  • Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut depicts a surrealistic journey through one man's imagination. Alternating between abstract, artistic representations, and alarmingly realistic scenes, the film takes audiences through the journey of one man's day coping with anxiety and heartbreak. Come Swim premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2017 and Cannes Film Festival 2017.

This film is what art is all about. It's real, uncomfortable, raw, in your face and makes you think about life and its struggles. Kristen, in her first film, achieved what very few directors achieve even after many projects and bigger budgets. She went against the grain and actually portrayed real psychological struggle all people experience in real everyday life. The moment I saw the wave that could not break and a guy at the bottom of the ocean, I knew this was a start of something amazing, scary and beautiful at the same time. It felt so real, as if I experienced this before. Cool thing about this film is that after all the struggle and psychological build up the guy experiences, the struggle goes away and he feels ok again, just like in real life. Come Swim is an invitation to let go of deep psychological trauma and start to feel normal again. I just discovered Kristen and her amazing talent as a filmmaker, and definitely looking forward to watching more of her movies in the near future. This was truly an unforgettable movie experience.

Come Swim isn't just a film, it's a cultural reset, it's the oxygen you breathe, it’s a lifestyle, a reason to breathe, an escape from this cruel world, its art, the first gift you open on christmas, a hug from a loved one, everything you’ve ever wanted.

it's weird and painful to watch, cinema at it's core is entertainment, your priority is to entertain while leaving your own fingerprint, you can convey message but cinema is not supposed to make you want to kill yourself or make you feel like you are drowning. Kristen is of course intelligent and i admire her but i am not impressed.

Drying out and parched yet drowning. Awake in a nightmare or living a nightmare while awake. The voice inside his head warring with memories of love lost. Trudging toward the currents despite his hatred for water. Drowning when all he wants is to float. The film started with a big wave but ended in still water.

Kristen is one of the most brilliant artists of our generation and not only because of her acting skills. Her mind works in such a beautiful and different way than most of us. She's so smart, intelligent and fascinating. The way she thinks is fascinating. The way she talks is fascinating. It's like you could hear her talking about something all day and never get tired of it because you know that she has so much information and interesting points of view inside of her mind. She's so strong and she fights for what she believes/wants. She inspires me. I'm completely fascinated by her, everything about her is involving. I've been a fan for ten years now, but she never stops amazing me. She's so intense, passionate, so fiercely devoted. I love her passion and her strength. This short is a proof of how amazingly talented she is and I wish the whole world could see her through my eyes. Shine on, Kristen! I admire you so much. You did an awesome job. ♥️

Everything about this; the cinematography, acting and most of all the directing is just absolutely fantastic. I can't believe this is Kristen's first film yet in those 17 minutes she's managed to perfectly portray my own anxiety along with many others. That surreal, amazing moment when your idol turns one of your reoccuring ocean/tsunami dream into an opening scene of her first short without even knowing it... it’s like she has gone into my head and transfered it to screen. 5 years ago (pretty much to the day) since I last met her in London and gosh what a journey it has been. I love the wave in the beginning and the way this film ends. I find the wave exhilarating and wonderful and the ending that feeling of relief and connection and coming fully into life really for me speaks the title where like emotionality and belonging come together into movement and being 'held' in life or in the sea in this case. Like waking up from anxiety and greyness and alienation. Great.

Visceral. Engaging. Relatable. The opening scenes of the water are captivating. You can feel the pull of water under the confines of gravity being pushed into the curl of a wave. Facing forces we must all contend with and battle against, as deep thinkers it often feels like a constant push to grasp the nature of life. Like trying to capture water in the palm of your open hand. You crave to capture every particle but it's just not possible. An endless seeking, an endless thirst. Droplets of peace to be found along the way, except what we truly desire is an internal relaxation, a place where we can find a wordless feeling of calm serenity that seems no where to be found in this spiritually impoverished world. The inevitably of the crashing of a dark wave expresses this. Overall this film conveys a dark mood of drought that I can identify with. The reality of simply being alive in a human body can be crushing. Similarly, facing loss of a relationship, someone you once shared intimate baths with (that's how I imagined their conversations) and they no longer are physically by your side. The memories of your cherished time together playing on a loop. This film captures this concept so well. Perceiving the world through human eyes, creating understanding within a human mind, it's all beautiful, yet tragic. We consume water to survive, but it's never enough to quench a thirst for more. More of what? The actor himself doesn't know what he's seeking from the water. He drinks and he drinks yet his heart is still dry and broken. His day job gives no satisfaction, only an escape, an opportunity to provide. Where can real peace be found? In his sleep he finds no ultimate rest. Never enough water to ease his heartbreak. Memories can haunt you as they are so easily replayed in the mind. Water is an ancient medium that lends to exploration, sustainment, freedom. To me this film explores the fluidity of water as it parallels with the ever-flowing movement of life. We are all forever transforming. Never the same. Our bodies, our cells rearranging. We can try to attach ourselves to a moment, a person, an idea; but in the end it's all fleeting. The transitory nature of life and the people we are surrounded by can be overwhelming at times, especially for an empath. Eventually, he runs to the water for release. Let the waves surround him and maybe he can find some peace. He feels fleeting pure joy in the surrounding cascades. It's in the water he is ultimately able to realize the deeper purpose and free himself. He creates a relaxation from himself and his own perception, floating freely in the ocean, he restores his wellbeing. Mental illness, depression and anxiety, is so often a warped perception created in the mind. It's up to us to free ourselves from our diseased perceptions and create the strength to endure. Ultimately, he creates a place of peace within himself, in the lapping of the sea. Everything else, every droplet, is ephemeral. It's just hard to accept the reality of life sometimes. KS debuts a masterpiece with the film. I'm thirsty to see more.

This was exactly how i felt when my partner broke up with me. Its the constant feeling of not understanding what makes each second uncomfortable. Having to learn that those are anxiety attacks yet not knowing at the time because all you feel is that drowning and being so thirsty at the same time, being in so much pain. This movie captured what it felt like getting through every day.
But to all out there feeling the same, know this: it will hurt, it will hurt, it will hurt, then it won’t.

I think I get it. Sometimes when words aren't enough, film can say it clearly. And this says to me when life tries to drown you, sometimes your head begins to tell you you stink, and it's hard to remember the ocean is a liar. It shouldn't be a struggle (to feel okay). Something about this message reminds me of Michael Jackson's Scream. Truer words (were never spoken). Thank you.

I was so excited to watch Kristen's film... especially one she conceived and wrote. It's a glimpse into her mind. I'm sitting here digesting it. What I got was ..... a guy who was distraught and haunted by his past. I think he killed, or was part of the drowning of, his lover. His guilt torments him (ala The Telltale Heart) and it follows him into his recurring nightmare. He can't tell anyone about what really happened. It's eating him alive. His conscience wants him to die the same way.... but he's afraid. He's drawn (or lead) to water to quiet the demon of his mind. No matter how much he consumes, it won't stop. He finally ends up in the same water where it happened. He tries to recreate the circumstance, but fails. It's not his time. The voices stop. He is free.
On another note.... it's interesting that Kristen chose to narrate the voice..... we've heard that before.... plus the nearly same shot of a body rolling under a strong wave....... I can't help but make the comparison. Is this an analogy of HER recurring anxiety that she's been tormented with.... but has come out of? I sure would love to sit down with her and pick her brain about this.
I'd love to hear what others took away from this. Yes.... I'm late to the game.

Damn I'm really impressed by this. That wave at the beginning was genuinely scary, and I loved the journey through carefully chosen settings. Deep, unyielding It's just the right amount of mystery and abstractness without being pretentious, but treating the audience with respect by not giving a "AND THIS IS WHAT IT ALL MEANT" sequence.

Astonishing. I feel like this film is up to a bit of interpretation. To me, I saw somebody's need for an intimate love in their life. It's as vital as water. The problem is that no matter how much love they try to get... it's never enough. They keep running up dry. The final ocean scene is actually the beginning of an endless cycle. That's just what I got out of it. Brilliantly done 😩👌🏼

I am in awe of Kristen. I love all of the symbolism and all of the achingly real scenes. All of the shots mesh together so well in a raw, real, and relatable experience. I am so proud of Kristen. I love how she portrayed these experiences and made them all so real and incredible.

    My interpretation:
the guy in the movie is Kristen herself.
the wave that comes over him is the wave of popular outrage that came over her after her cheating of R-Patz.
she sank to the bottom to stay out of the wave (after the scandal, she didn't film for two years).
all this mumbling in the background is a conversation between two lovers in a bathtub, her memories of their affair.
when the guy comes to the beach and takes a dip in the water, it's symbolic of Kristen's return to an environment she covets: film, art, media.
she learns to swim alone, she's no longer afraid of anyone.
    Did I leave anything out?

Many viewing thru the lens of anxiety/depression (and I feel that too)
Being a closeted bi, balancing sexuality and an intensely religious upbringing...this speaks to me deeply..
So so proud of this woman ❤️ Hope to see more of her in this way.
