She didn't stop singing, or dancing for two hours straight, and never missed one note or step. I might not jam her music, but I respect her talent level, and her commitment to being excellent every time she steps on stage.

I was in Seattle when she performed, it was 30-36 degrees. And me and my bestie were huddled together freezing and Beyonce was half dressed sliding through water for a majority of her show.

I watched Coachella and I just watched the documentary and when she performed Don’t Hurt yourself live and I heard the words of Malcolm X about black women being the most disrespected and most unprotected person in America I got real emotional. Like that really dug in deep. Especially when she did that beautiful transition.
Made me cry, and when she said she wanted everyone to feel represented, then I saw that lady on the drums I sure felt it. I’m not part of the Culture, I’m Eskimo, American Indian and French, but I’ve always felt like an outsider. Growing up in Alaska, it was my Samoan and Black friends that was always inclusive and now I think Beyoncé has somehow made that feeling I felt back then and shared it with everyone who really listens. If that makes any sense? I loved how she had some share their feelings, too. Like that lady who just had a baby. I really lost it when she shared a quote about mother’s and grandmothers hearing songs that haven’t been sung yet. Knowing what my ancestors went through, what all our ancestors went through, and it felt like magic. I hope I live to the day I get to see that Black women are supported and lifted up and treated with every respect and love as they deserve to be. That just hurt my soul.
I love how this documentary shows the GP how much work Beyonce puts in. Because a lot of people think Beyonce just shows up and looks pretty and performs. And that not the case what so ever. BEYONCE WRITES, PRODUCES, CHOREOGRAPHS everything thing. SHE MANAGES HERSELF. So there's no big production companies and/or creative directors it just her and her team. I love how she knows everything from the lighting, to the height of the stage, to the how many pearls are on the costumes especially since she's a woman and most people dont think a woman can be both a mom, a wife, and a very talented performer especially a black woman. This is why when folks call Beyonce "overrated" and put artists like Taylor Swift and fucking Cardi b next to her is insluting cause they dont go through half the shit Beyonce does! She deserves all the praises she gets!! 👐🏾👐🏾😊😊
Not to take anything away from Beyoncé, but she does have a team to help bring her visions to life. She has choreographers (JaQuel Knight and Chris Grant), a creative director (Todd Tourso), a stylist (Marni Senofonte) and her albums enlist the talents of many talented songwriters and producers. Beyoncé doesn't do every single thing herself. Nobody could. It takes a village, something that Beyoncé even says herself in Homecoming.

But I think Beyonce wanted us to understand that she has her hand in every pot and pan of her empire. Nothing goes anywhere without going through her. My boyfriend did security for her and Jay Z when they most recently came to Boston. It's true that she hides herself from the public. On her way backstage, she was wearing sweats with the hood up. She smiled at my BF right before she went onstage. I really appreciated you nerding out about this.

I'm not a beehive member but Beyonce played a big role in me learning to appreciate my blackness in its truest nature. I went to an HBCU and I learned so much about what it truly means to be black in America. Attending made me become the confident black woman that I am today because I grew up in a country where I was torn down by colourism. I grew to respect Beyonce and found a new love for her that I never had before, especially when she came out with her Lemonade album (specifically Formation). Seeing that representation when she started to showcase black empowerment more in her performances made me proud and made me more of a fan of her.
I love how private she is which is why this documentary was so interesting because she rarely shows/tells about her life. I think mysterious ppl are so much more interesting.
I love Beyoncé and I love the way #Homecoming made me feel. It reinforced my love for my people, my community, my culture. I was joyful seeing Black women highlighted in all shades and sizes looking gorgeous. I loved seeing how talented these Black folks are and reminding us of the importance of HBCU In our history and legacy. We built that as African Americans/Native Black folks. It was so wonderful.

I became a beyhive member after lemonade, I was just in awe. What an amazing WOMAN! She makes me feel so inspired and also so proud of being a black woman.
I started taking her seriously after she dropped the surprise album, just before lemonade. It was great, and the artist visuals per song were just gorgeous. Stunning. Was the first album I bought of hers. I was intrigued. But then.... here comes Lemonade.... and my appreciation for her and her vision/Love of The Culture was solidified. And I've been a huge admirer ever since.

She let us in on her truth. Seeing her practice for the first time after the twins was so amazing. It was raw and real! The talent was so no words too explain. The different body shapes and the creative aspects and hearing and seeing how proud they where too be there. I now am a Stan for Beyoncé. She gave up meat, dairy, carbs and alcohol 😭 that’s dedication. I’m so inspired. She did that. I was amazed. Brought so much nostalgic feelings.
Beyoncé is the only person I stan. It really broke my heart when she was talking about her body and her diet, I hate that in the music industry you look at a performer who's gonna need a lot of energy and think depriving them of that energy for some dumb weight loss reason is okay cause it's not! I hope she's getting lots of rest and eating, I'm glad she hides herself from the public and keeps her family and her mom side hidden too cause it's so tender and she's so loving with her children it makes me cry😭
I went to her Formation tour and it was definitely an experience. The choreo, the vocals, and the visuals were beyond CREATIVE GENIUS. She has worked her ass off to get where she is 🙌🏾
I was so stoked to see this video. Thank you so much for this. I saw the movie, listened to the album and I had THOUGHTS and FEELINGS, but I'm a just a middle-aged white lady who loves Beyonce and I feel like it's so not my lane to speak on it. That is not going to stop me from leaving an overlong comment on your insightful video essay. I absolutely loved the film. As much as I loved seeing the Beychella performance online last year, Homecoming made me feel like I was in the front row or on stage. I've seen her live and once and it was a terrific show and she honestly leaves it on the stage every night. She just raises the bar for every aspect. Like you said, she is an athlete. And I think everyone on the stage was an athlete. Playing in marching bands is really physically demanding (I carried drums in high school and it was so physically difficult that I would hurt for days afterward when I was 16 and in really great shape from doing distance running). I feel like we need to have more scholarships for dance, drumline, marching bands in college. These disciplines are every bit as important to "school spirit" and university culture as organized sports. I love that her whole concept celebrated these talents. It was evident that she had so much respect for people on stage with her. Re: the birth experience--I totally lost it at that part because I could relate to that, because after pregnancy my body was wrecked and I thought it would never be the same. It really, really hurt me though, seeing her starving herself while she was doing those super demanding rehearsals. I think she pushed herself too hard and it wasn't worth it to fit into an old costume. I mean I get WHY she did it that way. If she wouldn't have people would have been either commenting negatively about her body or saying, oh she's rich she just had plastic surgery. Still, it hurt to see her push herself to the point of collapse with dieting. I wish she would cut herself as much slack as she does her dancers who had all different shapes and body types. As a film, I think Homecoming is really amazing. She put the movie together so beautifully, with the songs being left whole and weaving into the behind the scenes footage. There are some very arty flourishes in the editing that I really appreciated. Spike Lee's School Daze is to Homecoming, what Daughters of the Dust is to Lemonade. Lee's film explored colorism, a necessary conversation to have, but like all his movies, he leaves it the viewer to decide and it can feel divisive (and indeed, this was one of the criticisms of the film at the time it came out). Beyonce chose to stress unity and diversity. She went out of her way to have a huge range of shades and shapes of people on stage with her. Like Lee, she loves a quotation, and opening with Nina Simone's words, and having the Malcolm X quote about black women being the most disrespected people in America solidified the whole message to be a celebration of black culture and in particular black female excellence. If Beyonce is the queen, then I would be honored to be one of her subjects.
Imagine that, being a black immigrant who didn’t go to a HBCU and it was very fun and educational to see all that richness presented so excellently that way. I wondered if I didn’t miss anything. Just that “Everybody mad” choreography makes my HIIT work out looks like a walk in the park.
Phonics. I love my people, but we love to ignore phonics. I know plenty of folks whose name is spelled one way and pronounced a whole other way. The y is simply there for aesthetics because it is the start of the next syllable in her name and has nothing to do with the "bee" sound. Whenever I see Bey written I have to fight all my educational instincts to pronounce it the correct way, lol.
At this point, people who have anything negative to say about Beyonće are just mad, and they are just going to have to stay that way. The way she puts 1000% of her everything she has into everything she does is more than admirable, and the way she is still humble and a good person makes me and other young black girls PROUD and want to work hard. Beychella was amazing!!! Hate on her if you want to, but just know that it won’t take you anywhere. Use that same hatin ass energy and put even a quarter of the effort that Beyoncé put in and create something in you life. She is a real BLACK women with real problems that still managed to make an extraordinary experience that will be forever remembered.
UmiMiami I agree, but she made a performance solely about historically Black collages and universities. She was trying to celebrate black culture and how dope it is (her quote not mine). I’m not saying that All women can’t appreciate it, they can, because it was an iconic performance. But I doubt they appreciate it the way black people who know and understand homecoming culture. We get so little to celebrate and she just came and raised our spirits with this BLACKITY BLACK ASS show.
Drunk in Love was also an homage to Michael Jackson. He would use a crane very similar to the one she used for his Beat It performances. Also used the music to Can You Feel it a Jackson’s song when she was saying thanks for being the 1st black woman at Coachella
I agree on all accounts! It was just reported that Ariana Grande was paid TWICE as much as Bey to headline this year’s Coachella. We ain’t never gonna win playing their game and this is another reason why I love Beyoncé. She doesn’t need their money or validation or stage. She did what she did with excellence, even if she wasn’t paid accordingly.
Beyonce was a million times better and deserved to be paid more, but I think those millions she didn’t get went to the budget of beychella. Ari’s performance was so much simpler and considerably cheaper.
Also she got paid by Netflix for this special so I'm sure the payoff is way more that Ariana got overall. Plus I think I read she negotiated for exclusive rights to her Coachella performance and the streaming rights.

I was a baby chile in the 90s, so I lacked the cultural awareness to appreciate the aesthetic and media/music at the time (black girl groups, UPN, etc), which I am low-key happy I missed because blatant misogyny was running rampant. But I feel SO lucky to see Bey in what may be her prime and to fully immerse myself into the experience of her. I can look back at this and know that the reactions folks are having to her are not performative! The reverence is REAL! Great video!
I love Beyonce, but I do think she has significant help with the black historical references, and the overall vision and theme of Black Excellence. Not to take anything away from her, but I think she has a team behind her (which she respects) to help launch and propel these ideas.

Yes. As a 70s/80s kid who saw both of these iconic performers. This project is surely on the level of entertainment in terms of creativity, quality of musicianship, energy, and artistry. These artists are very different and show their genius in different ways. However, the feeling of witnessing something special in the moment, is what this level artists bring to fans.
And she was still humble or she might have been throwin shade. "If my country ass can do it, they can." Nope. They are incapable of such excellence. It is what it is.
I was an HBCU freshman when Beychella came on. I remember staying up in my dorm lounge in the middle of the night by myself and being moved to tears with all the black ass songs, the Greek-letters, the dances, all of it. I was so fucking happy I didn’t let people keep me from choosing my HBCU. I’m so thankful
Beyonce is the only person in pop artistically that will ever get to the level of Michael Jackson. Her work ethic is similar to what his was - detailed, perfectionist, caring about the message, innovative, celebrating black culture. I never thought I'd say there was someone equal to MJ. And I've been a Beyonce fan since the first Destiny's Child release. (And by the way, I also don't consider myself Beyhive, I don't understand what makes you Beyhive... I chose her as my rolemodel in school before most this Beyhive was even writing full sentences.)

I got emotional too. I'm from Jamaica and I have lots of family members who went to HBCU's. Not going to one is my biggest regret. That little Jamaican section was really great. I know there's a lot of fighting going on between black people but the diaspora is so beautiful.

Keep your grades up, aim high but do not over work yourself. Try to get into AP classes and during junior and senior year take college course if it’s offered and you keep your head up.

Great review! Excellence makes me emotional as well. Wow. This documentary showed the world exactly why Beyonce is on a level like no other. Her longevity and body of work is clearly born out of a God-given gift that she has nurtured continuously. And the love she has for HBCUs is illustriously illustrated in this documentary. The concert itself was PHENOMENAL! THE BAND AND DANCERS WERE 🔥🔥🔥 I was in band myself and watching them bought back so many memories. It's hard enough to play and march, but to DANCE in risers two hours straight? Props to those brothas and sistas for doing the dang thing. Every single move was synchronized and flawless. I was moved to tears a few times, as well as awestruck. That drumline? The horns? Destiny's Child? "Deja Vu"? "Before I Let Go"? Man. The quotes from Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, and other black historical figures were well placed. Loved the featuring of the stepping and line skits. The behind the scenes footage with her kids and her rehearsals was so informative. This is a must see. The audience was as big a part of the show as the performance itself. ♥️♥️♥️
I really loved beychella. I loved that we got insight into how she created all of this. But I think my absolute favorite thing was that she included the crowds reaction. But specifically it was the black audience attendees. And seeing all of that joy just made me feel good and smile along with them. Beyonce is so important and this performance will forever be apart of history.

UmiMiami Sure, there is no doubt that her music is empowering women around the world and women of all shades adore her. That said, many of her songs and visual albums as well as this performance celebrate Black culture and Black women and there is nothing wrong with that.

I watched Coachella and I just watched the documentary and when she performed Don’t Hurt yourself live and I heard the words of Malcolm X about black women being the most disrespected and most unprotected person in America I got real emotional. Like that really dug in deep. Especially when she did that beautiful transition.

Made me cry, and when she said she wanted everyone to feel represented, then I saw that lady on the drums I sure felt it. I’m not part of the Culture, I’m Eskimo, American Indian and French, but I’ve always felt like an outsider. Growing up in Alaska, it was my Samoan and Black friends that was always inclusive and now I think Beyoncé has somehow made that feeling I felt back then and shared it with everyone who really listens. If that makes any sense? I loved how she had some share their feelings, too. Like that lady who just had a baby.
I really lost it when she shared a quote about mother’s and grandmothers hearing songs that haven’t been sung yet. Knowing what my ancestors went through, what all our ancestors went through, and it felt like magic.
I hope I live to the day I get to see that Black women are supported and lifted up and treated with every respect and love as they deserve to be. That just hurt my soul.

I love how this documentary shows the GP how much work Beyonce puts in. Because a lot of people think Beyonce just shows up and looks pretty and performs. And that not the case what so ever. BEYONCE WRITES, PRODUCES, CHOREOGRAPHS everything thing. SHE MANAGES HERSELF. So there's no big production companies and/or creative directors it just her and her team. I love how she knows everything from the lighting, to the height of the stage, to the how many pearls are on the costumes especially since she's a woman and most people dont think a woman can be both a mom, a wife, and a very talented performer especially a black woman.

Not to take anything away from Beyoncé, but she does have a team to help bring her visions to life. She has choreographers (JaQuel Knight and Chris Grant), a creative director (Todd Tourso), a stylist (Marni Senofonte) and her albums enlist the talents of many talented songwriters and producers.
Beyoncé doesn't do every single thing herself. Nobody could. It takes a village, something that Beyoncé even says herself in Homecoming.

I'm not a beehive member but Beyonce played a big role in me learning to appreciate my blackness in its truest nature. I went to an HBCU and I learned so much about what it truly means to be black in America. Attending made me become the confident black woman that I am today because I grew up in a country where I was torn down by colourism. I grew to respect Beyonce and found a new love for her that I never had before, especially when she came out with her Lemonade album (specifically Formation). Seeing that representation when she started to showcase black empowerment more in her performances made me proud and made me more of a fan of her.
I love how private she is which is why this documentary was so interesting because she rarely shows/tells about her life. I think mysterious ppl are so much more interesting.

I love Beyoncé and I love the way #Homecoming made me feel. It reinforced my love for my people, my community, my culture. I was joyful seeing Black women highlighted in all shades and sizes looking gorgeous. I loved seeing how talented these Black folks are and reminding us of the importance of HBCU In our history and legacy. We built that as African Americans/Native Black folks. It was so wonderful.

I became a beyhive member after lemonade, I was just in awe. What an amazing WOMAN! She makes me feel so inspired and also so proud of being a black woman.
I started taking her seriously after she dropped the surprise album, just before lemonade. It was great, and the artist visuals per song were just gorgeous. Stunning. Was the first album I bought of hers. I was intrigued. But then.... here comes Lemonade.... and my appreciation for her and her vision/Love of The Culture was solidified. And I've been a huge admirer ever since.

She let us in on her truth. Seeing her practice for the first time after the twins was so amazing. It was raw and real! The talent was so no words too explain. The different body shapes and the creative aspects and hearing and seeing how proud they where too be there. I now am a Stan for Beyoncé. She gave up meat, dairy, carbs and alcohol 😭 that’s dedication. I’m so inspired. She did that. I was amazed. Brought so much nostalgic feelings.

I was so stoked to see this video. Thank you so much for this. I saw the movie, listened to the album and I had THOUGHTS and FEELINGS, but I'm a just a middle-aged white lady who loves Beyonce and I feel like it's so not my lane to speak on it. That is not going to stop me from leaving an overlong comment on your insightful video essay. I absolutely loved the film. As much as I loved seeing the Beychella performance online last year, Homecoming made me feel like I was in the front row or on stage. I've seen her live and once and it was a terrific show and she honestly leaves it on the stage every night. She just raises the bar for every aspect. Like you said, she is an athlete. And I think everyone on the stage was an athlete. Playing in marching bands is really physically demanding (I carried drums in high school and it was so physically difficult that I would hurt for days afterward when I was 16 and in really great shape from doing distance running). I feel like we need to have more scholarships for dance, drumline, marching bands in college. These disciplines are every bit as important to "school spirit" and university culture as organized sports. I love that her whole concept celebrated these talents. It was evident that she had so much respect for people on stage with her. Re: the birth experience--I totally lost it at that part because I could relate to that, because after pregnancy my body was wrecked and I thought it would never be the same. It really, really hurt me though, seeing her starving herself while she was doing those super demanding rehearsals. I think she pushed herself too hard and it wasn't worth it to fit into an old costume. I mean I get WHY she did it that way. If she wouldn't have people would have been either commenting negatively about her body or saying, oh she's rich she just had plastic surgery. Still, it hurt to see her push herself to the point of collapse with dieting. I wish she would cut herself as much slack as she does her dancers who had all different shapes and body types. As a film, I think Homecoming is really amazing. She put the movie together so beautifully, with the songs being left whole and weaving into the behind the scenes footage. There are some very arty flourishes in the editing that I really appreciated. Spike Lee's School Daze is to Homecoming, what Daughters of the Dust is to Lemonade. Lee's film explored colorism, a necessary conversation to have, but like all his movies, he leaves it the viewer to decide and it can feel divisive (and indeed, this was one of the criticisms of the film at the time it came out). Beyonce chose to stress unity and diversity. She went out of her way to have a huge range of shades and shapes of people on stage with her. Like Lee, she loves a quotation, and opening with Nina Simone's words, and having the Malcolm X quote about black women being the most disrespected people in America solidified the whole message to be a celebration of black culture and in particular black female excellence. If Beyonce is the queen, then I would be honored to be one of her subjects.

At this point, people who have anything negative to say about Beyonće are just mad, and they are just going to have to stay that way. The way she puts 1000% of her everything she has into everything she does is more than admirable, and the way she is still humble and a good person makes me and other young black girls PROUD and want to work hard. Beychella was amazing!!! Hate on her if you want to, but just know that it won’t take you anywhere. Use that same hatin ass energy and put even a quarter of the effort that Beyoncé put in and create something in you life. UmiMiami I agree, but she made a performance solely about historically Black collages and universities. She was trying to celebrate black culture and how dope it is (her quote not mine). I’m not saying that All women can’t appreciate it, they can, because it was an iconic performance. But I doubt they appreciate it the way black people who know and understand homecoming culture. We get so little to celebrate and she just came and raised our spirits with this BLACKITY BLACK ASS show.

We ain’t never gonna win playing their game and this is another reason why I love Beyoncé. She doesn’t need their money or validation or stage. She did what she did with excellence, even if she wasn’t paid accordingly.
Beyonce was a million times better and deserved to be paid more, but I think those millions she didn’t get went to the budget of beychella. Ari’s performance was so much simpler and considerably cheaper.

I was a baby chile in the 90s, so I lacked the cultural awareness to appreciate the aesthetic and media/music at the time (black girl groups, UPN, etc), which I am low-key happy I missed because blatant misogyny was running rampant. But I feel SO lucky to see Bey in what may be her prime and to fully immerse myself into the experience of her. I watched Beychella an embarrassing number of times since the premier. My daughter asks for it by name is every weekend.
And she was still humble or she might have been throwin shade. "If my country ass can do it, they can." Nope. They are incapable of such excellence. It is what it is.
I was an HBCU freshman when Beychella came on. I remember staying up in my dorm lounge in the middle of the night by myself and being moved to tears with all the black ass songs, the Greek-letters, the dances, all of it. I was so fucking happy I didn’t let people keep me from choosing my HBCU. I’m so thankful
Beyonce is the only person in pop artistically that will ever get to the level of Michael Jackson. Her work ethic is similar to what his was - detailed, perfectionist, caring about the message, innovative, celebrating black culture. I never thought I'd say there was someone equal to MJ. And I've been a Beyonce fan since the first Destiny's Child release. (And by the way, I also don't consider myself Beyhive, I don't understand what makes you Beyhive... I got emotional too. I'm from Jamaica and I have lots of family members who went to HBCU's. Not going to one is my biggest regret. That little Jamaican section was really great. I know there's a lot of fighting going on between black people but the diaspora is so beautiful.

Wow. This documentary showed the world exactly why Beyonce is on a level like no other. Her longevity and body of work is clearly born out of a God-given gift that she has nurtured continuously. And the love she has for HBCUs is illustriously illustrated in this documentary.
The concert itself was PHENOMENAL! THE BAND AND DANCERS WERE 🔥🔥🔥 I was in band myself and watching them bought back so many memories. It's hard enough to play and march, but to DANCE in risers two hours straight? Props to those brothas and sistas for doing the dang thing. Every single move was synchronized and flawless.
I was moved to tears a few times, as well as awestruck. That drumline? The horns? Destiny's Child? "Deja Vu"? "Before I Let Go"? Man. The quotes from Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, and other black historical figures were well placed. Loved the featuring of the stepping and line skits. The behind the scenes footage with her kids and her rehearsals was so informative.
This is a must see. The audience was as big a part of the show as the performance itself. ♥️♥️♥️
I really loved beychella. I loved that we got insight into how she created all of this. But I think my absolute favorite thing was that she included the crowds reaction. But specifically it was the black audience attendees. And seeing all of that joy just made me feel good and smile along with them. Beyonce is so important and this performance will forever be apart of history.
bbygurljess19 100% agreed! It was so beautiful to see the pure joy on their faces :-) I was so tickled by the black men singing along to the songs that center black women.
UmiMiami Sure, there is no doubt that her music is empowering women around the world and women of all shades adore her. That said, many of her songs and visual albums as well as this performance celebrate Black culture and Black women and there is nothing wrong with that.
Watched it a couple of nights ago cos there was nothing else on. I'm not a fan but DAYUM!! I have the utmost respect for her griiiiind! Her work ethic is off the charts. The whole HBCU theme...LOVED IT!! I can't think of anybody out here now who can touch this woman!
I got emotional watching this. I watch bey chella ALL THE TIME. Listen to it often. I graduated in 2004 from hs so i was full force dc3. They were my first concert. I love her. Good job girl. 💖
I want to point out that the music playing in the beginning as she was walking was the way it ended on a high note! She is so dynamic!
