Many old time country tunes are modal, and when you play them, or even listen to them, they can put you into a trance. At least they tend to work for me. Lots of jazz is modal, too. Well, listen to R.L. above. He played some of the best modal-type blues around. I was fortunate to see him play live, and let me tell you, the chord changes and the groove (not easy drumming, by the way!) can send you into the outer limits. Great, great stuff.
I met him at a blues festival in Annapolis,Md. and he was very gracious and more than willing to talk to me. Talked to him about the blues for a good 30 minutes. Very nice man. Also met his son, DuWayne after a gig in Lancaster, Pa. He was with North Miss. Allstars at the time. Also a very nice guy. Drank beers, talked to him for over an hour after the show.
I gave R.L. the baseball cap he is wearing in this video. He gave me one of his. I had it made at a mall in Tempe,AZ. I gave it to him at a bar in Royal Oak, MI.
@ottlakerambler: True, and people from R.L.'s area refer to it as, "North Mississippi Hill Country Blues" or "Hill Country Blues". This is excellent. I just seen Cedric Burnside at the 2011 Juke Joint Fest in Clarksdale, Miss..
That's some badass shit! Im a heavy metal fan to the bone, but I love the old classic rock too, so that means automatically I like the blues too. But I don't care much for the mainstreamers like BB King, whos great by the way, but I like going back to the purest forms if Im gonna listen to the blues, like Muddy Waters,T-Model Ford, Tommy Johnson, Robert Johnson, Junior Kimbrough, and of course RL Burnside who was absolutely the man! This is the true Mississippi Delta GRIT
@teleevangelist Too hard to describe here -- it's a question of music theory. But anyway, modal tunes often sound like they have a hypnotic quality to them.
R.L. Burnside is a blues Hero ;) Cool and groovy slide guitar !! Keep the blues alive :) !
