I downloaded this two years ago and still love it. This was a fantastic production and the soloists are very, very good. I've seen a few La Traviata's and other operas that have been modernized and I think to myself, how awful. What a way to destroy opera. This is the way it should be done. Verdi would have been very proud. Thank you so much for having uploaded this wonderful production.
Thank you so much for the High Quality Video with ENG. subtitles. All the actors and actresses were fantastic!!!! Thanks a lot!!!! from Seoul, Korea. 감사합니다!!!!!!
Watching La Traviata since 60 years , I went to Vienne to watch my first operas.... La TRAVIATA AND LA BOHEME ... SINCE , WATCHING ONLY OPERAS ..,, been traveling around the world to China, Casablanca , France, England , etc,,,, Opera is my world ...
Devotion and Emotion are the two main poles of this lovely performance. It touched me, indeed !! Mrs Bromagen's voice is the ideal one for this multilateral role-symbol both, musically and theatrically. Her final vocal fall, followed by her fall on stage, are and will remain unique examples of great art !!!

Thank you. I have listened to this performance twice this afternoon and was deeply moved by Maestro Kahn's phrasing and clarity. I found that La Traviata is a particularly hard opera to interpret as it has been performed countless times. Unfortunately, many were lousy -- without absolute seriousness and careful attention to detail, the beautiful melody could be super bland. I have seen so many great performances in the past, and I hear something new from this production. Thank you Maestro for putting them together. I treasure this production as one of my favorites.
Hey, don’t remove it on my account! I’m very thankful for your appreciation (maestro Crawford here), and would love to see it stay. Or you could repost with the correct information (🤓).
The prelude to 'La Traviata' just has to be one of the most perfectly appropriate operatic preludes ever written. The tragedy and pathos of the story just ooze from every note - a masterpiece, Mr. Verdi!
Having performed Germont, I can genuinely say the audience doesn't have a clue as to how much hard work and thousands of hours of prep is required to perform this masterpiece.....
Always admire how modern opera singers act on the stage: costumes, gesters, movement, emotions. As if the MAIN THING, singing difficult music, breathing, costs no effort!
Where was your production staged? What year? How many performances that season did you perform? I watched a documentary about opera singers at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and it did look tough. I grew up going to a small time production opera house in Union City, NJ. Sadly, it's defunct. I was a good and quiet 5 year old so my Mother and her friends took me frequently to all the operas there. I was thrilled with the music, stories, and singing. I also found out that the singers didn't actually die but played dead. That was really confusing for a while in my kid's brain how someone could die one minute and then show up for a curtain call to take a bow. I still love opera and heavy metal now that I'm 50. Hey, you can like both. One does and can influence the other on occasion.
I am the audience, and I know how much work is put into these productions, my niece is in theater, even when I do a presentation (cause I'm stage fright 😱) I have to practice and practice till I 🙃. So like anything like pro sports, pro cooking, actors in a movie 🎬, it's all hard work. It's the performer that make it look to easy.

A wonderful production, splendid singers musicians, dancers. Great enjoyment, to one who can no longer easily get to any of the great venues. PS, non of the many "Gods" invoked seem effective... 😞
All effort was put into the music, which yes the orchestra is grand, and yes the singing is splendid; however, no thought was put in to the costumes. Each gown has different hemline, different sleeves, different collar, necklace, head dress, hat, hoops etc. Which means each gown can't have been worn at the same party because they all would have come from different time periods.
The Germont is well cast. The tenor wooly very not terribly clear in vowels yet elegant looking and with an Edwardian style. The soprano has a straightforward voice with a horsey warble quality at the the top. Her technique is more German versus Italianate with many of the phrases obscured and the line rather covered and dropped down in the mouth. With her Alfredo sound more like Alfriiihhhdaww etc. What she has is volume a sense of florid abandon and a secure upper middle register and an affecting pathos. Verdi require a very clear firm line with volume and a anguish. The conducting is tight if not terribly nuanced. In this version Papa Germont dominates the energy with Violetta being a victim and clearly doomed, the son being clueless which is another way to to go.
