Galadriel isn't stoic. Stoicism is to endure hardship without complaint. All she does is complain, and make it every one else's problem. Being demanding and brash. She's a child cosplaying as a male warrior, badly. The ACTUAL Galadriel is stoic.

True, a stoic wouldn't complain about the situation, stoic would try to control their emotions and make the best out of the hand they were dealt. That's not Galadriel at all, her emotions are the impetus that drive her. She makes illogical decisions based solely on her emotions and is driven by them. complaining is seen as the most pathetic thing a human can do in stoicism which is half the show

well, 2 things. 1) amazon fired the "tolkien scholar" because he kept pointing out everything they were doing wrong that violated established lore like.... 2) everything galadriel does was actually elrond's story. they literally took elrond's "military" actions during the start of the 2nd age and gave it to galadriel. you may ask, well what did galadriel do? at the end of the 1st age, she married the forest elven lord, and birthed her daughter. during the 2nd age, galadriel lived with her husband, the forest lord, and raised her daughter. everything galadriel does, is lifted from a man, elrond. thats why it feels like such a mary-sue or man's tale. it literally is.

The Galadriel from the source material was a clan leader, a politician as much as she was a wife. She founded three cities, inclucing Ost in Edhil. She was also a powerful mage, or rather druid. The fact that she was the recipient of one of the great rings shows that she was seen by Sauron as one of the three most powerful elves on middle earth.

@@arizona_anime_fan Maybe, but the fact remains, that the ring of adamant "Nanya" was Galadriel's. And she remarked that she did not use it once she became aware of Saurons influence, if I recall correctly. The other two bearers did not do either, even though Cirdans ring ended up with Gandalf as the bearer, it was the ring of fire. As a spiritual being he was not endangered so much as men or elf. Remember what happened when Tom Bombadil put on the One Ring. He did not vanish or anything. He was entirely unaffected. Nobody knows for sure what Tom Bombadil was, only his creator did, and Tolkien is safe in the halls of Mandos, we cannot ask him!

Galadriel was an high elf. Her power was knowledge and wisdom. And she had the gift of foresight. She was actually a tragic character. She knew that the days of elves in middle earth were about to end. Not that nonsense blade wielding. Elrond is an half elf from a period when humans and elves were still on good terms. Sauron was meant to be attractive and likeable, especially at the time RoP is meant to be set, but Galadriel was meant to be one of the few who saw through that disguise. This isn't even an issue of extended works vs LotR appendices. Galadriel has always been one of the few who sees through any disguise Sauron tries to pull so the fact that she gets duped by Halbrand is a major disservice to her character and the level of rivalry the two have.

And they failed at that. If they wanted to make her character a strong female lead, then they shouldn't have just made her a moody/rash, male analog. Clad her in armor and give her a sword, basically, make her a dude. Plus her power comes from her grace, her resolve, her nurturing, and wisdom, all qualities they dropped to make her, well, more manly and flawed. She is not a warrior and doesn't need to be one to be a strong female lead. It's like they pandered to feminists without considering what a strong women in her position would even look like or act like, failing at both in the process.

Even if RoP-Galadriel was played by a man, it would still be a bad character. A traditional male hero is likeable not just because he can beat up bullies and evil-doers, but also because he is selfless and stands up for those who need him. Even if he is outwardly an aloof anti-hero, he will still have that "heart of gold" when it counts. RoP-Galadriel lacks that completely.

    Quoting someone else here -
"It is generally agreed that $1 billion was spent on Rings of Power. If we take into account inflation, this would be $587 million in 2002, during the middle of filming of LOTR. The budget of LOTR was $281 million. So, even adjusted for inflation, the budget of ROP was still a whopping 108.8% higher than LOTR.
Second, LOTR total run time (Extended Editions) is 683 minutes. Total run time of all ROP episodes is approximately 560 minutes across all 8 episodes. This means that "They had to spread the budget out over a bunch of TV episodes" doesn't hold water because the movie is actually longer than the show while spending significantly less."

In the anime Demons only speak to humans to live/kill them. One scene in the anime of a young demon and he only says “mama” is because it what makes humans from not killing it even though the young demon killed multiple people that gave the young demon mercy. It is established in the anime that demons have no remorse and only care about themselves. The reason why Frieren is so cold against them is because of that fact and that her home village was also destroyed by demons. Just like what the anime implies they are monsters that learn how to speak to kill humans. Give mercy to a demon will only lead to casualties based on the anime’s world.

They weren't even a separate species - the orcs were descendants of elves, who in ages past were brutally tortured and mutilated to become orcs. Tolkiens' heroes also repeatedly caution against being merciless and cold as Freiren is, especially Gandalf. Aragorn seeks peace with the folk that formerly followed the Dark Lord, such as the Haradrim. Even the Dark Lord himself - Sauron, and even his master Melkor - were written as not originally evil, but corrupted by having different designs from the one god Eru. Even the Dark Lord himself was repeatedly forgiven, and ultimately 'died' due to expending himself rather than being killed by the heroes. It's explicitly stated Galadriel went to middle earth to spite feanor and rule her own land. Unfinished tales goes further since some of Tolkiens last notes stated he intended to have Galadriel fighting the Noldor at alqualonde in the first kinslaying. Galadriel and altogether noldorin elves were quite violent and vengeful... that's why there is a war of the jewels for like 600 years. So no, Galadriel being that way never changes but adding the dynamic about her brother works. Ripley is stoic in the beginning of Alien and makes good decisions but as everyone around her makes stupid mistakes it puts her into more and more danger. You want to know what makes those super stoic female characters work so well? Like Sarah Connor, Ripley and The Bride? They’re all feminine. Not sexually feminine, but MATERNALLY feminine. That makes an enormous difference. Take Sarah Connor in T2, if you look at her actions and take away her maternal instinct or relationship with John, she’s actually just Rings of Power Galadriel. A bit of an asshole obsessed with Vengeance.

    • @aimerw
      @aimerw 11 месяцев назад +28

Ripley actually has a lot of emotion and shows it. However, she is good at controlling her fear and fueling it into actions that push her through the danger around her, rather than falling apart. So she is stoic where it has power, but is otherwise quite relatable - which makes her a good character. Combine that with the fact that she isn't trying to to go head-to-head physically with the Alien, instead using wits to avoid bad situations and only sparsely combating the Alien by using modern weaponry set up in difficult-to-fail circumstances (like a flamethrowing along a ventiliation shaft), and it becomes very believable.
The strength of fantasy is for the world to be fantastical, while having characters that are realistic trying to deal with that world. If the characters themselves are too fantastical then you need to lean on some other genre's strengths to remain interesting (whether that is the visuals and sound of action movies, the passion of romance stories, the humour of comedy shows, etc.). A female lead who is physically overpowering compared to their enemies is difficult to relate to and is quite fantastical - so the only time it shines is when it veers into other genres.

best example of the top of my head: Homura from Madoka Magica (spoilers btw for a 10+ year old show)
Homura from the beginning is portrayed as a cold stoic girl, almost a bitch sometimes, whos hellbent on just one purpose, much like RoP Galadriel, but as we learn more about the world/other characters, we begin to understand her more, and then the big reveal in episode 10 where we see she was actually a cute timid moe girl, but because she couldnt save her best friend from dying, and then watching her die over and over every time she turned back time, she turns cold and stoic and hellbent on just saving her friend

Galadriel is a Mary Sue, doesn't matter that she has flaws that WE the AUDIENCE can perceive, but the storytelling don't deal with it as flaws. Her bad behavior and viciousness has no consequences and everyone that is against her is considered wrong, not by virtue of truth and righteousness, but because she's the protagonist.
Meanwhile, the whole story of Frieren is about her flaws and the problems of her condition as an elf in a world of mortals.

"... I can't explain it, it just feels weird to me..."
    Okay, I'LL explain it then.
The reason it's more believable for fantasy women to be mages rather than knights is because fantasy magic is a metaphor for GUNS. Instead of a pistol, you use Ray of Frost. Instead of a shotgun, you use Cone of Cold. Instead of an rpg, you cast Fireball. That's why it's more believable. Modern weapons are so deadly that they eliminate the gap between the sexes VERY fast. It's more believable that a woman will learn to use a pistol than it is for her to overpower a larger man without any leverage.
Also, women who can shoot are hot. Nuff said.

The qualities that Sauron had were more relatable than Galadriel as he was more human by effects than Galadriel. His character actually gave life a shot and wanted to live in "peace". I mean Australia's constitution was written for the 'peace, order and good government' in every state. That motive in which we live for now is what Sauron wanted, so why should Galadriel be the good person with the emphasis of trying to achieve freedom? So many unanswered questions because the writer was inconsistent with what they wrote, just scratching words on paper calls it a day, gets paid. Such scummy life we live in.

@@hafirenggayuda A whole season has passed. I'm not sure how long you will be anticipating this show for. Like apart from that wizard's story; where we found out, who he and was who he is, what his powers are, but we didn't understand why he is there. He had the most character development. With Galadriel we never understood her background and motives not because that is her character or anything like that. It's because it's never written or emphasized at all. We were expected as an audience to follow along with it and suck it up.
Look at Macbeth's fighting scene for instance. We understand a lot about Macbeth from the fight because Shakespeare wrote something to build Macbeth's character even further through it. He is strong and stoic bound by a prophecy that he will forever be king. He fights at his castle and singlehandedly defeats many opponents. He fights the guy that eventually kills him but loses armour pieces during the challenge. His crown and stoic attitudes begin to wear down when he realises he can't fight on any longer. He sees the prophecy to be false and struggles to keep his crown on his head. So we see him stabbed suddenly through the heart and dies. It shows how a person cannot take on multiple burdens alone no matter how invincible the author may make them. While we believe our world is instantly different the characters are no different than us. Weakness to elements begins when the mind weakens. Talking to his opponent and reasoning how wrong he was, reaching a conclusion through conversation was his defeat.
Meanwhile when Galadriel was stuck on the island. Instead of showing a bit of a wear down as all her opportunities for growth and leaving the country were nullified. The character was made into a bully who threatened people instead of talking to them and understanding them.

Jaina's conflict and search for peace, the Horde's search for a place and meaning, the Alliance's struggle for survival, Arthas's ruthless quest for domination, Illidan's own "the end justifies any means" crusade. ALL of these stories were incredibly human and relatable even from the perspective of someone who'd never touched the medium and watched them for the first time.

Here's my deal. If they had advertised this show as a "reimagining" of Lord of the Rings, where we'd see some of our beloved characters on-screen, but not necessarily within the context of Tolkien's works, I can bet you a million bucks this series would have been far-better received by LotR fans. If it had simply been advertised as a reimagining. No problem with that.
Studios did this with the 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland-- wasn't the greatest film in the world, but it wasn't panned for "not being the book" because it wasn't advertised that way. So it was a success. Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera: advertised as an rock opera reimagining of the story. Super successful. Snow White and the Huntsman: same thing. Good movie? Maybe not the greatest, but (again) wasn't panned for "not being Snow White", and it went on to be a success.
It was because Rings of Power declared that it was Tolkien's work "come to life". And that was an emphatic lie. People went in expecting to see Tolkien's work, and they got a completely different story masquerading as a half-baked version of The Silmarillion. It's one thing to change a story from its written works to satisfy certain cinematic aspects. Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children (2016). Stardust (2007). A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004). All these films, btw, *were wholeheartedly approved by the original writers.* But you don't f**k with a fanbase that's lasted three quarters of a century. You just don't.

But western writings biggest problems are the restrictions they place on themselves. And they have rules like what kind of characters have to be in the books and how to depict certain things like alien races (Which was the reason old sci-fi authors like Isaac Asimov and Frank Herbert didn't include them in their books) And now they are enforcing that on European countries as well. 35:30 It's not "fucked up", it's PURE logic. Psychopaths, what these demons are modelled after, are not insane. Insanity is clinically defined as being irrational. Psychopaths are hyperrational, not deterred by emotions like pity, regret or remorse, nor most other emotions. They can get thrills from sadistic highs or the thrill of their bad behaviour found out, but that's it - which is why they seek those thrills. Being hyper-rational does not mean they find the correct answers to things, that still relies on what information you have and how your hubris messes with that. Hubris is something strong in psychopaths. To someone incapable of forming emotional bonds, and in the background of the show, not even understanding what family means, the behaviour and explanations of the demon girl are completely logical. To psychopaths, as well as narcissists in general, people are not people. People are things, resources. Thus to the demon girl, the mayor cried about having lost his daughter, so the demon girl killed a mother to give him her daughter so he could have a daughter again. The psychopath demon girl does not comprehend the concept of an emotional bond and just sees "daughter" as a thing to be owned; as children of psychopaths who were lucky to not get these evil genes passed on, surely, traumatized, learned throughout their childhood: That they were never seen as people, but possessions.

20:28 I'd have to agree. I've dabbled a little in some martial arts when I was younger. We did mixed trainings. I might have been stronger than some men back then, but most definitely not stronger than the men I was training with. Imagine fighting full blown warriors, it just won't happen. It is one of my gripes with the Viking shows these days too, I mean there were some shield maidens, but exeptionally rare, basically all the fighters were male. If women really wanted someone dead, they'd generally have to be more resourceful, like poisoning food or stabbing someone in the neck while they were asleep, or cursing them or whatever if that works haha. For me as a female it's not really relatable either to see a woman killing a gazillion warriors around her with her sword.
38:03 As far as a stoic female characters not being something men would like, I'm not sure I agree. Like one of the chatters said, some Japanese female stoic characters are very well written and do have male fans. I'm also a rather stoic person myself, and do notice most men prefer more emotional ladies, but luckily there are those who actually appreciate it if emotions aren't out there so much, and when they are, at least they are real.

He wasn't described so much a warrior but as a wise elf who built the cavernous stronghold of Nargothrond and battled Sauron with songs of magic. His house of Finarfin was spared from exile because they did not partake in the 1st kinslaying. Finrod followed the exiled elves to Middle Earth because he wanted to OPPOSE Feanor's rule. LIke the removal of complexity and revealing of information with out asking the audience to think has become so bad, even the dubs of an anime would choose thin the depth of dialogue just to make things more apparent for the viewer.

The lack of realism really comes from the bad fight scene writing than Galadriel bei,g a women or never been in difficulty. Take another popular fantasy serie : GOT. When Brienne of Torth or Arya (half the time) fight, it is believable. It is pure bullshit like every fights on TV but the coreography makes it believable. While in ROP, when Galadriel kill the oger or fight these five or six men, it is weird because the coreography is so bad that everything feels unnatural and not in a good way. For instance, Galadriel is suppose to have a lot more strenght than any human because she is an elf, but it is very inconsistant throughout the show. It is difficult to see her being dragged against her will by a human in one scene and making one fly after barely pushing him in the next. If the writers were consistant (like for Wonder Woman for instance) the fight scenes would nit be so weird.

I like the phrase "shared human experience", because it tells that there is a universal truth which affects us all, no matter how different we are on the surface, and that's the difference between good and bad fictional writers.
Good fiction writers know for example, that believebility is judged based on reference.
For example, there are no dragons irl, so people are more willing to accept more variations of then, as long as they have some kind of wings. But people know instinctively that the more south you go, the darker the skin color gets, and no matter how high fantasy your story is, it will not change how people will perceive the world based on hiw the real world is.
The shared human experience also affect how people will expect male and female characters to act in a given situation, etc.

It's not always that physically powerful women capable of dominating battlefields with brute force isn't possible, but how the character is set up and presented. What also matters is what an audience can infer from the character based on how they talk, carry themselves, etc. For instance when Erza is introduced in Fairy Tail, she's hyped up to be a beast of supreme strength, Lucy imagines a literal monstrous figure and makes the viewers speculate what this woman is supposed to look like as well and when she's introduced she's actually an average looking woman but she's carrying a fucking horn the size of three large men with a single hand and is dressed in armor. This establishes she has impressive strength but it isn't just because she was always like that as her backstory fills in the gaps without directly telling us. Her days as a slave although harsh and cruel definitely served a role in her abnormal strength as her as she's shown to be very focused, diligent, and hardworking. She's said to be the strongest member of guild before Gildarts, Mirajane, Mystogan and Loxus are stated to be at her same level or above and the main character Natsu, whose introduction involved causing mass destruction, and Gray, portrayed to be a rival to Natsu, are both so terrified of getting their ass kicked by her immediately stop their bickering. They build her up as a powerhouse properly before having her trounce a room filled with enemies with ease.
And no one ever complains or criticize her as a Mary Sue, even though she very much could've been rightfully criticize as one earlier because the show never shows her off as infallible. She takes her opponents seriously and acknowledges them as threats that can harm if she's careless and she doesn't even say that, you can tell just because of the look in her eye when she starts beating everyone's asses. Despite this she's shown to be an extremely vulnerable person later just before the Tower of Heaven arc when it's revealed that her armor isn't just part of her ascetical theme, it's actually metaphorical of her fears and insecurities. She wears it to feel safe and protected, because she doesn't ever want to be hurt again. She isn't strong because she's awesome, she's strong because she's broken and scared inside and is hiding from the world when she's wearing her armor. And as she overcomes these flaws her later attitude changes slightly, she's more often and more willing to reveal her frilly side, always seen taking interest in new clothing, often dresses and such, and obsessing over sweets. Despite her very masculine nature and boldness, she actually wants to be a very feminine woman, even going so far as to put a flower in her hair because she thought it was cute and is genuinely enraged when it hilariously wilts and dies.

They explicitly say and show how she decided to be one but you never question it because the implications are strong from the start.

Asmongold is right about western modern writers writing a male character and replacing it with a female. Problem with female characters in the west is they lack flaws, femininity and a personality. Many are obnoxious "I am a woman who don't need a man, flaws and a convincing backstory".
My all-time favorite movies were the predator where 7 muscle bound and high testosterone men go in guns blazing at the start kicking some rebel groups ass in the middle of the jungle only to then start shitting them selfs with many having a mental break as the predator picks them of. Even Dutch in many instances looks scared shitless and has no idea what to do. And even by the third act where hes 1v1ing the predator he only beats the predator because he sets up a trap.
Ripley from Aliens was another person who in the second movie had nightmares and was scared shitless and at first refuse to go to that planet and contact that colony and you could see fear in her eyes.
Ripley reminded me of a mother figure who even out of her depth would risk her life to for her child.
pvt vasquez in the second aliens movie was even well written. She reminded me of my lesbian cousin who was a badass and wanted to be of the boys who would hang out with me and my mates doing bloke shit, cracking jokes and was cool af. "Just because something is fiction doesn't mean it shouldn't have a bit of realism in it."
That's an old truism and not a new amazing revelation. But the word you are looking for isn't "realism", it's "internal logic". Every fictional world setting, even if it contains magic or supowerpowers, needs to have the writer set down rules and limitations how things work and then follow those rules to stay believable. As Terry Pratchett once wrote (in his preface to the Discworld Ank-Morpork city map), good writers realize that setting limitations on yourself means you have to get creative. Changing the rules of your fictional world in the middle of the story just because you want X to happen without having to think how the character might accomplish that is lazy writing.
Too many bad writers think that "fictional" equals "If I say so any random thing I want to happen can happen" and whine how they don't want to be "limited" by rules or internal logic, pretending that having absolute "freedom" makes stories better when in reality it makes them worse because they become arbitrary drivel.

At the end of the day, Frieren seems more likeable and... human I guess? She is detached, but she doesn't seem to actively dislike people. You can get the feeling that she has a hard time getting people close to her because of her mindset, but she does cares for the people around her - and by the end of the opening episode, we see her realize how much she is missing and work towards improving herself. Meanwhile... Galadrielle?
It doesn't have to be mage vs fighter. Seirei no Moribito had a female fighter as protagonist, she didn't have a chip on her shoulder and bad case of "Look at how awesome and edgy I am, everyone around me is shit and no one appreciates me"-itis. She has a small chip on her shoulder and a task she wants done, but she is mature enough to have some kind of acceptance of her particular place in the world as a woman who is very good in what is clearly stated to be a man's business. I know there's more to writing a female character than writing a decent male character and gender-flipping it, but damn, Gally is a gender-flipped male edgelord.

You get Dragon Lolies who speak like Aethelwulf with exaggerated archaic Japanese pathos, then you get the quiet kid who always speaks in the polite register even amongst their equals, then there's the maids who are the same but much more dignified and charismatic, to the point that you can't like Anime without liking maids, and butlers, then there's the Ojou-sama archetype, where they basically speak like that exaggerated posh British nobleman, but they are female now, and even the nobles themselves have a type of suffix honorific exclusive to them, Kyō・卿 for male nobles, and jō・嬢 for females. And then there's a street thug speech archetype where you sound rough and menacing, swearing, but not through word choices, but actually word conjugations. There's just a shit ton of those speech archetypes where the slightest change of pronouns or register levels can have a huge impact on the story, since Japanese is way more dramatistic than English, so much so that you have pronouns for kings, rulers, knights, samurai, and so on. Shit's so ridiculous, they had to give it a name, which is Yakuwarigo・役割語, or Archetype Speech, as in, the literal role and or hierarchy of a character demonstrated through the type of speech register they use in a story.

I always thought elves don't actually die, they travel to the halls of Mandos and if they aren't Feanor, leave the halls for Valinor after getting over their "death".

True, but what’s more Finrod was actually one of the few, if not the only one instantly released from the halls and is totally fine in Valinor. So when Galadriel jumps off the boat to ‘avenge him’, in RoP, she could have literally stayed in the boat and just gone and seen him and spoke to him 😂

Peter Jackson's LOTR understood women can be powerful without the need for "power means physical strength therefore make the woman a warrior"

If anyone has read the manga Azumi thats a perfect way to make a warrior type girl character. She never overpowers anyone with her strength. If she gets grappled by a man she has no shot but she is just so much faster than everyone else that she dodges and slips all of their attacks instead of blocking massive hits like a gigachad.

An important aspect of Frieren is that not only he is a moving force for her, but he is the ultimate goal, she is literally trying to go to heaven so she can speak to him again, that's the most important part of the plot
