Art had such an amazing way of describing and painting a picture of a piece of music, which almost causes you to hear what he’s speaking about. What an amazing individual he seems to be. Oh my lord, what beautiful turntables! He’s almost a magician at explaining and reviewing gear, and I love his somewhat “simplistic” approach of his explanation of extracting the sound from the grooves. Those plinths are beautiful! I’ve tried the separate stereo and mono set up thing too, and I know what he’s talking about. To do mono correctly, I personally feel you need a true mono cart, summed L&R channels, etc. Not to mention, when mono is properly set up, it can sound huge and amazing with great imaging and soundstage. Thanks so much, Ken for interviewing Art for this vid. I loved it! 🎶🔊👍🙂
Thank you for another wonderful interview Ken. I have been enjoying following Art's journey through audio since the nascent days of Listener. I am glad that he is still spinning yarns for the rest of us to weave into our music and gear perceptions.
Remember the shock I felt when I heard Art had passed around start of C19 era. Felt very sad. It’s rare to discover someone so intelligent, interesting, passionate and cool. Amazing gentleman, sorely missed 🙏✨🌔💎💙
Right on Ken and Art! (and Mikey and Herb and John and Steve-) Honestly, this channel is growing to have some of the *best* audiophile/Jazz content on the entire web. It's odd that Stereophile apparently doesn't see the value in operating in this space (e.g. the kinds of video interviews and reviews you've been doing of late.) For the love of Monk, please don't stop! :-)
Love it. Ken, you Art and Herb are the best audio writers going these days. Mikey and Gutt are in there as well. Remarkably, I stumbled across an OG Sonny Meets Hawk a year or so ago, one of my more expensive used record purchases. But, it's mint; moreover, the music is beautiful and sounds fantastic. Dynagroove, baby!
I had the same Thorens TD 124 and strange enough I painted it exactly the same colour...sold it to Schopper, the vintage Thorens-Guru from Switzerland, which has his shop only 10 miles from where I live. I miss Art, such a humble and cool guy.
Hi, Ken I have a question re: Art’s (RiP) preference for Garrard 301 based on higher torque. Do you happen to know if the TD124 mk II motor used a higher torque than the mk I ? Thanks for sharing this.
Art does such a great job. He mentioned Horace Parlan book. I just heard Horace P on the new Tone Poet release of Turrentine Comin your way. Really smooth on the piano .. Blue Note ST 84065 nice great video Thanks
If Art is checking this: Is that an Ortofon RMG 309 on your TD-124? If so, what kind of headshell/cart do you plan on putting on it? Mono or stereo? If mono, true mono or horizontally compliant? How about a Decca Super Gold? Inquiring minds want to know!
As I’ve said before, you really can’t beat those OJC pressings for value and sonics. Ken said that he rarely sees them coming in at JRC, probably because collectors hold on to them.
I saw a great Gerry Mulligan record about to be discussed but then we moved over to talking about turntables. *Sigh*... I've been waiting for you or any of your guests to talk about Jeru's work, but so far I've not found any. I hope this is rectified soon!
Art is such a great guy, full of info, I have watched his vids before. I love these interviews Ken, excellent! I wish I could afford that EMT cart but $1,990 bucks, maybe someday. cheers!
We love Art. RIP. Ken, what's the opening track to this film, please? I"d like to get a copy. Sounds like it could be a Quincy Jones arrangement, somehow.
I have a couple of the newer pressing, Yusef Lateef Eastern Sounds and Bill Evans How My Heart Sings. Both sound good enough for me. I had an early Riverside pressing of How My Heart Sings and I sold it after I got the OJC. But I will say they aren’t quite as good as my 80’s OJC’s. They’re just another level.

Monk Lp's are fascinating. Are they music, maybe not? They do not appear to meet the criteria. But is the lack of emotion or absence of in his efforts in itself an expression of emotion? Do we consider boredom, detachment, surprise.(Airy, cerebral, extroverted, whimsy).....emotions?, that enable his efforts to be seen as music. If a robot was programmed to attempt piano playing it may sound like Monk. In the right state of mind his music is interesting, even pleasurable.
You know when you were young and took some magic mushrooms and stumbled on some kind of universal truth, only to realize the next morning that it was (mostly) nonsense? I say this with all the kindness I can muster: lay off the shrooms for a while, dude...
Did you know Paul Bley’s wife ? , As you make no mention of his wife IN CASE YOU DONT KNOW she was originally knowN when touring with him as Karen Bourg I think and eventually adopted, pre marriage, the name Carla Bley. She herself has a vast Discography, starting in 1844, both as leader, composer and impressive innovator. Recently issued Trio Albums with Steve Swallow and Andy Shepherd (Life goes on! Life goes on ) And Big Band Albums. A good sampler is Carla Bley Live You also mention writer Stanley Crouch ...if you haven’ t tried any other of his writings he wrote a well received novel “ Don’t the moon look lonesome “ and another novel whose title I forget. Also a number of readable essays on race and ethnicity. I liked this vide blog as unlike lots of other ‘Stereophiles’ you never call anything ‘the best’ I feel that one man’s best is another man’s rubbish. Keep up the interesting and non pedantic work. I would have liked to have met you and chat. .
These videos are a treasure to preserve the playful thoughtful presence that was Art.
RIP Art. I loved your writing.
Only in America such a sensitive, incite-full, delightful, accessible chap of good sentiment. R.I.P.
Can't believe it's been over a year now since Art been gone. I watched this video many times thanks Ken!

100% fun. Love the Jazz recommendations. I have sooooo much to learn.

I love my jazz and my Thorens TD150. It has a modest arm and cart fitted but sounds fantastic! Great vid btw

Would love to see you do more videos like this.
He had a wonderful sense of humor, made me laugh out loud. I miss his reviews.
I miss Art every day, as does Herb

redstarwraith Check out part two of this interview, which starts with that Gerry Mulligan record.
Rest in Peace, Dudley..I miss You already..however.. going from a Linn LP12 to the Garrards and Thorens....jeebus..

What ding-dong gave this wonderful interview a thumbs down? Can that bozo please identify itself?
Idiots abound. Thank you.
I have that same OJC The Quest. So so good.
We love Art. RIP.

Its cool listening back to art. I think Art and Hurb have the same sort of voice and mannerisms, i wonder if their from the same area.
Ken - thanks for sharing
Great video ken, grtz from the netherlands
My coffee maker is very close to that green, also I have seen modern cars here in similar green shades, Mr Dudley's colour choice is mighty fine.
really contented with my 80s OJC pressings so far. I wonder if the new ojc LP reissues (on amzn) sound as good

The 2nd movement of Beethoven's Emperor concerto gets me every time...
Ken, I noticed your Thorens' platter has a wobble. Is that normal?
That color looks great!
I didn`t know that Sonny Meets Hawk existed until now. Sampled it on RUclips. Incredible band. Ordered it for my collection.
Love that Mal Waldron album!

Art was still optimistic about finding a preamp with 2 phono inputs just a month before his passing. Sure miss reading his column...
