I’m Dutch, and I don’t understand this joke, I don’t know anything about tulip prices but I’m pretty sure they are cheap and clogs are also not expensive, clogs also don’t have a set price i think
@@averyrealnamethatismyname9495 the Tulip Panic was a period in Dutch history where tulips suddenly became all the rage, to the point that they couldn’t be grown fast enough to keep up with demand. This lead to the flowers being worth more than their weight in gold. Tulip bulbs were so valuable that a black market popped up essentially overnight to sell them
@@averyrealnamethatismyname9495 No worries, it's an obscure reference to people in the Benelux, I imagine, but a relatively common meme in the anglosphere when money is involved. It's a reference to 'tulip mania,' a sudden increase in tulip prices that occurred around the 1600's. It was further popularised by an advertisement for... I think an investment firm? Basically, tulip bulb prices skyrocketed (as in: competing with real estate prices) for, in hindsight, silly reasons, and it became a financial bubble that soon popped and went into historical infamy. As for the clogs, well, that's a pun on the 'laughing in' meme. It's usually represented as laughing in a certain language, then mutated into laughing in a concept as it were a language, but I only meant it as Dutch wearing clogs, since the stereotype of the tulip farming Dutch overlaps with that of the clog-wearer. But, that said: I'm Belgian, aka the punchline to the joke in five countries, so please believe when I say it's all in good fun. Always happy to help out our neighbours to the North. I'd say I'm always willing to lend a hand, but that's a phrase that raises a few eyebrows coming from us Belgians, so...
@@averyrealnamethatismyname9495 Your history teacher should review his material... tulip bulbs became more valuable than houses during the panic in 1637. Pretty famous example of a market bubble.
My friends and I did something similar on runescape actually. We would purchase massive amounts of logs of different variety in order to drive the price up, hold them for a bit, then sell them all at a massive profit.
Me and my brother did the same thing on the World of Warcraft realm that we were playing at the time. We bought all of certain materials of which we knew they were in demand for crafting and then flipped them and massively inflated prices. Sometimes at ten times what they were going for on average before we came along and utterly ruined it for everyone. It didn't matter to the buyers though because they would still purchase everything we put on the auction house. We would then move along to another material while the one we just ruined would stabilize and return to where it was. It was fun while it lasted. We quit WoW over 10 years ago now. But I have some pretty fond memories.
"Practicing a monopoly is illegal, however large companies find ways to 'get around' the laws of the countries in which they are installed..." Does this apply in steam?

I love the fact that he paid nearly £90 for items that are worth about £2, sold one item for £10 and then decided that it means he made a profit, when in reality, he has 68 items left that are still worth a collective £2. It was good fun to watch but the only reason he was able to affect the price of the items was because he was overpaying for them himself (and then not selling them because they were overpriced)
As of July 13th 2021 (11pm CST) the cucumber emote is sitting at $3.19USD with buy orders of $1.51USD. And the highest selling price in history was $11.47USD with 5 sold at that price!

Imagine living in a world where its entire economy can be controlled by a few people establishing monopoly in the market... Oh, wait...
When I first started buying items on steam, I realised that a number of items had the same seller. So I had a hunch that the market was being monopolised by some individuals. But this video actually proves it. 😂👍👍

Spiffing Brit: getting all excited about cucumber prices.
His Dutch viewers: laughing in tulip. And/or clogs.

Isn't this what Amazon kind of did with smaller business. Also, is this technically scalping?
Amazon sells for cheaper and undercuts small businesses and then they offer free or 2 day shipping; since people are lazy as fuck and cheap, the small businesses they pretend to support go out of business.
@@TheMysteryDriver Amazon is actually defined as a monopoly, which makes things a bit more complicated than that.

In the time since this video has been posted, there are now 400 cucumbers on sell order for $2+, and 11,700 cucumbers on buy order for $1.39 or lower. Also, during the ~4 hour period that he sold a $10 cucumber, there was a total average sale price of $11.47 with 5 sold.
I have the funny feeling that suddenly no one will be able to buy certain emotes at a reasonable price...
As of July 13th 2021 (11pm CST) the cucumber emote is sitting at $3.19USD with buy orders of $1.51USD. And the highest selling price in history was $11.47USD with 5 sold at that price!

I used to play flyff, an old mmo, and I used to control the sunstone market, I would buy any sunstone selling for less than 500k and sell them for 1m, anyone who needs a bunch wont find it anywhere else, and since this item is usually used by rich players they dont care the marked up price, at some point they just assume that is the standard price.
in hindsight, you're using your "greed" to manipulate and screw over other players by making them overpay, so that you can earn some "in game gold". Nothing to be proud of ^^ people who do this in real life should take enough at one point and not always want more and more
