With the big spread in the fleet, I think the next VG race should be 2 divisions - foilers and non-foilers. Keep the non-foilers as a less costly alternative and an entry possibility for new competitors.
ANOTHER STELLAR SHOW, YOUR BRILLIANT ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THIS SPORT IS TRULY AWESOME. THANKS FOR THE EFFORT YOU PUT IN TO MAKE THIS CONTENT POSSIBLE. MERRY CHRISTMAS FOR THIS LAKE SAILOR IN GEORGIA USA!
Thank you so much again, Florian. This show again was stuffed with insights that add a new quality in following this race as a non-expert. You really have the potential to open this event to a much broader audience which may be benefitial for the entire Vendee and its stakeholders.
Excellent show Florian, thanks a lot for the great Q&A and answering the sleep question. Great respect to the skippers keeping it going as they do under the relentless southern conditions. Wishing them all a safe turn around the horn and home stretch and Best wishes to you All…
Listening to Boris‘ channel, it seems he did not fully capsize 360 degrees, luckily. Rather, he got stuck (nosedive) in a wave and turned trough the wind (having no rudder control) leaving him with the sail (and the kiel) on the wrong side which pushed him hard into the water.
on carbon boats , here in NZ we have a john spencer designed two man dingy, 14 ft long, called a javelin , the newest boats are carbon ,foam ,as opposed to last gen which are S glass and foam . sailing in really light winds one day I realized you can hear the shrimps crackling away . You can't on the S glass boats . Made me realize just how good of a sound transmitter carbon is , when you see the differences in cost ,and actual over all strengths of S glass vs Carbon ,I would probably actually favor S glass .
Ciao Wolves, I think King Jean „ClackClackClack“ is not a Habit he established, as I know it actually is the „voice-command“ to control-switch the Camera back and forward direction. Cheers and delightful christmas to all from Switzerland
Wow, that's a great thought, and sounds very likely. Perhaps Florien could ask him. Merry Christmas to Everyone and safe sailing to all the competitors
For the next q&a: sailing with the keel almost parallel with the sea surface for maximum righting moment means that it is doing nothing to stop the boat drifting to leeward. Non foilers seem to have dagger boards each side but foilers don't. Does this mean that the foils help to prevent leeward drift (even through they are also effectively horizontal) or do skippers just point the boats further up wind to counteract the lateral drift. What happens when they are close hauled? Do they drop the keel to a more vertical position?
How are the boats protected if they capsize, it looks like they are more or less open at the rear with just fabric walls and access doors, what stops vast amounts of water getting in and sloshing all over all the electrical equipment as it rolls back over? Loving the channel by the way.
Pip also talked about having to cut all of the ropes and rigging held within the mast. Its not just the massive carbon fiber mast, it would be re-running all of the lines, mounting... Maybe its more modular than my neophyte mind understands, but this feels more like a rebuild than a repair
Excellent episode as always! Thanks, Florian for your explanation of the autopilot system and the calculations it makes to optimize performance. Obviously due to the need to sleep no human could ever match the autopilot in a single-handed scenario, but can, say, 6 humans taking 4 hour shifts do as well or potentially better than the computer in a 24-hour period? Are Vendée Globe style autopilots used at all in the Ocean Race?
Question for next week: if they foresails are self furling, why don’t they use that for reefing as on pleasure boats? Especially on a solo sail it seems a ton of work to change between j1,j2, and j3. I get why the asymmetrical sails would not work that way.
Pip won't be able to continue the race, as the rules are clear that they have to race single handed around the world without assistance (hence the skippers who have been at anchor to make their own repairs & can't even accept food from locals). On her "Slow boat to Melbourne" channel Pip said that she has her old mast (new mast fitted for the Vendée New-York ?), so she'll probably use that to sail back to her base (It's cheaper to ship the mast over to Melbourne than to ship her yacht to Europe).
The sleep deficit may result in sub optimal decision making resulting in poor choices for performance and/or safety. Let’s hope all sailors get home safely
I think the question is whether he thinks the dual class will be in the next edition - or if gen 3 foilers will be so farther advanced that supporting the race that could be even more spread out than this one is something the organizers want to manage. I think there will be a place for more traditional monohull still, but the gap between the classes will grow.
As a casual observer I think that Jean Le Cam’s new boat may be the last non foiler ever built. I am sure we will see non foiler entries in future VendeeGlobes but I believe these will be older boats. If skippers are serious about a high placing in future they will need to be evolutions of Yoanne or Charlie’s designs.
Meine Tasse steckt in der Schweiz fest und ist leider 😢 nicht rechtzeitig zu Weihnachten angekommen. Wieso? Ich habe am 16.12. bestellt um pünktlich zu Weihnachten mit euch anzustoßen. Schade.
Merry Christmas Seawolves :)

I toast every time I watch, most of the time it's just you and I in that moment, because I am watching these video at a later time.

Agree with this comment, if i understand Boris comment it was a horizontal pirouette and not a vertical one
That’s fortunate!
Wow just hearing about this, is he ok? The boat?
We called it “pitch poling” on our Hobie cats.
Great show, fascinating insights into the tech. Have a very happy Christmas 🏆✔️
A most excellent report!
Thanks Florian.
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas from Nashville! Even on vacation, I never miss an episode. Thanks for all you do, Florian! ❤
I do look forward to the toast, sometimes coffee sometimes beer, Cheers Wolves !!
Wish you all a merry Christmas 🌲🫶

Christmas Morning here

Conrad's chair looks like wings👍
Merry Christmas from Oregon USA.! What a record race we’re seeing because of you. Thanks so much and have enjoyed our morning toast🥂✌️🍀

Frohe Weihnachten SeaWolves
Are there any penalties for crossing over into the ice exclusion zone?
Great show thanks for your knowledge 👍 Merry Christmas 🎄
Joyeux Noël to all...🎄🎅🎄

Boris did not capsize fully. To my understanding it was more a knockdown due to backwinding the sails.
I used a single slalom water ski that when pushed to its limit would sing with the side fin. Then it was very touchy and could cut out .abruptly..
Isn't that whining sound is from the rigging and tensioned lines? It's always whining in the marina when lines are tensioned
different whine

Do you think there will be any non-foiling boats in the next Vendee?
There are non-foyers in this event. They have two different classes the ones with and the ones without.

like 4wd did to car rally....must have foils
What and when happened to Malizia?
Yeah, I didn't see anything on borris' channel about this??
I believe it was due to a nosedive, see my comment in this channel
