Wonderful voices, beautiful production, magnificent mise en scéne, although nobody can tell where .-I mean the theater- and when this most egregious production was carried out.

This is from 2018. I think the actual date is March 22, 2018. I'll put it in the description. It's from the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Germany.

No wonder Verdi didn't want to do the ballet. Have we checked to see if he actually has rolled in his grave, after this?

@@opera.english.subtitles As an amateur ballerina, I can tell you that modern ballet does look the way presented around the 2:21:00 mark. It can be jerky, stiff, funky, and intentionally ugly in its choreography, costumes, music, and concepts. I'm a bit old-fashioned in that I mostly prefer to watch classical ballets of the Romantic era, and modern ballets with choreography based on that school of ballet, with their grace, fluidity, and beauty. That's the kind I learned, dance, and like watching. I like some Balanchine and MacMillan, but their modernity was from the mid-20th century, which isn't as anti-classical as 21st-century movement. The ballet here is not pleasant to my eyes or ears, but it fits neatly into the modern concept. Do you know the year?

I wish someone did a bilingual production of this opera. Italians sing in Italian, French sing in French, the main characters switch as the situation calls for it. Would be a bit hard to learn but it would be fun.

    • @opera.english.subtitles

@@gaddovarzi6980 At least Caimi has a nice agility for some of those tricky passages. I have a video of Rigoletto where I think it is Caimi singing the Duke, but I didn't bother with it too much, because although Caimi was quite enjoyable, the Rigoletto had no top whatsoever, so I became frustrated with it and quit watching it.

Ruined by infantile staging and dressing the singers up in halloween costumes. An insult to Verdi and opera in general. Why do the singers put up with it?
