    The going backward was not just a device. It’s a clever way of putting the audience in Lenny’s shoes. It’s as if the audience can’t make new memories; so we see the movie from Lenny’s point of view.

    • @cgbleak
      @cgbleak 2 года назад +2

      I disagree. In "regular" chronology, it's not a very interesting story because we'd know who the "bad guy" is from the beginning. And the Sammy Jenkins material would become pretty irrelevant (but without it, the movie would only be an hour long).
      Don't get me wrong, it's a brilliant device. But it is indeed... a device.
      Most versions of the dvd allow you to watch it in correct chronological order. You might watch it once that way to answer any lingering questions (why is Teddy so interested in taking the car?), but I don't think you'll watch it twice that way.

    Yup. This story is essentially Lenny found his keys. But didn’t remember, because he couldn’t. So he just kept looking for them, over and over. Except it wasn’t his keys.
    (Maybe. Lenny is an unreliable narrator, but all the other characters, from Natalie to Teddy, are ultimately unreliable too and demonstrably so. All admitted at various points to using Lenny’s disability in some way. So Lenny does it too and uses himself.)

    Basically, healed up his own truths, to have a life, and to avoid responsibility for being responsible for his wife dying. And he repeats killing guys, over and over. I think this was Nolan's first, non indy big production movie, and i still say his best! So in essence, he is the perfect serial killer, who purposely forgets his life, to start over, and relive it over and over, to give himself purpose, and to forget that he accidentally killed his wife! By the way, his brother writes a bunch of his scripts!😮😮. Pro tip....the black and white is forward, the color is backwards. Theirs only 1 scene where the two meet. With him in the nursing home as Sammy 😮😮!

    Teddy's full name is John Edward Gammel. Edward is often shortened as Ted or Teddy.
    Another possibility is that he is actually Sammy Jenkis. If you watch the scene in the care home when a person walks between Sammy and the camera, It's his face after the person passes suggesting Sammy's story is actually his story.

    Teddy's main goal for the color scenes of this film is to get the car away from Leonard because he wants the $200,000 in the trunk (the money Jimmy brought to the drug deal). Teddy offers to take the car to get the broken window fixed, he offers to drive, he asked Leonard for the keys, etc. Because he knows if he can get the car away from Leonard he can get the money. That's why he keeps showing up around Leonard.

      Is Sammy maybe someone else though? After all Teddy says that Sammy was a con-man who didn't have a wife and it was Lenny's wife who had diabetes, so maybe Sammy was a real unmarried man who was faking a condition and Lenny mixed things up in his mind later, because if Sammy is Lenny, how can Lenny remember what happened to Sammy's wife? Lenny should only be able to remember whatever story he learned or heard about BEFORE his head injury, so if he can remember the story of Sammy's wife going into a coma he must've heard it before he got his brain injury which is when his own wife was attacked, this would mean Sammy is real and he's NOT Lenny, but if it was Lenny's wife, Lenny shouldn't be able to remember whatever happened to her after the attack because of his brain injury. So if it's Lenny's wife who died, maybe he CAN remember some things after the incident but he's getting them all mixed up, that would explain why he knows about "Sammy's" wife's coma but not who he and/or she really are and who Sammy really was.

      There is a feature on the DVD that lets you watch the film in chronological order - starting with the black & white scenes until he kills Jimmy, then all the color scenes until he kills Teddy.
      It's helpful when you've already seen the movie, but not great to watch if you haven't. Otherwise you're watching someone talking on the phone and getting help with finding his wife's killer, he finds him and kills him, realizes that he killed the wrong guy and he was the one that killed his wife, then watch him try to find the killer again and ultimately kill the only person that's actually helping him.

The fact that it takes depravity to commit murder is irrelevant, Teddy is a dirty cop who uses Lenny so he doesn't have to get his own hands dirty and Lenny thinks he's killing his wife's killer every time he kills someone and after that he just forgets, so to him he's never killed anyone other than the one guy he shot in his bathroom during the attack.

    Hey Joy (that is what I call the Mrs., not sure if it is her name or not) and Marian, I've seen this movie over a dozen times. My theory is that Lenny's wife had diabetes (she survived the attack) and was never able to accept what happened to Lenny as a result. She ended up giving Lenny the "final exam" and Lenny killed her with an overdose of insulin. Lenny is in denial, so uses the "Sammy Jenkis" story in order to not blame himself.
    So Lenny can feel in control and have a purpose going forward, he always needs to find a new "John G." or "James G." to kill.
    Anyways, this is a movie that you should watch a minimum of 3x, but can watch it again and again and still not be 100% sure of everything. Everytime I watch it, I come up with something else to rack my brain.
    This is Nolan's best movie IMO, and never seen a movie like it before or since.
    P.S. Teddy (probably my favorite character) was the only person who actually tried to help Lenny, but also wanted to use him for financial gain when he realized that Lenny would never remember getting revenge. Natalie was definitely a user and the villian in this movie.

    • @MJoy4Fun
      @MJoy4Fun  2 года назад +2

      i was thinking the same!
      i think Lenny's brain shutdown after he put it in his head that his wife is gone.. by his hand or by the attacker
      so instead of healing from trauma he uses the revenge to have a reason to live...
      furthermore his brain being unable to remember anything makes it worse, but in fact that's what helps him feel only the need for revenge.. like he said ''how can i heal when i dont feel time'' in other words.. his memory of loosing his wife is still fresh.. making him unable to forgive, move forward.. or accept
      but his pal used him for other things.. people used him without thinking how dangerous he can be... truly mind blowing movie!

      @@MJoy4Fun I don’t see Teddy as the only one trying to help and Natalie as a true villain. Teddy also toyed with Lenny, laughed at him, and manipulated him into committing how many crimes. From Natalie’s perspective, a man just showed up wearing her *lover’s clothes* and driving his car. She has to assume that he killed him.
      That said, she IS incredibly ruthless and vicious, and I think Teddy had wanted to help him before. At this point, I think he’s ok with his company, but is using him, justifying it by telling himself he’s helping him find purpose.

    • @jhornacek
      @jhornacek Год назад

      Natalie is definitely not a user and a villain - she's actually one of the most sympathetic characters in the film, but you don't realize this until the end of the movie.
      Let's look at things from her perspective. Her boyfriend, Jimmy, is a drug dealer. He goes off to meet someone named Teddy and never comes back. Then this guy shows up at her bar driving Jimmy's car and wearing his clothes. She suspects that Leonard killed Jimmy, and is sure of it when he shows her the coaster with the "COME BY LATER - NATALIE" note on the back of it, which Leonard found in "his" pocket. This was a note that Natalie wrote for Jimmy, so she knows for a fact that Leonard took Jimmy's clothes, meaning that he killed him.
      Yes, she is brutal and vicious when she torments Leonard, but this guy killed her boyfriend. She's entirely justified in using him to kill Teddy, who set up the drug deal that got Jimmy killed.

    • @anthonyzarate9807
      @anthonyzarate9807 Год назад

      @@jhornacek I couldn't disagree more. She was using Leonard to eliminate other criminals!
      Also, we all know that Leonard was generally a decent guy before the "incident", and because of the STM loss, he cannot trust anyone but his own hand writing. Natalie however, does several things that are pure evil IMO. In fact, the things she says about Lenny's wife alone are some of the most awful things you can say about another human being.
      Let's say Lenny was an evil POS criminal (for sake of argument) why would Natalie say so many eveil things about his wife, when she would have been a victim (to Lenny's evilness, manipulation, and murderous ways) as well???
      P.S. Based on the flashbacks that Lenny does remember, their is nothing to show that his wife was anything but a good and honest person. In contrast, everything Natalie says and does is cold and calculated, unless she is lying to manipulate Lenny into murdering for her. Finally, if Natalie was this fine upstanding citizen, what would she be doing dating a dangerous drug dealing criminal and working at a shady bar???
