation that brought punk and New Romantics etc and I’m not ready for dropping the edge…but I don’t want to look like a caricature
Im so excited, i finally broke down and got a pair of docs. A chelsea boot with a platform. I'm casual edgy so i think these will go with everything. I'm so excited. Can't wait to get them. I'm also 65 so this is brave for me
Great video. I love your thought process. I am also very particular when it comes to shoes. Could you do a video on the best shoes for rainy weather for a variety of climates (cold and very hot climates) and occasions (casual, work etc.)? It would be great to have your take on this topic. Thanks!
I've often asked myself, if I were limited to having just one pair of shoes, what would work for my style? Of course! Chelsea boots! I can totally picture them with all of my clothes and now I know what to aim for the next time I shop for shoes...this was so helpful, thanks!! 🤗🤗
I'm 50yo and I live in 11 different colored pairs of Converse during Spring, Summer, and Autumn. However, during winter I have Boots and Booties in black, brown, sand, and burgundy all in leather. Honestly, how can a person be a shoe minimalist? Shoes are too much fun!
Loafers are my favorite shoe for my capsule wardrobe. I have them in black, red and tan. Chelsea boot and sneakers are the other 2 styles I wear the most.
I think novelty shoes are fine to add after you’re set with the basics first. Basics are great for those days when you don’t have much time to think about extra details. I like to have different kinds of vibes or moods in my shoe closet. Like you say, it really sets the vibe of the outfit and it can add that styling contrast that makes an outfit more interesting
Struggling with shoes this year secondary to foot injuries. I want some Chelsea boots but haven’t yet found my match! Thanks for the video! Break the algorithm ceiling!!!
I had guessed either a simple ankle boot or a high top! I just invested in a pair of Everlane Chelsea boot this fall and they are definitely my most worn shoes. Always a classic, and like you said, there seems to be a version for most style aesthetics. Also, I’m so glad I found your channel. I started following you roughly 8 months ago. I loved it from the start and your content just keeps getting better and better. Bravo!
My guess was ankle boots because I can see it better working for a office type situation and dressing up after office into evening and yet it goes very nicely with casual pairings.
You are so right, shoes are important im a shoe person, Oxford, wallabees ,knee boots, combat boots and running shoes are my flex. I'm on.the hunt for chunky loafers this season I don't have any ankle boots because I don't like them on my size 11 foot 😅
I agree with Chelsea boots! When travelling light in spring, fall or winter it is the main shoe that I take with me! I love loafers but when it rains Chelsea boots are best and so comfy to walk in!!!!
Would love to see a video about how to manage wardrobe for 2 very different purposes within the same closet (ie I live in the mountains and have chores, but also work in a professional job) thank you!
The outfit starts with the shoes! I almost bought a pair of olive green suede boots in England. I came to my senses and bought the saddle color leather ones .😁
Oooo video idea. We’ve gone through a similar hair journey the past 2 years. I shaved mine all off a couple of years ago. It was falling out, boo. So I’ve grown it out, buzzed it off a couple of times, right now it’s short on the side, long on top. Would love to see a hairstyling video! My hair is almost same length on top, a little longer on sides (time for a trim) but blue.
Still grieving a pair of awesome night blue suede chelsea boots with pointy tips I bought from Coach years ago. The fabric eventually gave up and they were not fixable. Am on the prowl for that perfect pair again. In the meantime, my go-to / capsule pairs of shoes are black combat boots and two pairs of sneakers (a white classic Stan Smith - vegan version - and low cut skater style black suede sneakers with orange and gold details).
This is my 3rd comment but I keep thinking of more I want to say.😂 I bought a pair of knee high boot's about 5 yrs ago: I've worn them once! My ankle boots (of which I have many) I wear ALL of the time. 4 pairs of Chelsea boots; 2 black, 1 brown 1 burgundy. 3 pairs of high top sneakers. Yes, I'm kinda obsessed with shoes!
I honestly think you have the best content on RUclips in your category. Its so properly thought out and detailed. You make it look so effortless but I'm sure a lot of effort goes into each video. Quick question: can a a Doc Martin boot (with laces) be considered a Chelsea boot... kind of..?
Thank you so so much Tracey! And it isn't necessarily the same as they're different style moods but they both have an edge to them, both timeless, and both are super effortless for adding style. So similar in a lot of ways.
I always considered with the laces to be more of a combat boot and without the laces a Chelsea boot for the Docs. Both are edgy and rad! (I think the Chelsea Docs are more comfortable than the combat boots, though. I always have such a hard time breaking in the ones with the laces for Docs!)
Chelsea boots have been my go-to for the better part of 10 years now . I think about my shoes way too much - to the point of which shoes would I run into the house to grab if I could only take one pair during an Armageddon type scenario . I've got too much time on my hands . (It would be my well worn black Blundtstones)
My go to boot is a black lace up ankle boot. I have worn these since the 80s, am still wearing them now. I've never had a chelsea boot because they aren't stable on my feet. I need lace ups, otherwise they lift up at the heel, or crush my toes. But love lace up, victorian style ones and they are all the rage now.
Do you feel the Chelsea Boot could be styled for Cocktail after 5? I just can't envision it. I think it would be amazing if you did a video about styling the CH boot with various style moods
My best neutrals are brown and olive green (no black in my closet) with all of my footwear in various tones. Totally agree with the 'Chelsea' style - very versatile - and footwear is a great way to keep a capsule wardrobe looking current without breaking the bank too. When an outfit feels 'wrong' I always look at what I've put on my feet first. Comfort and colour is key. My biggest styling challenge is achieving balance in outfits - still a bit hit and miss so any tips would be appreciated.
Are you me?! Because I pretty much live in brown and olive green (and beige and sage green for the same colour scheme in lighter shades). If you're not me, you have cracking good taste!
My dream shoe was a tan and ivory 4 inch pony hair heels. They were awesome! The kind of shoe that you wanted to put under glass just to see them everyday. They are no longer with me but I still think of them. Crazy huh?
Oh teehee. . I need shoes so bad. I have hard to fit feet. But guess what I just got,? A pair of burgandy combat boots! So yeah i can totally relate to your purchase of the green pumps. Sometimes you just fall in love. I hope i get lots if wear out of these. Great video. I will start looking for a black pair of Chelsea boots. I can be sensible too. Thanks Emily. ♥️♥️♥️
Guess……high top shoes. Ahhh the Chelsea boot, of course! I am actually on the hunt for a Chelsea boot that will work for my feet. I want one that has an inch to two inch heel and is comfy for my feet. Still searching!
Chelsea and/or Combat boots? Well, I was half right lol. RE: medium width shoes. What if you have problem feet? Wide toe bed, high arches, bunions? I always try to find shoes that don't look huge and are in proportion but let's face it, most people don't have perfect feet. Comfort and style is very challenging when it comes to shoes!
This is great. I will tell you tho, that some of us cannot wear a medium width shoe. The widths are determined by the size of your feet. My feet are shaped differently from each other and very wide, so finding ANY shoes that fit is already challenging. Much less cute shoes. However, if I find a chelsea boot wide enough for my freaky feet, I will buy them, wear them, and cherish them, because I agree that they are the most versatile shoe for my wardrobe.
Shoe: If you were saying wintry months, I would say a boot that covers the ankle. But if you are saying all year including hot days, a boot won’t do, (not in Southern California anyway) so get a cool Nike Air Max, or Madewell or even fun colored Diesel runner (tennis shoes) in fun colors neutral enough to go with everything like yellow, red, black, or green or blue. I love my yellow Everlane runners. I think pink is neutral.
I would like to make a request ;) Any chance you're willing to do a video that focuses on the styling of socks? I'd love to know your thought process when choosing socks for your outfits and how to play them up.
I have a love/love relationship with shoes and will often design my outfit for the day around them.(Rough modest estimate 100 pairs). Theoretically I agree with the boot concept except they're rarely suitable in Australia's hot climate. Sneakers are a lighter and far more popular over here although less the high-tops. Still really like them though.
Haha! My current absolute favourite footwear is my pair of dark brown ankle boots from Thursday Boots. I have had ankle boots ever since secondary school and can't imagine trying to live without a good pair in my wardrobe. (My second favourite pair of boots happens to be a mint-green pair of desert boots - I believe you call them chukka boots in the US? - that I will absolutely be rocking come spring/summer (and want another pair in the more classic sand colour because I have zero clue where my previous pair of those went. I think they may have accidentally gone to charity with some of my other missing clothing items, but that's a whole different story!) Flat ankle boots are my jam, very closely followed by my Converse high-tops. I do have a pair of Chelsea boots - I bought a pair from Asda (I guess the equivalent would be Target or Walmart) to see whether it's a style of boot that would work for me and I'm currently looking for a better and more long lasting version because yes, I very much wear them. (Currently haunting the Clarks website and deciding I want All The Ankle Boots!)
Love all of that! I call them desert boots but I think a lot call them chukka. I have a go to pair of brown Clark desert boots that I'm obsessed with too. Thanks so much for sharing with us! Good luck on your hunt for the right Chelsea boot!
@@EmilyWheatley The mint green desert boots are Clarks' Desert 2 style and they are SO COMFORTABLE! With a bit of a wedge (maybe as much as half an inch to an inch?) but very very cleverly hidden. Highly recommended, if they have them in a colour you like (they have them in black suede, silver and leopard, and I could see you rocking any of those!)
I love my Chelsea boots, my 40 yr old brown docs and a pair of monk strap lugsole boots of mine. None of those are practical in 100 degree weather so I have two pairs of sandals I wear most of the year. The only thing I’ve ever disagreed with what you’ve said is, dark green to me is a definite year round neutral that also can serve as a colour “low light”. I liken it to a flower garden that hosts every colour but is predominantly green. I feel I’m really missing a pair of Clark’s desert boots in my wardrobe which I could wear year round. I tossed them when I was more interested about “in style” rather than “style”. I did a big declutter of my necklaces last night (thank you) but scarves may be left alone. I bought some beauties (no name brands) in Paris and I like a cheeky little scarf now and then. Plus they don’t take up much space or overwhelm me. Belts are next. I don’t need 15 black belts. Right? One elasticated, 1 western, 1 spiky, in black, dark green and brown, 1 silver. 10 belts total, Thats my goal. I’m going to cry over earrings I think. I made a stand that holds 96 pairs of earrings and it’s beyond capacity, I probably have another 25-50 pairs. I leave the house about once a week so I would have to wear three pairs (more like 2.7) each time for a years worth. And I only have two holes. You have great taste in shoes! I’ve always gone for the same type, it has to have an edge. Why I drool over Trippen and Fluevog, I want to adopt them all. Anyways, I don’t know why I write so much on your videos, ha but you are still inspiring me greatly, thank you🌸💕🌸
Yes, I do a agree that a khaki green is a great neutral. I have quite a bit so i'm not sure how I forgot to include. And I love my clarks desert boots, definitely an easy go to! Thanks so much for sharing with us!!
I'm actually going to disagree about the medium shoe width. Since I've started playing with more volume in my tops and bottoms, I found that all my outfits felt off or heavy, until I added a few slimmer shoes into my wardrobe. But I'm loving the content and think you have one of the best channels on RUclips.
Chelsea boot, I ordered and received my Chelsea Dr. Martens so excited! I live in AZ and I'm fighting the need to wear, but it's 87 during the day so not there yet. Also, any good ideas to break in Dr. Martens? Love this video, great job!
Hi Emily! I'm a plus size 50years old,I'm 170 cm high, UK 22, my legs are not thin unfortunetly. Do you think, Vagabond boots are for me too? (sorry for my english)
Mary- I am a full believer that if you feel great in them, then rock them. There shouldn’t be an age limit. It’s how you feel that counts. I say give it a try, why not.😀
You can wear whatever you want, at any age, if it makes you feel good! (Depending on your comfort level in them - they are SUPER flat-soled! - you might want to consider inner soles with arch support, though.) I'm in my forties and the only reason I don't live in my Converse all the time is simply that I'm on my feet all day and they do get a tad uncomfortable when standing on a concrete floor for eight hours. You might also like Beth Djalali - her channel is 'Style at a certain age' - for more fashion/style stuff. She is a little more age-specific (though I am a firm believer in that anyone can look stylish at any age). Other people I like are Lauren McKinney, Alysssa Beltempo, Marie-Anne Lecoeur, Audrey Coyne and the amazing Karenbritchick - they've all got gorgeous taste and very different styles.
Aw we got to see baby Emily in her cute shoes learning her lessons awww okay... I'm done. Hehe I love shoes. But no heels for me, I work on my feet all day. Gotta be comfy. ... What Chelsey boots?! Lol I think I win!
If (when) you check out my shoes, you will find I value foot health! Shoes affect posture, which in turn affects whole body health. Hurray minimal shoes: foot shaped, flat, flexible, and fixed (onto the foot.)
The width is very important - didn’t realize how much it can throw off everything. Last year I bought a pair of Marc Fisher light colored lace up booties online , without trying them on - they immediately were returned - the toe came out wider than the shoe itself and they looked like clown shoes on me!!
Hello Emily. I love your ideas. I bought a pair of white plastic boots for snow. And I'm looking forward to wear them here in Wisconsin Can you show me some ideas? Also I would tell you to go to Sao Paulo in Brazil to see new ideas. You would love it. You don't need visa. Just a passport. Winter there is in June till Sep. Take a chance. Love you.
Ohhhh, you are not alone. I was trying to low key “jump” and see over a divider at Home Goods to check out this woman’s shoes. 😂The rest of her outfit was so on point and intentional. Sadly, I never saw. But shoes… ohh, they add so much. 😍❤️Brilliant video 🙏🏼
I have a super wide foot from running barefoot during my third grade growth spurt. Everyone in my family have AA feet….me? Last time I used a Brannock Device to measure my width it was D….for dammit I will never wear cute shoes. Take a hint from the ugly stepsister and cut off my pinky toe (Grimm version) to wear normal width shoes. Have created a wardrobe around the footwear I can wear all day.

Just wear them wear them wear them. Especially on days you're doing a lot of activity. I don't really have any hacks unfortunately.
Great points as always and your shoes are always perfect for your look! 😍
I knew you’d say Chelsea boots 😘
Hi Emily! I'm a plus size 50years old,I'm 170 cm high, UK 22, my legs are not thin unfortunetly. Do you think, Vagabond boots are for me too? (sorry for my english)
Emily, curious..how do you store your shoes?
I have some I keep in their shoe boxes. Then others on a shelf shoe rack.
All black Chelsea boot
Very good :-)
Can an older woman (70s) wear high top sneakers?
Mary- I am a full believer that if you feel great in them, then rock them. There shouldn’t be an age limit. It’s how you feel that counts. I say give it a try, why not.😀
You can wear whatever you want, at any age, if it makes you feel good! (Depending on your comfort level in them - they are SUPER flat-soled! - you might want to consider inner soles with arch support, though.)
I'm in my forties and the only reason I don't live in my Converse all the time is simply that I'm on my feet all day and they do get a tad uncomfortable when standing on a concrete floor for eight hours.
Rock them :)
Absolutely!
I’m guessing Chelsea boot, but because of my high instep, I find them very difficult to get my foot into so I just go for an ankle boot.
You guessed right!! Thanks Kathy!
Aw we got to see baby Emily in her cute shoes learning her lessons awww okay... I'm done. Hehe
I love shoes.
CHELSEA! I guessed right!
Yay!
I wish I knew of more leather boot brands, esp that offer wide calf.
Love your vids.
Thank you!!
The width is very important - didn’t realize how much it can throw off everything. Last year I bought a pair of Marc Fisher light colored lace up booties online , without trying them on - they immediately were returned - the toe came out wider than the shoe itself and they looked like clown shoes on me!!
Glad you agree! Thank you Wendy!
Chunky ankle boot ? ⭐️😊🙏🏼❤️
Yay! ❤️
Haha very good!
👏!!!! That's all!😄
Especially since becoming a wheelchair user. Without even thinking about it.😂
Hi top sneaker
So close, definitely a close second.
🍎 🤗
:-)
Hello Emily. I love your ideas. I bought a pair of white plastic boots for snow. And I'm looking forward to wear them here in Wisconsin Can you show me some ideas? Also I would tell you to go to Sao Paulo in Brazil to see new ideas. You would love it. You don't need visa. Just a passport. Winter there is in June till Sep. Take a chance. Love you.
Fashion sneakers are my guess.
Chelsea boot
I guessed right!!
Haha, definitely not alone there. Thank you Karel!
Yes that they have sore feet or bad knees
I have a super wide foot from running barefoot during my third grade growth spurt. Everyone in my family have AA feet….me? Last time I used a Brannock Device to measure my width it was D….for dammit I will never wear cute shoes. Take a hint from the ugly stepsister and cut off my pinky toe (Grimm version) to wear normal width shoes. Have created a wardrobe around the footwear I can wear all day.
Fab👍❗️😊
Thanks 🤗
Edgy shoes
High Tops or Boots😉
:-)
Combat boots
You’re gonna say your high top boots in black.😀
Yes, very close!
A pair of high tops. Or black boots. Lol that's my guess.
Doc martens or sneakers
