  • Trends seem to resurface every 30 years when people who were consumers of a particular culture when they were young, become the creators of culture as adults. This phenomenon is called “nostalgia pendulum”. Fashion and furniture from the 90s are trendy again, as is wallpaper.

To install traditional wallpaper, I bought this Roman adhesive from Home Depot and these plastic knives. Before sticking the paper on the wall, we need to prep the surface. Drywall, plaster and mud are extremely porous and hydroscopic. They absorb water and moisture very easily. If wallpaper paste is applied directly to it, it will suck the moisture out of the paste before it has a chance to dry fully. The wallpaper will peel off because it is not properly bonded to the paste and the wall.
Now we can start working on the wallpaper. I’m going to apply wallpaper paste to the back with a brush, but you can also use a roller. Most wallpaper adhesives are made of starch or methylcellulose. You can make a homemade version of this product by mixing ½ cup of cornstarch with ½ cup of sugar and 2 quarts of water. If this wallpaper were prepasted, it would have had a dried glue backing. I would have sprayed the back with water to activate the glue. The glue needs some time to cure and the paste and water need to soak into the paper. I’m going to fold the paper on itself and let it sit for 10 minutes. This process is called booking.
It’s now ready to be pasted on our drywall. Because we prepped the wall, I can slide it pretty easily to the edge. I’m going to use this plastic knife to smoothen the paper and push out any bubbles. Any extra paste can be wiped off with a sponge or cloth. This was a trickier process than I expected and I ended up with a lot of air bubbles. But matching the design on the next sheet wasn’t too difficult. This is just a demonstration so it doesn’t matter if the edges aren’t aligned. I’m not actually going to put up a glittery wallpaper in my closet with butterflies and birds.
Peel and Stick wallpaper. As the name suggests, you simply peel the backing off and stick on your walls. However, it’s not recommended to put it directly onto unprimed drywall or even matte paint. Your wall and paint might get damaged when you peel it off. For the sake of this demonstration, I’m just going to stick it onto this drywall. First, we need to wipe the wall with a cloth to get rid of any dust. Don’t peel off the entire sheet, just a couple of inches. Find a straight edge, and slowly remove the backing as you work downwards. You can use a cloth or plastic knife to smoothen it out. If you make a mistake, you might be able to remove and reposition it.
Traditional wallpaper should ideally be installed by a professional. Peel and stick wallpaper is extremely simple to use and is DIY friendly.
Traditional wallpaper is a superior product that has a longer lifespan. Peel and stick will only last you a few years. For that reason, traditional wallpaper is better for homes and residences where you plan on living for several years. Peel and stick is better in apartments as a temporary solution.
Traditional wallpaper is more durable. It can handle humidity and moisture in kitchens and bathrooms. Peel and stick wallpaper is more susceptible to moisture and humidity. It can peel off the walls if your bathrooms aren’t properly ventilated.
Irrespective of which wallpaper you choose, you must be careful of airtight products like vinyl wallpaper. Any dampness at all that is trapped behind the paper will not be allowed to evaporate out. This could turn to mold over time. Toxins produced by fungus growing on the wallpaper can contaminate the air leading to sick building syndrome and other health issues. When using vinyl wallpaper, it is best to prepare the walls by mixing some fungicide in the wallpaper paste.

We had a peel and stick wallpaper/mural for our kids room. It took some time to install but I prefer it over traditional wallpaper, less messy. And since the wall was already painted, it was easy to remove and restick if needed. The wall was also heavily textured, which is not recommended, but the wallpaper still stayed on fine for over 5 years until we moved. It had no signs of coming off anytime soon.

Thank you for mentioning the vinyl face wallpaper issue with mold. You can use a heavy vinyl wallpaper in the upper half of this country and this is something you should be familiar with as you did a video on vapor barriers and Vapor transmission through wall assemblies. In southern climates non permeable surfaces are a No-No and thus even some of the peel-and-stick wall papers are bad because they require a slicker semi-gloss or gloss paint behind them to remove them easily later.
If you are looking for construction related topics in comparative analysis topics for new videos you might look into the differences in interior trim since that seems like where you'll be going next. You might highlight the differences between split jambs on interior doors and traditional interior door jambs where the casing must be applied after the door is hung. You might also profile the differences between traditional trim and MDF trim and why it matters Dubai the best when longevity is a concern.

Just so everyone is clear, finish off the new drywall as if you were going to paint the it with an extra coat of primer. Traditional wall paper isn’t that bad at all with proper preparation and planning. I’ll vouch for Roman brand adhesive. In fact I’ll say it’s a little easier than prepasted, though a little more messy.

I'm glad to have you cover this topic. I've thought of just framing wallpaper instead of pasting it on the wall just for ease of removal. I removed a bedroom full of wallpaper in 1 1/2 hr by spraying it with vinegar water, letting it sit for a few minutes, and then scraping/pulling it off. The drywall seemed fine afterwards.

Would you consider making a video about the health impacts of modern building materials? Older matierals have their faults like asbestos and lead paint but modern materials like framing timber, fiberglass insulation and resin/epoxy products that contain chemicals like formaldehyde and other aromatics that can mess with our body. I feel like nowdays a lot of construction is being pumped out at minimal cost and consequently long term health effects may not be a priority. Maybe a material can pass standards and be deemed safe but i believe being in contact with zero hazardous materials is always better than a small 'safe' amount of exposure, especially when the exposure is compounded by like 20 other different sources wherever you go. I just started my apprenticeship but I've noticed the lack of care for such hazards especially when i see fertility hazard symbols on products that you'd consider to be relatively safe like framing timber(apparently frequent exposure can give you a sore throat and a headache). All that said I live in new zealand and we have extremely tough building codes here and I'm still alarmed by the seemingly ignored possibilities of long term health issues caused simply by living in a home.

You are right I do see some people using very big print wallpaper these days for fun , mostly in bathrooms. I had not seen the typical 80s wallpaper with tiny little duckies or baskets of flowers coming back quite yet, thankfully!
A note on the installation, a wallpaper brush both short haired and long will make removing the air bubbles much easier and lower the risk of tearing the paper in case a tiny piece of debris Gets behind it you can always follow up with that hard plastic scraper or a metal edged painting edger as well. I find a carpenter's apron or even a full apron useful when hanging paper.
You used a product called a paper tiger to perforate the old wallpaper before removing it and sometimes it's necessary but I always advise people to simply try to peel the paper away first and even if the face of the paper comes away and leaves a paper backing on the wall as that's great! The paper backing will come up very easily with a wallpaper removal solution and then you save yourself from having to repair all the tiny little holes in the drywall. The solution enters those holes through the non porous surface of the wallpaper to get to the backing but because the little pins or needles in the wallpaper removing tool puncture the drywall paper as well the solution enters the drywall board itself and swells the paper making it tear when you remove the wallpaper, wallpaper backing, and the glue.

Idiot flippers we bought our 1970s split level from simply painted over all the wallpaper they couldn't / wouldn't remove. The entryway walls have a weird texture to them like a plastic version of woven cloth. One of the bathrooms has what appeared to be FLOCKED wallpaper that was partially peeled and scraped, and the rest they just painted over very thickly. The other bathroom has corners and cracks peeling up. One corner, the paint actually chipped away so I can see the horrid 1970s floral border nightmare.
I would love nothing more than to remove it all and have a fresh start, but it sounds like a job for a professional to get it done right.
I have noticed the current wallpaper trend seems to be to use it as an accent wall or in a small space like a bathroom. Given all the peeling with my 50 year old nightmare fuel, how well should wallpaper work in a damp environment like a bathroom? Does it typically need to.be removed and redone after a few years?

I have also seen paper simply skimmed over but again if it comes loose now and then it may not be suitable for skimming either. If it comes down to it you can remove as much as you can and make sure whats left is stable yhen skim over the surface a d apply an orange peel finish like normal drywall.

@@danielbuckner2167 If the paper is on there really good, as it often is in a bathroom, but the seams are really obvious you might want to prepare the wall as if you were to paint over it. This can be as easy as sanding down the seams or you may end up wanting to apply a skim coat. I was taught to tape over the seams with a fiberglass tape before applying the skim coat but that seems to have gone out of fashion. Skim coating sounds laborious but isn't really that hard to do once you get the hang of it. And the end result is often really good with no hint of the old paper seams no matter if you end up painting or putting up new paper.

@@blahorgaslisk7763 The mesh tape isnt good for drywall and that is why it has come ad gone. Its designed for shnthetic stucco and was marketed for drywall too afterwards. Paper tape forms a tighter bond and as anyone knows who has tried to get wet pages of a newspaper apart, paper sticks tonpaper extremely well. Sanding the edges might work as well as using a sharp razor to trim away loose edges or pieces and youre right skimming is quite easy if the person is good with a trowel.

I can't imagine using peel & stick. I love paste-the-wall type paper, while the paste is still wet you can slide the paper and make perfect pattern matches, and if something bad happens like you realize that you cut the piece incorrectly or you damaged it while putting it up, you can easily pull the wallpaper down and put a new piece up. Odor needs to also be considered, I bought a roll of peel & stick wallpaper made by a famous wallpaper brand, and it stunk for weeks! It reminded me of inflatable tubes that you use when you're swimming. The odor would not go away so I was very happy I hadn't put it up on the walls.

Interesting video and fun to watch. I remember in my childhood (so in 70's, maybe even in beginning of 80's), when my parents moved to a new place: Peeling off old wallpaper and putting new wall paper up. But in Denmark this would mostly be on brick walls, concrete walls and similar, not so much on drywalls (at least not back then, maybe a little more now). You say that traditional wallpaper is for professional work, but it can be done as diy also, perhaps at least with a little practice.

Nostalgia pendulum? Yay, large paisley prints will come back!
I've used the perforate, soak, and peel method before and had no problems at all with it. The paper mostly came off in large manageable sheets.
For smoothing out air bubbles, I would not recommend holding the tool as shown and scraping with the blade facing forward (positive rake angle). There is too much risk of the edge of the tool catching on a slight irregularity or stubborn air bubble and ripping the paper. I would recommend dragging the blade across the surface (negative rake angle) to avoid damaging the paper.

Apparently they're very popular with landlords, but it makes me wonder how difficult it would be to remove it (even just covering it up would be ridiculous due to the bumps). Not that our current place should have the paint removed - the house was built in 1914 and it's pretty much guaranteed that there's several layers of lead paint under the more recent coats of paint.
The whole thing is pretty ridiculous. What is with the popcorn paint anyway? I've never understood why ppl put it on ceilings to begin with. And putting it on walls? 🤢

I have popcorn ceilings in my house - still. Like you, I'm not a fan. At first, I thought I'd have them removed. This turned out to be pretty expensive, when all I wanted was to freshen them up with a different color. When researching painting popcorn ceilings, some painters told me it couldn't be done - when it gets wet enough with the paint, the gravity starts pulling it off in big torn sheets. However, I found a painter with lots of experience, and sure enough, as he said, he painted my popcorn ceilings with no problems. The trick is to do it in several very thin coats, allowing each coat to dry well before doing the next one. It took longer than regular painting, but ended up being less expensive than removing the popcorn and then painting. And now I have nice freshly painted ceilings. In your case, with an historic house, it might be worth it to get rid of the popcorn, which is not historically in keeping with your home. Especially if there's bead board under it! Good luck!

I hate wallpaper after removing an entire house worth of cheap raw paper from a house built in the early 60s. As you experienced, it only came off in small bits.

I hate wallpaper. It is such a pain in the back side to remove them. Which I did in the bathrooms & kitchen when I had the house built. Also the dry wall should be finished before the wallpaper before putting up wallpaper. By which I mean, all the seams in the drywall should have drywall compound applied to all joints to finish all the drywall joints.

I don't get the appeal of wallpaper, I really don't. We're already ripped out 1 of the rooms of the stuff (had 2 layers) and replaced it with nice paint, 2 of the other rooms are peeling bad, but I ran out of money for remodeling so they'll have to wait.
I have always had problems with wallpaper, just feels tacky to me even though it's more expensive and slower, I still feel like it gives off trailer park vibes, no offense. It cost me like $70 for a spray gun and around $30 of paint for more than an entire room.

Oh wow. It's so weird to see this as someone who paints walls and removes disgusting evil wallpaper for a living, for close to two decades. The key is water, not any expensive compound or wallpaper remover. Brush tons and tons of water onto the wallpaper until it peels off easy using a paintbrush. If it doesn't peel off easy after several water coatings, a large putty knife is the best way to scrap it off. Water causes no damage to the floors or carpets if proper precautions are followed, in some rare cases where water might cause an issue. A running towel is the easiest solution to collect water as it runs to the baseboards.

How about painted woodchip wallpaper? And electrical outlets? Wallpaper Steamers heat, moisturise and soften wallpapers glues without risking getting water into your electrics. Running water is a no-no for surface mounted electrical fittings. Nevermind wooden floors. And pretreatment after scoring with hot water with vinegar, or fabric conditioner, in a 1:3 solution in a garden sprayer, will soften the glue without saturating the wall or floor.

Urius, if you are using just water you might enjoy the results of heating your water first. I have found in every instance that hotter water at least cut the removal time in half has the glue breaks down better with hotter water. I also sometimes use a wallpaper remover and in some cases a gel remover but if you cannot find the colorless gel remover don't buy the colored as it can stain your ceilings if you are sloppy with it. That last tip is not for you of course but for others who may read this comment. 👍
