  • The Sega 32X may have been a failed retro gaming add on to the Sega Genesis and Sega CD...but that doesn't mean it's not worth checking out! Steam Deck Emulation is huge (especially with the Steam Deck OLED now) so let's find out how to emulate 32X games on Steam Deck via EmuDeck emulation and RetroArch emulation! It's an Emudeck setup tutorial AND a RetroArch tutorial / RetroArch how to for Steam Deck!

When enough of you keep asking me for the SAME THING I try to listen...so here we go; Steam Deck coverage! But of course this is a retro gaming channel so it's not like we are going to talk about modern PC Gaming on the Steam Deck...we are going to talk about retro emulation...more specifically Sega 32x emulation via RetroArch and EmuDeck! Because there are a decent amount of gaming hidden gems on the 32X

On today's Steam Deck video I will go over how to get Sega 32X games running on your Steam Deck via RetroArch and PicoDrive with a Steam Deck emulation guide, including required bios / firmware files, game formats, how to use Emu Deck 2 (EmuDeck 2) to facilitate the process and most importantly how to start enjoying Mega Drive 32x games on Steam Deck today!
Again I recommend getting a Dock for your Steam Deck as the process is MUCH easier that way!
But the Steam Deck is proving to be an amazing retrogaming handheld video game emulation machine and I love it!

The tower of power! The only time I ever played a real 32X was when my friend and I rented one from Blockbuster back in the day. We rented Virtua Racing with it, and I still feel that version is the best home version of Virtua Racing with the exception of the new Switch version. Even better, the 32X version of Virtua Racing opens with Ed O'Neill yelling "Virtuaaa Racing!!". lol, if it's not actually Ed O'Neill, it is one hell of a sound-alike!

It was fun back in the day being able to rent consoles. I remember doing it for SNES

Cosmic Carnage is a pretty awesome fighting game exclusive to the 32X, it's got a great soundtrack, plenty of style and a ton of depth! Great job as always with these tutorials, thank you for all your hard work!

I use to really enjoy playing Space Harrier and After Burner on the 32X. Really good ports been done for the piece. A little sluggish because of the frame rate. But graphically impressive just like the Saturn ports as well.
The other title that I love for the unit is Tempo. A beautifully done game that is a must to have in the collection. 8^)

The 32x gets a lot of flak, but I had fun with the system: it gave me a place to play Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter when I couldn't yet afford a Saturn (I much prefer VR Deluxe over TWI's Saturn port anyways). Plus, Afterburner Complete and Space Harrier were great fun on the 32x, and I prefer the 32x version of MK2 over the other ports of the time outside of the DOS version: the Japanese PSX port is superior in many ways (and the Saturn version is graphically better though is seriously flawed), but only the 32X and Genesis have that Matt Furniss remixed soundtrack that I love (love the original arcade music too...but not as much). The WWF Wrestlemania The Arcade Game and NBA Jam TE (pfft Stockton choked on the that 3, but the mailman would have delivered ) ports are a lot of fun and improved over the Genesis ports. Star Wars Arcade is fun, but it's not one I ever picked up. The original DooM port is flawed, but it ran okay (fairly similar to our 486SX-33 Packard Bell) and was the first time I played anything but the shareware DOS release. World Series Baseball on the 32X, however, is not as good as the Genesis entries; WWF Raw is barely an upgrade over the Genesis/SNES versions; Pitfall The Mayan Adventure and Primal Rage on 32X are okay but not my favorite ports; and Motocross Championships isn't very good though I still played had some fun with it (and at least it's more fun, IMO, than Supercross 3d on the Jag). Blackthorne is an excellent game both on 32X and SNES and PC; Tempo looks and sounds great and plays okay; 36 Great Holes is one of, if not *the*, best console golf games of its time; and, T-Mek is fun but I was already a fan of the arcade version (this was the last game I bought for the 32X when Toys'R'Us was clearance-ing out the games and was the last time I bought any of the clearance games before they were gone: only had the cash on me for one game because I had just bought Diablo for PC, was about a month or two after that came out...I was going to get Web of Fire [like $6...] but switched to Toughman Contest then saw they still had one T-Mek slip). Yeah, there's some bad and average 32x games plus many of the Probe-developed games are just Genesis upgrades, but there's still some great fun to be had in the 32x library. DooM 32X Resurrection is a standout homebrew port, and it certainly puts the original port to shame though I still have that port to thank for giving me a taste of more than the shareware DooM (I didn't get a full release of PC DooM until much later ["borrowing" the WADs after I bought the retail DooM II Win95 CD release]). I'm glad to see the Steam Deck handling the system just fine though I didn't have any doubt it could.

Everything gets flak these days sadly. Apparently there were only ever 3 good consoles ever if you ask the internet lol

@@VideoGameEsoterica Well, Mr 🥓, the Internet is right. There *were* only 3 good game systems throughout history: the Tiger R-Zone, the Amstrad GX4000, and, obviously, the unreleased Infinium Labs Phantom. Every other system is for those class-less philistines.
