My Dad took me to see the Five Pennies when I was 11 yrs old. I loved it and bought the album and I’m still playing it at 71. Thank you Dad for introducing me to jazz and to Danny Kaye, a great person and actor!🎶 🎼 🥇
they don,t make classics like this anymore.just beautiful.

One of the most beautiful voices EVER!!! It has a velvet quality that very few singers are born with! And also the arrangement, the tonality of the song, the instrumentation and Barbara Bel.... IT'S JUST PERFECT!
I must have been about ten when somebody gave my father a large collection of vinyls and amongst them was the soundtrack to this film. I remember falling in love with this particular song, learning to sing it and playing the album repeatedly. This morning, for some reason, I woke up with Lullaby In Ragtime in my head and it's still as beautiful.
I just love this song the singer...been hearing it since the 70's..I'm 63 now and I sing it to my granddaughter Eleanor and truly she gets rocked to sleep.
This heartwarming and soothing song "Lullaby in Ragtime" was brilliantly composed and beautifully written by Ms Sylvia Fine for her husband Danny Kaye's 1959 Paramount Pictures' The Five Pennies - an endearing and moving semi-biopic of Mr Red Nichols, the great American cornet player, composer, and jazz bandleader in 1920's.The great Danny Kaye can't only be praised for his excellence in gag scenes,impersonations,ad-lib's,and snappy songs, but also in poignant scenes and in having amazing voice.
My babies cannot go to sleep without playing the pennies, sandman and signing in the rain. They love these songs and especially when there Daddy sings it to them.
Thanks for posting this wonderful song/scene. Danny Kaye was such an incredibly gifted performer (and a chef and an airplane pilot, too!). For those who don't already know, the song was written by Kaye's wife, the very talented Sylvia Fine. Eileen Wilson dubbed the singing beautifully for the great Barbara Bel Geddes.
I want iu kids to grow up with us singing dancing MD a magical word of love laughter and safe where nobody can hurt them.A world of happiness and love xoxoxoxo
Great song, great singing, great instrumental background! The female singer is Eileen Wilson who sang on some of the old Hit Parade TV shows. She dubbed Barbara Bel Geddes songs in the movie. Red Nichols' clarinet player Heinie Beau wrote the arrangement - you can hear Heinie playing clarinet also Hollywood studio sax player Wayne Songer.
It's a wonderful movie, in my opinion. I have loved it for many, many years - loved it growing up and bought it myself a few years ago. It's actually the story of bandleader Red Nichols (how accurate I don't know). Great movie, not silly at all. Highly recommend it!
l love counter melodies, there are so clever and sweet to listen to. The great one is Moonflower from the original movie Picnic with Kim Novak doing the sexiest dance for William Holden. Worth watching if you like good music and good acting. Nita.
Funniest line in the whole movie is just after the baby is born and his wife asks him, "Did you see the baby?" and Danny Kaye replies, "Yes, but I won't hold it against you." XD
So this sucks because the perfect man is dead now. Darn it and my stupid birth order! Heavens above can you please give us another Danny Kaye? Thank you.
Also see You Tube video Danny Kaye & Louie Armstrong - Goodnite - Five Pennies - Lullaby In Ragtime , from the same movie, where Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye sing these songs, while child actress Susan Gordon sings "The Five Pennies", all in simultaneous trio. An underappreciated gem!
they dont make movies like they used to.. its say.. in todays movies there is no soul, so spirit no nothing just how much money we can put into them and how much graphics and special effects. ill take old movies like five pennies and north by northwest any day
It's a Danny Kaye movie. Most of the time he's playing Red Nichols, but Danny Kaye occasionally shine through. But the early and late scenes with him and Louis Armstrong are worth twice the price of admission. "Where you been Haydn?"
I am only 51 but remember loving this movie when I was a kid. It was one of my dad’s favourites
