Setting your own hours as a farmer sounds great when you hear it. But coming from a family of farmers, I can assure you, they had to be up by 4:00 a.m. everyday...7 days a week!
If you call all your hours setting your own hours lol
Sorry would have replied a year ago but I was farming.
My kid’s high school has a class called “transitions” & skills like banking and saving are taught in that class. It’s basically meant to fill gaps in the education system and help kids learn skills needed as adults.
This was brilliant! This is why I homeschooled my son from kindergarten on,giving him time to dive into his passions of cybersecurity and the music industry and data, things that no middle school or high school taught.
He’s now a senior in College and he has been offered a job in cyber security for a global firm! And, He goes to so many concerts and plans to have a side hustle in something to do with the music industry.
Not the perfect parent or the perfect son… But this is the perfect RUclips video for encouraging and inspiring others to think outside the box. Especially when the box is a system that is failing our kids. Thank you so much!

This really crystallised some things that I've been reflecting on over the last few weeks - that the values instilled in school don't lead to financial freedom, and the social norms of our culture ('Nice to meet you. So, what do you do?') reinforce societal values of work-as-identity. Great food for thought as always, Gabe.
The government isn't all bad. They help me be independent even though I'm disabled.
And it's not that we can't. It's about priorities.
Yes. My dad grew up with farming parents and a one room school.
It all boils down to the one word: 'Mindset'. Once we imprint on certain ways of thinking (especially in our early years), they become our default programs...and all future efforts to change them are exceedingly difficult. We often do not even have any idea that they are controlling us.
Your Intro was GREAT!! LOL! You can tell how much work you put into your craft! I always get something out of your vids. School (to some degree) doesn't give us the LIFE advice we need, or it leads us down the wrong path with misguided info.
We truly do live by a "Structured Life" based off of society, media and what we learn at a young age.

Instead of saying that you brainwashed yourself to think more about being smarter with finances, I think it's better to say that you rewired or reprogrammed your mindset. "Brainwashing" yourself has a negative connotation and might paint the wrong image for a split second. I'm not sure if that was intentional, but just something I noticed.
This is why I home educate my daughter and teach her about the stock market. The education system is such a terrible mess
I find it interesting that you think farmers don’t have structured lives. To survive they are extremely hard workers with long, hard hours.

I have to say though after having some tragic losses one after another and ending up in this bubble space of one for a while, being financially stable was a great blessing. I would not have been able to crawl out of that bubble and attempt to connect with anyone if I didn’t have, at least, that stability to not worry about also.
You could have no one and be in a financial mess at the same time
You will get old. You will need a surplus for when you cannot work. As you age it's hard to find a good pay job. Save now so you can be secure later. Be not deceived
@@kate60 and…as you age, there is loss. People pass, children move on, and it’s so much harder to have that “social” support around you daily. I would argue that having finances in a good place is even more important as that social circle gets smaller and smaller and may, at times, disappear altogether. Strength is needed at this time and not having to waste stress on serious financial issues is crucial.
What about the corrupt nursing homes that take all your life savings?

This is truly relevant and a great way to ponder things. What we see in our society these days is that almost every person easily jumps on the bandwagon and conforms to what is on the trend. We have forgotten to exercise our individualistic thoughts. Excellent content, Gabe!

Really good video, I always struggled with 'the system ' and I use to work really hard but it didn't really get me anywhere and my colleagues were obsessed with overtime but I tried to explain that this is your time. Since then I've become fairly free, I basically work 1 day a week but not hard work and I've got much more money and time...work for yourself and be smart with your money.

It may be all mostly true but a bit of a fantasy about subsistence farming. You can still go to many countries and see that that life is hard.

Most people before the industrial revolution were very poor and had no means at all going from day job to day job and living were ever they could find shelter or living in horrible quaters at the big estates working endless hours. The small independent farmers were often starving and it was way harder than we can imagin! It was not better for humans! But nature thrived in those days. I love all your content but to romanticize old days is not good! Making people aware and independent thinkers is great! 👌

@@LDM805 No nothing with that. I think he is spot on! Schools started so that kids would learn how to be obedient, trusty workers. Just the way he made it sound with the farmers life.
@@evalindell2757Actually small farmers have it pretty good. Not sure if you’ve ever met Amish people but there’s a large Amish community where I live and they’re chillin just enjoying life. Happiest people I know.
@@liamthompson7155 Today we have a totally different society so lots of farmers are doing very well indeed. Lived with Amish around us as a teen so I have seen them too. But we KNOW from list when first world war started in Europe that the majorety of farmers and people working at the big houses were in poor condition. So much so that they could not enlist and fight. The goverments in several counties were talking about this after the war as it was dangerous to not have enough soldiers or young men that could become soldiers. Someone had to be able to defend the land. I am NOT talking about recent years. A hundred years ago or more. Then it was like it is today in certain developing countries, really tuff!

Love your channel, but this topic applies to probably less than 1% of us. farm-centered america is gone, so we can LEAVE the factory, but still cant go back. You, and i, and the other commenters/subscribers can start our own business or channel or venture, but we cant ALL do that. there are only so many topics and businesses to start before we need (factory) workers to answer our emails, clean our toilets, or do the other minute/routine tasks that are not in any way free.
at that point need (again) the (factory) workers to show up on OUR time, do what WE tell them to do, and live a life that's more profitable to us than it is to them. IF we make it less profitable, then we'll not be able to afford more (youtube camera) equipment, workspaces, or even more employees. i think everyone wants nice things and a nice life, but not everyone will get it. Realistically (some people are just born faster, stronger, smarter, more perseverant) AND statistically (the top 10% will ALWAYS be only 1 out of every 10 people, NEVER everyone).
Yes the school has just recently changed. They now stress on Gender and LGBT's B.s. That's the new way 😅
