Well, this brings back memories! I remember watching this final alone late at night, as my family has already gone to bed thinking Finland couldn’t have any chance doing well. I couldn’t believe my eyes when those points started dropping! In the morning I said to my brother in law that Finland won. He didn’t believe me, until he red the news. 😂
I remember watching it too! I was 12 at the time, and my dad had gone to bed already but I was waching the points being counted with my mum on our knees on the floor in front of the television. 😄 I can still remember the anticipation! And we went absolutely crazy hearing that Finland had actually won! No one could sleep anymore as we were screaming and dancing around 😄 Then I remember going outside to let our dog out, and we heard someone yelling and singing and celebrating very loudly somewhere in our normally very quiet and peaceful neighbourhood 😄
Oh man that year was amazing. I remember watching it with my parents and my mother going "What, only 8 points?!" at some country, when 8 points was the best Finland had ever gotten before.
No surprise that it reminds of glam rock, because Lordi's frontman is actually the founder of KISS Army Finland and he's a huge KISS fan. That also propably explains why Lordi's first ever hit "Would You Love a Monsterman?" has a chorus that sounds like KISS' "I Was Made for Lovin' You" By the time Lordi was announced to be our entry for Eurovision 2006, lots of people told that they're gonna move to Sweden if Lordi wins. All of those were silent after Lordi won it. Love to watch your videos.
For a long time Eurovision was kind of a joke for many Finns, because it was more of a competition for Finland to not finish last than to win in Eurovision. According to the statistics I just found Finland has finished last 11 times (including semi-finals) and has got 0 points 3 times, and most other times Finland has been near the bottom of the list. Then came Lordi and surprised everyone by winning. I don't remember how many rock bands have been in the ESC before Lordi (probably not many), but since then some other countries have tried rock/metal with varying success. Lordi and last year's Käärijä are still exceptions and mostly Finland doesn't do very well and often has problems getting into the finals. Unless it's rock or metal, I guess the kind of (pop) music Finns like and keep sending to ESC is not what the general European public likes. Sweden is much better at writing poppy songs that everyone likes. The ESC kind of music is really not to my taste and most years there's only 1-3 songs that I like out of about 40 songs, but I usually still watch it just to see what terrible performances there are and how Finland and the couple of countries I like fare.
Lordi took part in Eurovision because the record company asked them. Finland just wanted to shake up Eurovision, and they sure did. sorry not the record label, but UMK.
I remember that year. There were so many acts dressed in sexy outfits, half-naked and I think many people just got fed up with that and voted for something totally different.
Lordi is epic on so many levels. Heard a Accordion version of this song and it shows the true melodies power even more. I'm not so much into metal rock at all but Hard Rock Halleluja is always a banger!
This was Finland's very first win ever in ESC. And IIRC the second sond in 2006 was mails away from Lordi. I think finnish song writers should do songs they can do the best: Metal songs \,,/ /Q\
He is really guiet and nothing like his stagecharacter in real live.seen him 2 times with his frends, not easy to understand, they are like nigh and day.
This was the first time a rock song won Eurovision, and then Måneskin did it again for Italy in 2022 with Zitti i Buoni. There are a lot of ”camp” songs in the ESC, but also some that try to spice it up a bit. It’s generally gotten better over time.
Indeed, Mr.Lordi was running a fever of 39 degrees when he performed. In his autobiography he told how he was annoyed when his voice was not at its best at the time
He sounds awesome here, grittier than normally :D Just watched their Wacken performance and this is miles better, especially the keyboardist's backing vocals.
I remember that night when Finland won for the first (and maybe last) time 😊 I was going to a nightclub with my friends and people were just nuts (Finland had just won a few minutes earlier) and celebrating! We were kind of wondering what's going on and someone told us that Finland won the Eurovision. We laughed like "Yeah right, the country that's almost always the last one.. really funny joke! 🤣". But it was true and we finally had to believe it 🎉😂
I don't watch Eurovision, but when Lordi was there I watched. 😅 I don't really like all the music Eurovision has, so I'm not so interested but Lordi was an interesting take and yes, we won that time.
It is kind of funny to watch eurovision because while some (most) performances are pretty universal, some performances are so far from finnish culture. Usually those with half naked ladies throwing their hair and waving their butts not ironically :D I suppose some countries feel Lordi or some others we as finns feel comfortable with are very far from their idea of a good show. And these kind of differences of course make Eurovision great.
@@SK-nw4ig Great thoughts there, I really appreciate the Finnish culture and that some of those performances are immediately recognized as superficial and without deeper meaning that Finns seem to like. But to each their own, it's entertainment nonetheless.
@@kv6uf yes, definitely. Not to be taken too seriously, Eurovision is good entertainment. Brainless fun in Finland too for sure, just different than the example.
I don't usually watch Eurovision, but this time around did. It was really fun. There is a saying: it's more likely hell to freeze than Finland winning ESC 😂 Later on Mr.Lordi was invited to Independence day reception by our current president but didn't attend (if I remember correct).
The high notes are actually by extra singer Pasi Rantanen(thunderstone)! Eurovision at the time did not allow any singing coming from tape so they had extra singer on the stage singing the high notes. Leena Peisa aka Awa, the keyboard player actually song lower backing vocals.
As a finn I find this channel cute and awesome💜 Thanks for being intrested and introducing our music for people outside of Finland💜 I was 6yo when Lordi won and I did lot of Lordi band play pretend with other kids when I was in preschool and I wanted to become rock star after I saw the show of Lordi in Eurovision so I started to play violin😂 Now Im 23yo and still playing and doing music(as a hobby tho but still)
