no, tvs is a PN junction diode much similar to the zener diode. difference in zener and TVS is power dissipation same size zener may be 1 watt for regular regulation. but same size TVS can dissipate 1500 watt peak pulse power. it is because of the size of the PN junction thermistor is a resistor. and a MOV have similar function but MOV is made be metal oxides
Years ago I was using a VFD to experiment with 400 hz into a microwave oven transformer. The turning the transformer on and off damaged a large diode. I took a large diode out of my junk box and replaced it not knowing what it was for, but it worked again! I now know what that diode was for thanks to you. I wish I saved the original damaged diode to replace it with the correct part!

Can I connect 2 unidirectional TVS in series to double the breakdown voltage? I have a 170 V damaged TVS and want to replace with to identical 85V TVS? Is it possible?
@@HaseebElectronicsThanks a lot! I just tried and it look it works. I see now the circuit is working but I when increasing the DC voltage over 250V (DC voltage in the solar inverter input) the smps circuit start working an I see 170V across these series TVS. I want to know there are circuits when TVS are designed to work as constant voltage limiter like a zener diode or maybe I have something wrong although the circuit is working well for some time?
I compared it with another working circuit and the voltage value is 170V on the undamaged TVS when the smps start working. Thanks for this very useful video!
Hi, I have a DC motor operating at 24 VDC @20amp. On the supply line a surge voltage of +/-250VDC for 500msec is getting generated. In such case how to select the TVS diode? Also if current is also an important factor right?
sometimes it becomes short circuit and it drops the supply voltage. due to its maximum breakdown limits it short circuit is eliminated very easily that it clamps all voltage in that line
Hi there, I have a question, bought a new plasma cutter from China. I plugged in machine to power outlet and by just switching it on. The machine turns on for a second and trips the circuit breaker. Is the machine faulty? The seller asked me to change to a bigger socket outlet 240vac which I am already using 30 amps non fused. Additiinally upon receiving the machine, the 240vac input wire seems like funny looking with sticky substance on the outer insulation. Hope you could guide me. I clamped on anmeter to the 240vac and it reads roughly 12amps and trips the breaker. Thanks for the great videos.
does the circuit breaker for building trips off or the machines circuit breaker trips OFF? if the machin's breaker trips off, then it is very clear that the machine have something wrong. it is expected that the machine have some issue. after turning ON for 1 second, it seems that the surge protection circuit have some defect. or the power stage have some issue if the building breaker trips off then, it means your utility line is to be upgraded.
@@HaseebElectronics Hi, it is building circuit trips, the outlet is dedicated to welding machines, and all machines have worked with load on. Meaning weld at high amps. However, the new plasma machine is just switched on at no working load. Meaning no cutting at all. Just power on. And on clamp meter it shows 12amps draw before triping breaker. My breaker is rated at 20 amps.
@@HaseebElectronics I also measured resistance on the power socket after leaving unit unpowered for over night. The resistance keep fluctuating and the lowest reading was 0.2 k ohms and varies to 3.3k ohms.
Anyone, please help. I have a Shower Heater-Unit with adjustable power control (potentiometer) that was given to me by my neighbor to fix and keep for myself, and after dismantling it I found on the control PCB a bidirectional diode with such electrolysis damage on it which dissolved both of its terminals and it was hanging at its place on the board by the rust (the symbol on the PCB is for a BTVS). I have tried to put solder at the two ends to attach new terminals to it so I can reconnect it in its place but they will not stick. There are no service manuals for this unit I could find by searching on Google and I am wondering how to fix this unit without knowing the part number or the clamping voltage of the diode (since there are no terminals left sticking out from the two ends) . The diode itself is a pink glass type with the "cathode" black band in the middle and D8 is written on it. The diode is also not clamping anything in parallel (as in the case you describe to protect something from overvoltage on the board). Instead is connected in series to the gate of a small triack on the board (0107MA - To92) and to some other point on the board. The triack is probably driving an even bigger (high power) semiconductor that controls the heating element current and which is attached directly to the water heating unit (probably for heating cooling issues) and it is not on the control board. Any ideas on how to attach terminals to this diode? What is the range of or typical clumping voltages for these diodes? As a last resort to salvage this diode I was thinking if it is a good idea to use electrolysis and grow new copper terminals at the two ends if I immerse the one end of the diode in the solution and put a needle/pin with some high enough voltage to make the diode conducting current and start the deposition of the metal at the other end, then if it succeeds flip the diode and repeat.
THANK YOU. WELL DONE. Datasheet show that 1.5KE12C/CA parameter "Vcl @ Ipp 10/10000us" where Vcl=16.7V and Ipp=90A. Does this mean that TVS is clamping 28.7Vpk pulse (12V+16.7V) or 16.7Vpk pulse (12V+4.7V) @ Ipp=90A ??

Sir how to select components for project??
are TVS diode and MOV of similar materials dear haseeb sir?
no dear, both are different materials
MOV is made from Oxides
but TVS diode is highly matured PN junction to work in reverse region (zener mode)
