  • Paris Opera House Tour
The Paris Opera House, more formally The Palais Garnier, has been called "probably the most famous opera house in the world". It's a masterpiece that was the most expensive building constructed in Paris during the Second Empire (Napoleon III's reign), but it's also the setting for Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera.
This quick tour will take you through the main lobby, and explore the incredible building for all of it's opulence. We'll get a sneak peak into the 1,979 seat Auditorium and it's famous seven-ton bronze and crystal chandelier, hung under the ceiling painted by Marc Chagall in 1964. Though the chandelier has never fallen, on 20 May 1896, one of the chandelier's counterweights broke free and burst through the ceiling into the auditorium, killing a concierge - inspiring one of the more famous scenes in The Phantom of the Opera.
The building features a large marble staircase surrounded by balconies, allowing guests to see and be seen by all in attendance. Climbing the stairs, you're led to the Salon du Soleil (Salon of the Sun) and the Salon de la Lune (Salon of the Moon). They were designed as the entrance vestibules for the smoking room and the Galerie du Glacier.
The final stop on the tour is also its most magnificent: The Grand Foyer. This hall was designed to act as a drawing room for Paris society. It measures 18 metres (59 ft) high, 54 metres (177 ft) long and 13 metres (43 ft) wide, and contains a ceiling was painted by Paul-Jacques-Aimé Baudry to represent various moments in the history of music.
The Paris Opera House was built from 1861 to 1875 at the request of Emperor Napoleon III, and designed by architect Charles Garnier. The theatre has been a monument historique of France since 1923.
