gifts actually have depreciating returns and the first gift regardless of what it is will give you +5 if it generic/uncorrelated with a character and +10 if it is correlated with a character. The minimum returns are +1 and +6 with the same types of gifts. You have 4 gifts of each type to get additional boosts then you will always receive the minimums. Painting are not shale's favorites she's just never received a gift from you.
Jon you should be aware that there are 3 kinds of gifts: A basic gift gives +5 approval *minus the amount of times you gave a gift to that person* A thoughtful gift, ie finding the the right person who would like that gift, gives +10 with the same diminishing returns concept as before, down to a minimum of +6 And special gifts that give you some dialogue, those can only be given to the right person.
Jon, I would recommend you NOT sell all of your spare sexy heavy armor. You might use Sten again, after all. Correction, the game might force you to use Sten again, after all.
33:08 Something of note in regard to the repeater gloves is that not all "rapid aim" items are created equal. Rapid aim is not something that is either on or off, but rather a particular value that subtracts from the bow attack animation time. The repeater gloves in particular have a rapid aim that subtracts two and a half seconds, the largest rapid aim bonus in the game. This allows you to take the Aim sustained ability without suffering a slower attack speed.
Lifeward is a very expensive spell to just be set to 'Any'. She'll be spamming it all the time. Recommend setting it to fire when someones got low health.
Jon, If you right click and press inspect on the armor or weapons in the inventory, it tells you what the armor set bonus is and gives background on what kind of lore the item has. So if you are missing a piece it will let you know which. For example, your ring of +3 cunning had a item set bonus with another ring.
48:16 - Yes, there is a Juggernaut helmet. It was at the first gravestone you came upon in the Brecilian Forest, but you didn't spawn the Revenant. You should go back and get it in the next episode.

If you see some "grunt" darkspawn are just cannon fodder, they're usually just there to die easily to make you feel strong, or if they want to overwhelm you with numbers without making utterly unfair

Its really strange to me that Jon seems to read comments, he hearts a few each episode it seems (hi jon, luv ya), and yet at part 23 (!) he has still apparently managed to miss the very highly upvoted comments under every video telling him how the character dialogue works in this game. I'm not sure if the companion quests/romance options are even still available this late into the game when he still hasn't even done the introductory conversations with more than half the party (if anyone???)
Jon please please talk more to your party. You haven't gotten a single companion quest or romance at all. They won't just give you the quest like companions in Mass Effect. You need to dig into their dialogue trees until you can't ask them anything else
Jon- remember, youve got an additional weapon slot available (ranged weapon!) that you can quickchange between during combat anytime, so when youre pulling groups it helps soften them up before they get to you, as well as finish off low hp enemies as they try to run away AND reach those pesky archers up on ledges/ridges etc. Consider picking a ranged tree to slowly move up as you progress to endgame :)
"Does anyone know what a shriek is?" ... Ostagar really does make a bit more sense and ends up being a bit less spoilery if you do it after the dwarves. And can be incredibly interesting if you go there with an optional character you get much later.

Regarding the specialisations: a well known bug was that to get the reaver specialization, one could use the dragon blood on the ashes of Andraste, get the specialization, recover a save just before using the blood and still keep the specialization. tldr: it's a bit broken
I played this after the Landsmeet... And on that note, I'm glad you can switch between characters. It allows you to play around with classes and powers both for fun and just if you want to change loadouts the next time you play.
Hey Jon the Haste spell that Wynne uses constantly drains mana during combat, she will often have the ability get turned or be horribly out of mana. Stocking up on a huge supply of lyrium potions can really support Wynne.
if scattershot kills the target it doesn't hit any others for some reason burials are not done by humans because of spirits and demon, elves have even said that it's one of the smarter things human do
I do like that Jon finds Morrigan essential, and Wynne inconvenient. Almost everyone that plays takes the healer everywhere, while leaving the evil swamp witch back at camp.
I never used Wynne much either. I found her preachy and morrigan much more fun. Although I played one playthrough as a mage and took Wynne and morrigan everywhere, and it was the most awesome playthrough I ever played. Even in the earlier levels, most rooms were cleared out before the enemies even got to us...
I remember this game was hard at first but as it went on you become so powerful that everything dies in a couple of hits. It looks like you're hitting that stage of the game.
It's worth noting, Cailan didn't want to engage with the darkspawn at Ostagar. He wanted support from Orlais and Arl Eamon, but Loghain told him that the current battle plan would work. Maybe Loghain could have won that battle, and maybe he couldn't, but he's the reason the battle happened as it did in the first place.
Yup. Loghain wanted to abandon the Warden's right then and there. He didn't want Cailan to die, but he also didn't care about sacrificing him either. It's funny how Loghain who is supposed to be a Strategical Genius somehow doesn't even see the benefit in using troops of those he doesn't like to ensure a victory. More numbers is always good. Dude was off his rocker.
@@Th1sUsernameIsNotTaken Loghain spent most of his adult life fighting a war to drive Orlais out of Ferelden and establish Cailan's father as king. He would literally rather let Ferelden burn to the ground than let Orlais bring in troops.
@@shotgunshells2 I never mentioned anything about Orlais in my comment. He hates the Grey Wardens, and doesn't want to use them properly in a fight to actually kill the Darkspawn. He allows Howe to attack the Couslands main estate after their troops are gone with his very own, and they don't get any of the Howe's troops in return for this fight (makes sense as he is literally throwing away EVERY troop at this fight besides his own). He then Poisons Eamon, which also ensures his men will not come to the battle. Grey Wardens aside, he literally made it so 2 armies worth of troops weren't present, (3 if you include Orlais, but we aren't in this scenario), and undermined the King behind his back (eamon poison and Cousland take over via Howe) even in relation to internal affairs in the kingdom. Even if you don't think it's a real blight, you know there are a lot of darkspawn. There was 0 reason for the master Strategist to throw away the Grey wardens and Berserkers, even if he somewhat distrusted them, and not to include Howe + Eamon's troops to ensure it goes well. That is what I meant by off his rocker. Orlais is just icing on the cake.
@@Th1sUsernameIsNotTaken someone should've told him he could've let Orlais come in then pull back to leave orlesians at the front lines to die as fodder while bringing his forces in to flank, only pushing forwards when the orlesian line breaks, meaning Orlais has far fewer troops, meaning a potential push into Orlesian territory might go smoother....
@@soulsearcher9620 I can understand him not wanting Orlais to have reason to bring troops over. What he did internally however ensured a civil war no matter how it played out.
So, if the king, the leader of the wardens and the uncle had died as planned...and he purposely sent you and Alistair to safety...Did the king WANT Alistair to be king? 😅 Good on them, force the best option to accept his fate by killing everyone in the line of succession, and commiting suicide in a legendary, glorious fashion....😂
Wynne us supposed to have fireball. That's why cinderfall gloves drop on uldred. Also because she set people on fire in her past. Tank, forcefield, inferno, and fireball will annihilate any group of enemies that are not bosses or immune to fire. It is unbeatable so long as you start the fight from a distance and let the tank get all the hate by moving in first.
I had two mages with fire-storm (inferno?) and the weaker lightning one. Combined with blood magic the amount of CC was stupid and it even worked through walls.
I never have her when I do Ostager lol. I usually do it pretty early before doing the Circle (yes I know this means the gear will only be Red Steel and it gets stronger if you wait. I don't really care about that though)
Jon's comment that people dislike archers in this game makes me scratch my head. I was often playing the ranged archer rather then having Liliana in the party. They have no where near as much BURST as dagger rogues, making them inferior at taking down weak enemies quickly, but being able to consistently put damage on target from anywhere on the battlefield is beyond useful. Not mentioning a few encounters (like with the necromancer at the end of the video) where taking down one distant target is important, or when there are lots of traps and trash-mobs between you and the mage. Tanks block enemies, mages crowd control/support, and rogues kill mages/bosses. Archery for the win.
About Wynne, Jon you have to set her tactics! Tactics are so important in DAO. Use them. Also set the teams tactics to protect her. Shes a healer, hello! Also, she has a great mass paralyze spell if you level her up. She has a lot of great buffs and protection spells.
It is nice that it's available if you miss it the first time, but I hope Jon cleaned his hands after picking it up given where that prisoner had hidden the key
He couldn't, he did a correct thing by withdrawing his troops. Else, most of the armies of Ferelden would be dead. But that's because he poisoned Arl Eamon earlier. Although his troops wouldn't be enough, Eamon could convince Cailan to not go into straight battle there, regroup and wait for reinforcements.
@@masansr False. Loghain didn't do the right thing, because he planned on withdrawing from the beginning and abandoning the wardens. It's the only reason he tries to get the king to stay with him. He planned on killing the wardens and sacrificing the berserkers while pulling out. While he didn't plan on killing Cailan, he was still willing to sacrifice even him. Without Loghain's shit antics, The Orlais troops would be assisting, they would have had even more warden support, as well Eamon's troops, ALL of Howe's (he only gets away with this if backed by Loghain) that never bothered going to the fight, as well as Loghain's very own. Or in other words, would have had the manpower to have stopped it right then and there, and have been able to beat the darkspawn. Loghain's deception and paranoia led to countless deaths, and almost lead to the death of Ferelden, the country he so proudly boasts about wanting to protect, while doing his all to burn it to the ground. Also as a bonus: That little tunnel that lead right to the battlefield underneath the tower? Loghain's men were supposed to collapse it to ensure the darkspawn couldn't make use of it. Quite interesting how there are visibly ( and intentionally) no signs of any sort of attempt at making it inaccessible.
@@Th1sUsernameIsNotTaken Also false. I never said Loghain did the right thing. I meant, at that point in battle, he did the correct thing he could do with the knowledge he had at that point. He was wrong to poison Eamon, and deny any assistance from Orlais. But with his history, that's very understandable he would do so. He was certain that if Orlais army would march into Ferelden, they wouldn't leave (and on this account, he was probably right, Ferelden would lose all it's freedom if it allowed assistance from Orlais). Also, he thought that that wasn't a blight at all (for some reason, Duncan never mentioned the Archdeamon), just another random darkspawn resurgence. He's, like, the worst of the bad guys - he's the one who believed he had the best intentions until the very end. But also an anti-villain, since he was a hero for the longest time.
@@masansr There is no false to what I said. "he did the correct thing he could do with the knowledge he had at that point." Read what I said again, slowly. Loghain literally planned on leaving from the very beginning, whether the fire was lit or not. He originally wants to send his own men, but after a mage says there isn't a point to the fire because the mages can send the signal alone without it, THEN says to send the Wardens. There literally is no "did the right thing" when he not only planned on abandoning the fight from the start, but is also the one who orchestrated the damn battle plan in the first place in order to get them killed lmao.
It makes sense for Celene to propose to the King of Ferelden. In Orlais, marriage is done just done out of politics and getting heirs. If you love someone in Orlais you just go out with them, being a mistress/lover is a common and accepted thing. It can even get you a position in court
Large amounts of enemies close together... Jon not even looking at all the bombs he has to throw at them that just sit in his inventory covered in dust. Least he spotted one trap.
For the reloads - you should save the game without sustained abilities active. They can sometimes corrupt the save file (in the vanilla 1.0 you HAD to save the game with sustained disabled, or the game wouldn't load at all).
pro tip: remember what mods you use with this DLC. had an outfit mod that required a nude mod as a base (annoying but common with outfit mods) forgot about it until I came across Cailen's corpse with his 'flag' at full mast while strung up on the totem. spat my drink all over the monitor at the comedy of it all as the game plays the sad music.
Shrieks aren't ghosts, they are just a less common type of darkspawn that are stealthy. Genlocks are corrupted dwarves, hurlocks are corrupted humans, ogres are corrupted qunari, and shrieks are corrupted elves. (Darkspawn do breed on their own, but the originals were corrupted from the "good" races.)
Wynn being an arcane warrior is hella OP, a dedicated healer who can take a punch is brilliant, stack that with Morrigan on top of a tank(Player warrior best bet for optimised build or Alistair/Shale(shale is a woman) for Jon) and a rogue for backstab/high damage (Leilana or Zevran, Player for Jon)
Generally it’s Andrastian tradition to burn your dead, partly in recognition of Andraste her self being burned, but also for practical reasons since it’s not uncommon for bored spirits to possess a corpse and go on a killing spree. I’m pretty sure Dwarves are the only ones who bury their dead since their immune from demon possession from having no connection to the fade.

gifts actually have depreciating returns and the first gift regardless of what it is will give you +5 if it generic/uncorrelated with a character and +10 if it is correlated with a character. The minimum returns are +1 and +6 with the same types of gifts. You have 4 gifts of each type to get additional boosts then you will always receive the minimums. Painting are not shale's favorites she's just never received a gift from you.
Jon, please remember to bring the dwarven made golem Shale in your party to the dwarf city!
Yes!
Jon you should be aware that there are 3 kinds of gifts:
A basic gift gives +5 approval *minus the amount of times you gave a gift to that person*
A thoughtful gift, ie finding the the right person who would like that gift, gives +10 with the same diminishing returns concept as before, down to a minimum of +6
And special gifts that give you some dialogue, those can only be given to the right person.
Jon, I would recommend you NOT sell all of your spare sexy heavy armor. You might use Sten again, after all. Correction, the game might force you to use Sten again, after all.
That Hurlock Vanguard you killed is the darkspawn you play as in the Darkspawn Chronicles
I could have sworn it was stated I believe on the fan Wiki that was a different one
@@aerialmacaroon6312 They're both Hurlock vanguards, they look the same, and since DC is non Canon, then again it doesn't really matter

Something of note in regard to the repeater gloves is that not all "rapid aim" items are created equal.
Best to just cast it yourself imo.
Seeing his denial about how to get companions quests; I can just imagine how he plays fire emblem and completely ignore the support conversations
Yeah for whatever reason that first gravestone is bugged and cannot be messed with until another one is messed with first. So when he went to it, he realized that there was nothing he could do, and he had no reason to assume that it had to be activated later
Jory got shanked, Daveth died of the taint
If you see some "grunt" darkspawn are just cannon fodder, they're usually just there to die easily to make you feel strong, or if they want to overwhelm you with numbers without making utterly unfair
Or even for atmosphere of how destructive and massive they can be
Week 23 of me yelling at Jon to stop manually controlling the healer whist complaining that the healer is dying begins now!
Protip, never unload loads of junk to bodahm. Sell it elsewhere as it vlogs up his inventory. Also buy your flasks and crafting needs elsewhere Bodahm is the most expensive merchant around.
Altstair is the only one he loses chance when landsmeet is finally ready so let’s hope he speaks to him before then
Jon please please talk more to your party. You haven't gotten a single companion quest or romance at all.
They won't just give you the quest like companions in Mass Effect. You need to dig into their dialogue trees until you can't ask them anything else
Or in Lily’s case, getting random encounter after talking enough with her
Same with Wynne, iirc. She gets a really powerful ability.

I don't know about anyone else but it so brightens my day when I see an update from Jon
"Does anyone know what a shriek is?"
... Ostagar really does make a bit more sense and ends up being a bit less spoilery if you do it after the dwarves. And can be incredibly interesting if you go there with an optional character you get much later.
Any gift that gives +6 or more means they like that item type
Should’ve brought Wynn and dog to Ostagar the rest of t the companions have nothing in regards to Ostagar
Dog also doesn't for human noble origin. The other origins meet the dog there but the human noble has had the dog for years.

Regarding the specialisations: a well known bug was that to get the reaver specialization, one could use the dragon blood on the ashes of Andraste, get the specialization, recover a save just before using the blood and still keep the specialization.
tldr: it's a bit broken
(and seemingly not wholly tied to the save)
That's not a bug lol specializations are account-wide so once you unlock it you have it on whatever save...
@@MrSTALKERCZ Some Achievements (in other games) can be unlocked this way as well.
I played this after the Landsmeet... And on that note, I'm glad you can switch between characters. It allows you to play around with classes and powers both for fun and just if you want to change loadouts the next time you play.
That is part of reason I prefer this series over mass effect, we get to control and experience our team instead of just giving commands
Hey Jon the Haste spell that Wynne uses constantly drains mana during combat, she will often have the ability get turned or be horribly out of mana. Stocking up on a huge supply of lyrium potions can really support Wynne.
if scattershot kills the target it doesn't hit any others for some reason
burials are not done by humans because of spirits and demon, elves have even said that it's one of the smarter things human do

I do like that Jon finds Morrigan essential, and Wynne inconvenient. Almost everyone that plays takes the healer everywhere, while leaving the evil swamp witch back at camp.
I found her essential as well. Never cared for Wynne much.
King Marrics blade is an item set with Calians shield btw
You are gonna love the gear from this one!
I remember this game was hard at first but as it went on you become so powerful that everything dies in a couple of hits. It looks like you're hitting that stage of the game.
I half expected, when the sloth demon showed up, for Jon to yell "The bear is still around"
Jon, keep feeding Shale gifts and having conversations. I can almost guarantee you'll enjoy the companion quest. I shall say no more.
So, if the king, the leader of the wardens and the uncle had died as planned...and he purposely sent you and Alistair to safety...Did the king WANT Alistair to be king? 😅
Good on them, force the best option to accept his fate by killing everyone in the line of succession, and commiting suicide in a legendary, glorious fashion....😂
I didn't know Alistair would mention to bring Wynne, I normally just bring her around
I find Jon often hear an opinion or makes up his own, and then just won't hear any other opinions. It makes him miss out on a lot, I think.
About Wynne, Jon you have to set her tactics! Tactics are so important in DAO. Use them. Also set the teams tactics to protect her. Shes a healer, hello! Also, she has a great mass paralyze spell if you level her up. She has a lot of great buffs and protection spells.
Every time only one person needs healing -> drop a bit of group healing.. :D
Its possible to reunlock specializations if you have a copy of the save before hand. It doesn't take too long to retrack if need be.

John, did you ever fiure out that you can right-click and hold the armor to access a description; telling you the set effect?
He did in an earlier episode. Buuuut that doesn't mean he remembers that.
The amazing thing about Cailan's armor is the super low stamina penalty (by heavy armor standards).
Thanks Jon!

There is an argument about whether Loghain could've saved Cailan, its unclear whether thats true or not
Yep, and that argument is referenced even as far along as DA:I, in universe its still debated even once the full truth comes out.
"he did the correct thing he could do with the knowledge he had at that point."
Read what I said again, slowly.
You didn't really meet that guy, he's just some guy they say you met
What is the point in having your companions like you if you NEVER TALK TO THEM JESUS CHRIST I-
It makes sense for Celene to propose to the King of Ferelden. In Orlais, marriage is done just done out of politics and getting heirs. If you love someone in Orlais you just go out with them, being a mistress/lover is a common and accepted thing. It can even get you a position in court

For the reloads - you should save the game without sustained abilities active. They can sometimes corrupt the save file (in the vanilla 1.0 you HAD to save the game with sustained disabled, or the game wouldn't load at all).
pro tip: remember what mods you use with this DLC.

If you want to romance Alistair, just do it before the landsmeet. Like now
Wynn being an arcane warrior is hella OP, a dedicated healer who can take a punch is brilliant, stack that with Morrigan on top of a tank(Player warrior best bet for optimised build or Alistair/Shale(shale is a woman) for Jon) and a rogue for backstab/high damage (Leilana or Zevran, Player for Jon)
There is nothing better than Starfang in the game till you get to late game Awakening
But annoyingly star fang is one of the items that is removed in the expansions so you can’t use it
Generally it’s Andrastian tradition to burn your dead, partly in recognition of Andraste her self being burned, but also for practical reasons since it’s not uncommon for bored spirits to possess a corpse and go on a killing spree. I’m pretty sure Dwarves are the only ones who bury their dead since their immune from demon possession from having no connection to the fade.
It's impressive that you can fit into Cailan's armour seeing as his entire chest was caved in... clearly you got Wade to uncrush the breastplate.
