I refuse to buy things with logos on them. Why PAY to advertise for a company? Hey if they give the merch with a logo away, I’ll consider it!

    •  2 года назад +7

Agree, and I always add: If they want me to be a living advertisement, they should pay me, instead of me paying for a garment with a logo. I don't like to be used as an advertisement, much less pay for it. I don't even like to walk around with the bag of a shop with the logo in it, I see it as free advertisement too.

@@MayTheSchwartzBeWithYou Of course, but in the case of my phone and keyboard, you don't see the logo at all, and about my sport shoes, I try to buy the ones that have a less visible logo, but in this case it's quite hard to buy sth that nobody recognizes, for the rest, I buy things without logos. Anyway, I'm not going around with my computer or my monitor! So, I'm not making an advertisement for it. And I own a camera too, I just put a black sticku tape on the logo and changed the strap (which also has the logo in it) for a neutral one... I also unstitch the labels on my clothes and any small label that could be somewhere on the outside part. I take this very seriously! :D

Something that really amazed me when I first came to the US from Latin America was the fact that people were really interested in getting a free t-shirt even if it had the logo of a company in it, not a clothing brand - It’s like they were happy to advertise any company for free, as long as they’d get one more piece of clothing. One of my first jobs here was recruiting blood donors, and we would either give two free movie tickets or a t-shirt with the company logo printed in it, in exchange for a blood donation. The majority of people preferred the t-shirt and would wear it out in public, so I was very puzzled by that. “Maybe they don’t have enough clothes?” was my first thought, but they did. Then, I also started seeing people walking around with the red, Coca-Cola t-shirt or a Starbucks logo. Later, I switched jobs to another company and I got “company swag” as a holiday gift. Why is my holiday gift as an employee, the chance to advertise you for free with what I wear? And why are my coworkers so excited about the “swag”?
By the way, my cousin (from my country) also wanted one of the free t-shirts from my old job, but she wanted it to sleep in it, never to wear it out in public!
Marketing and advertising can also become part of a culture, if we let it.

I am trying to ween myself of logos as part of my journey with minimalism. I have a few core brands which I wear, and have been loyal to for over 20 years (Carhartt WIP, Dickies, Vans, North Face) my issue is that these brands do tend to make incredibly durable and long lasting clothes, most of the time - and when I try to find unbranded. basic alternatives, the quality is not the same in a lot of other brands "basics". I live in London in the UK, so i have access to just about every option imaginable, but a lot of basics are just thin (low GSM fabrics) and not good quality construction. Eg, I have a handful of Carhartt branded hoodies which are over 5 years old and still as thick and cosy and in the same condition as when I purchased them. Likewise on their T-Shirts 240gsm tshirts that don't lose their shape or colour like cheaper JCREW or Uniqlo shirt. But as I get closer to 40, the idea of being a billboard for any brand is a bit weird to me, and overly branded clothes does tend to look slightly "young" which i guess is cool when you are 21, nor as much when you are 35+

Clothing with Logos now (largely, there are a few exceptions) mean very little in terms of excellent quality (unless you are buying Couture) and are just pricer clothes with a picture or word on it. If it makes you happy and you can afford it, buy and wear what you like! The idea of an Auditorium full of "minimalists" gunning for a guy for wearing a logo HORRIFIES me! Xx

Its a bit of a moot point because not wearing a logo (or maybe wearing a very small logo) is as much a brand statement for minimalism than wearing a logo would for maybe a sports star or fashion icon. Most people use clothing to some extent to convey information to others about who they are what they do (or at least who they would like to be). Wearing a lot of logos would conflict with the minimalist ethos of not supporting consumerism. And I have noticed a lot of people choosing to do the same thing - to the point that logos are seen as uncool & behind the times. But then you get the people who are still happily into consumerism who still like wearing the logos because for them it does convey a positive message about who they are, how they want to feel and would like others to see them.

@@username00009 Sure. But my point is - for these guys ‘the Minimalists’ wearing basic black or white and no or minimal logos is in reality as much of a brand statement for them - as wearing a Nike logo would be for a professional sports player. But there are some people who do see clothing in a purely functional way and are not bothered or concerned with the image or look of it.
