Never the less managed to get some good video and some pictures.
I was blessed by getting to see it at all. As getting to the path of totality was a bit of a mess for me.
Weather looked like it wouldn't cooperate. But the sky opened for totality! Awesome!
A careful warning - remember a telephoto lens is like a magnifying glass and will focus the sun's light beam to a spot - a very hot spot and will melt the lens aperture and damage the sensor and likely beyond. Using a mirrorless camera, and looking into the articulated LCD is no use without a solar screen will be curtains for the camera. Amazon offers a good variety of solar screen sheets and cheap. In the last solar eclipse in Austin, Texas, I used a Sigma 60-600mm Sport on a Canon R3 - all handheld throughout the eclipse removing the solar screen at the 96% totality. This April, I will get to capture 100%. For all those in the solar path, good luck and have safe fun.

@@Applefanboy2012the curtains comment was just saying you'll kill your camera without a filter. A mirror less will melt itself from the inside out without a filter.
I've got a 20 stop ND that will work just fine. Just have to make sure to put the lense cap back on between shots.
@@Applefanboy2012 - Curtains means the end of a play when the curtain falls, a metaphor for death for the camera.
SUPER HELPFUL
I've been looking forward to this eclipse since I found out about it during the 2017 eclipse. I was out of the country and unable to view it, but my wife was fortunate enough to see it in totality.
I will be traveling to Texas for the April 2024 eclipse. Since my photography expertise is next to none, and the only opportunity I will have for a dry run will be the day before, I will probably set up my camera and just shoot with a single setting. And honestly most of my photography will come from my cell phone.
The one thing I do not want to do is spend so much time messing around with taking pictures that I miss the eclipse itself. So my priority will be to see the eclipse, and take a couple of pictures as I have time.

I am having trouble understanding how to use my star tracker for the event. Polaris is not visible in the day and I will not be able to setup at night.
I am interested in shooting a wide angle shot (maybe 24mm) to include the foreground, But, if a solar filter is applied, won't the foreground be black? Does that just leave a blended shot in PS? Thank you. And I really enjoyed your talk with the Kristine Rose group.
Yes, everything but the sun will be black when the filter is on. That's why it's recommended to use a tripod and take a picture without the filter to make a digital composite image that shows both elements.

I don't think so since you're looking directly at the sun, and there is no directionality to any polarization
Great tips. I'm still not sure what to do during totality. I figure with the sun filter I'll be around 1/125 F/5.6 ISO 200. Then at totality I'm thinking I'll take off the filter and keep the ISO and Fstop the same and raise the shutter to perhaps 1/2000. It's hard to tell. I'd love to get good detail of the corona. I almost feel I won't know for sure until it's actually happening and looking at what's coming out.
Sounds good! I also plan to bracket my shutter speeds during totality from 1/8000 sec - 2 sec or so to get the full range of possibilities, and then sort it out afterwards.
@@MikeShawPhotography how do you bracket at such a high range? Or were you just saying that you set it +/- 2 seconds. Or do you manually go from 1/8000 to 2sec
You can either do it manually, or do two sets of auto brackets, offset enough to give you the full range

No, the solar filter (and solar eclipse glasses) only come off during totality. Any other eclipse stage where even a bit of the sun is visible requires filtration.
Canon R5 in combo with an RF 100-500mm and a 2x extension tube. I was planning to use a Kase ND100,000 filter. Is this acceptable or do I risk damage leaving my camera focused on the sun. If this is no good, what do you recommend?
Only a solar filter is recommended. Using a regular ND filter still has risk of damaging and frying your camera sensor.
Can someone please assist me? It's insanely difficult to find wide angle lense settings suggestions for a solar eclipse. Most of the information out there is all about telephoto. Thankfully this video mentioned the settings for when in totality but not when in the partial stages
I think my comment was removed because I provided url from another RUclipsr for you. So, here it is without the other source. Start practicing now just by photographing the sun as it is, BUT with a filter to protect your camera and more importantly, your eyes >> ISO 12312-2 Certified Solar sheets. This setting will work for all the partial stages: f/5.6, 1/1000, ISO 200.

I have a question for you. I'm new to eclipse photography and I have 2 camera bodies a Canon EOS D7 and Canon EOS M3 with both I will be using the same Canon 75-300mm lens. I am wondering which camera I should use? The D7 has 18 megapixel and the M3 has 24 megapixel. Thank you

I have this same question, i got my filter and tripod from bh
I'm thinking you remove your sun filter when in totality, keep all settings and maybe increase your shutter speed a few stops faster and set your bracketing a few stops either way. For example, I'm thinking I'll be at 1/125, F/5.6, ISO 200 with the filter. Then during totality, take off filter and I'll go up to 1/2000 and leave everything else the same. But you won't really know for sure until the moment of, but with 4 minutes of totality, that's time for trial and error.
With ISO 100 and f/5.6, I'd go with 1/8000 sec - 1/4000 sec. A shuttle speed of 1/125 sec might lose detail in the glare

@@williamcollins4373 Yes. I imagine we won’t see much with the filter on. Once totality hits, I’m taking the filter off, then put it back on when the sun comes back out.
Can I use one of the paper solar glasses over my camcorder?
A solar filter is recommend.

I would say there will be a lot of blind people buying new cell phones on the 9th.
Never point your camera at the sun when using a super telephoto lens and ND filter. Always make sure to use someone else's.
I love this guy saying that if you aren't in the path of totality, don't bother shooting it. Well sir, a lot of us either have 9-5 jobs and can't drive to a place where complete totality is happening or money is simply a factor. How about just saying that photographing a partial eclipse is still cool, but not as cool as a total eclipse.
I do appreciate the tips. However, at 10:00 "Through one of nature's most amazing coincidences..." Add that to about a bazillion other amazing coincidences in nature, and the probability statistics start getting a bit ridiculous -- as in impossible.
