Hey guys here we go with another MSR Whisperlite Universal stove alcohol burn test and water boil test. Enjoy the video and feel free to comment. Thanks for watching!
@@the_guardians_of_the_universe using the standard jet, the flame did not last very long. I went through almost one box of matches to cook a cup of coffee. With the modified jet it works.
If your on a lake in the winter, and in a situation, a camp might have a bit of voda or alcohol or rubbing alcohol, or a propane bottle or some kerosene or lamp oil. The more options your stove has the better! Great video.
Hey guys,I followed you to mod my ukjet open big to 8mm,and now,it can burn all of fuels in the earth, like alcohol, canister, gasoline, white gas, thanks for your video!
Very interesting. Alcohol burns cleaner than white gas. SO...QUESTION: Any idea WHY MSR states this is unsafe? (The flashpoint and ignition temps for alcohol are higher than for white gas which makes alcohol technically safer.) MSR also states that alcohol will damage the bottle which is hard to believe unless they mean that that alcohol will degrade the o-ring seal faster. Ideas?
Great video, thanks for posting. It was interesting that the Whisperlite was no faster than a Trangia with alcohol. It’s worth noting that alcohol will damage the MSR fuel bottle if it’s left in there.
Andrew Oliver what have you encountered? What “kind/variety” of alcohol caused you concern for damage? In other words was it methyl, grain, rubbing alcohol, etc? And also what length of storage time was it? Was it with the fuel pump attached or the regular/basic fuel bottle cap? Did you encounter damage on the bottle or the plastic parts? Was your stove and bottle relatively new or an older-ish model? I just realized this probably sounds HIGHLY confrontational with these questions but I absolutely DO NOT intend it to be. Just curious if you can share your experiences.
Camping Hack #0 I used an aluminium fuel bottle from Sigg for methylated spirit for my Trangia. The alcohol created pits in the metal bottle and within a year the bottle began to leak. The MSR bottles are very similar.
Andrew Oliver thanks for the update and sharing. I’ve never stored alcohol in the bottle long term ie 1 month. Good information to know. Again thanks for sharing your experience. Have a good one sir!
i think it would be impossible. those oils have the boil point way to high and they would be clogging everything as the dissolved solids are left behind.
Hi, Your video is interesting. As I’m not speaking very well, could you describe for more precisely which is your modification for the UK jet. Yesterday night I tried denatured ethanol for the first time with my universal stove (and standard uk jet), and the combustion stopped almost 5 times in 5 minutes although the tap was full opened ! (When I tried to reduce the flow the flame was going down almost immediately). Thanks for your help...
Thank you for the video. I modified my UK-jet by drilling a 0.5 mm hole (instead of 1/32" = 0.79 mm) and it works great for ethanol without spitting.
have you experienced the flame went out when burning alcohol/ethanol as the fuel?

These stoves can burn almost anything. I haven’t tried it yet but..I have seen others add an adapter to burn propane.
I would use alcohol directly in the priming plate for priming on long trips, since it burns cleaner than gasoline.
It seems like that is common among users. It leaves no nasty soot under the burner. Right-on.
Awesome video. Thanks.
BUG OUT BAG TIME=GREAT VIDEO=I WILL BE BUYING ONE-THX
Good choice for a full size bugout bag.
spicecrop ... agreed!

Alcohol will eat the aluminum, same reason you dont put vodka in a aluminum canteen

@@AndrewOliverHome I might suggest using the lacquered fuel bottle from Primus. It'll be safer to store alcohol, than SIGG or MSR fuel-bottle.
@@AndrewOliverHome simalarity dose not mean quality tho
Great video. Any chance you can try the same test with HEET which is methyl alcohol. Thanks.
• USPCompact45 • I did use Heet in the previous video. Check it out.👀
Has anyone tried burning olive oil or any vegetable oil in one of these?
i think it would be impossible. those oils have the boil point way to high and they would be clogging everything as the dissolved solids are left behind.
Have you tried it with yellow bottle Heet?
Yes. I have. Check out some of my previous videos.
does denatured alcohol works fine on these stove?
My MSR fuel bottle got a holes ... After few month of storing it.

can you still burn Kerosene with the modified jet?
spicecrop that is an excellent question. I have not tried it. But I will and update you.
Kerosene flame does not work with modified jet.
@@campinghack0675 thank you sir for updating, it is very informative!
