I definitely agree with the portability factor being a HUGE benefit. Makes perfect sense! For me, since I spent nearly a decade in the commercial/TV world before switching to weddings, my C70 rig is still smaller than what those rigs looked like. Say a prayer for my back in 20 years tho. hahah
Hi John, can you do a video of how you set up your FX3 for a wedding shoot? Also would love to see the difference between footage quality from your canon as well!
In 2018 I realized that DSLR was not comparable to Mirrorless for photography or video. I rented an A7III and after a few days of experimenting, I made the change from Nikon full frame to Sony. I traded in almost $30,000 in bodies and lenses and lost over $6000 in trade in value. If Had waited longer it would’ve cost me more. If you’re in business and you can make up the loss of your investment in future revenue, then it can make sense. I’ve made the losses back and as such it makes sense. If you are a hobbyist, an amateur or do not make money off of your cameras, a switch to different camera systems wouldn’t make much sense.
So why two fx3 and one a7siii? Which cameras will be on tripods and which camera will be on you all day? I’m thinking of getting an s3 and two a7c as that is what my budget would allow
Great question! So the FX3 is basically the same thing as the A7Siii, with the exception of no EVF, and it has a built in fan for cooling the camera. I bought this one first because the a7siii was on back order. Really liked the size and weight, so I ordered another FX3. The A7Siii is on back order, so I found a gently used one as a 3rd camera (it’s cheaper by like $500), and it has the EVF which makes it easier for me to take photos when I travel as well. I’ll use the FX3 as my A and B cam during the day; and the a7siii as a gimbal angle and C cam. A and B cams will be on tripods during the ceremony and during toasts. But ill switch between monopod and handheld during the preps and other parts of the day.
I switched from a Panasonic video kit and a Canon photo kit now to a full Sony photo/video kit and its SO much more portable and powerful. Really loving the A1/A7sIII/FX3 combo.
Holla! I’m no brand loyalist; like you say, the tool should help me tell the story. For me, heck yeah the new Sonys help!!! With the new 70-200 GM, all the amazing new Tamron lenses and the A7IV as an incredible 3rd angle / hybrid body it’s a good time!
Well Said John, I switched brands a little over 2 years ago and you covered all the major points - it is VERY expensive, and it takes a lot of time to adjust. One thing I would add is I didn't expect is how much I learned by switching cameras - it pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me a lot of new things. I didn't realize it, but it's so easy to not fully understand how your camera is working when you stick with one brand forever, (at least that was my case) because it's always just worked the same way. I feel like I've become a better shooter because of it. I like how you mention that it's not always about what objectively "the best" camera too, Canon may still win in some areas (IQ) but for the work you do the Sony is just better! I've found that picking a camera that is the lightest and quickest setup for me has done wonders for me too, I love not worrying about carrying around so much and just focusing on shooting the best images I can.... good luck with the switch!
I brought a new camera (A74) last Saturday morning, then shot my first paid wedding on Saturday evening. I already own the s3 so it was easy & quick to set up.👍😀
Nice. I have been contemplating selling the C70 for many of the same reasons. Is there any reasons you didn't go back to the R5? Also where are you planning to sell your gear?
I've been with Sony Since 2012 when no one else was even thinking about them due to their A mount DSLT line having full HD 60 and internal stabilization at a time where canon only offered 720p 60 and no stabilization (canon jitter footage).....There has been alot of growing pains through the years but betting on this underdog to win the race has paid off ! I never had to switch systems (outside of migrating from A to E mount in 2015 with the S2)
Super excited for you. We are currently on two R6's with an R as a backup cam (love the footage out of all three cameras). We are debating getting a c70 with how much glass we have or just fully switching to Sony just like you did. My biggest question for you is, what does the footage like when your both on the 24-70 (both e-mount and rf mount) when it comes to stabilization shooting handheld? We love the stabilization our of our R6's but we are hesitant about the c70 not having IBIS. Thoughts?
Shooting handheld with the C70 is all about having a lens with optical stabilization, body control, and how you rig the camera. Oh and shooting style plays a huge role! I suggest rent the camera and play around with it. I own two C70's and I love them for my weddings, but I also shoot commercials so having a bigger setup plays a big factor to my clients and perceived value.
I've been team canon since the XT! It really seems like their glass will never be matched or beat and I love fast AF glass... but the ease of use went out the window with the overheating. I really, really want to stay with them but they don't make it easy. Have to get adapters and new lenses to stay anyway and I allready have adapters for sony since the 7sII came out! Anyway I love the a7s3 but the biggest sell for me was that it can shoot 4k 60 and 120 on cards I all ready own. Cheap v60 cards! That alone is amazing, as getting the R5 instead would have required another $1K in new memory cards.
Love this video! I just switched from Canon to Sony at the end of this year. Done a couple weddings so far, and have loved the a7siii. Small, light, reliable, and many other great features. I hope you come out with a video with the differences when shooting with a Sony. Also wouldn’t mind seeing how you pack everything for travel as well. Looking forward to seeing your films next year! What lenses did you go with for your Sony cameras?
Mobility is of such a huge importance in a wedding setup! When I started filming weddings, some good years ago, I was innitially considering big and impressive equipment but then, even before actually testing how it works, I decided I rather need the mobility and went mirrorless all the way. I still use my trusted Lumix camera, although I am looking close at one new a7iv... I'd like to move up to FF, and I think Sony has indeed made huge progress in all departments. Well, that is unless GH6 will really be that much better when it comes out! :)
I went from full-frame to crop. It really doesn't make a huge difference. I even shot m43 for a few weddings last year. It's all in the lens and how you use it. Bokeh doesn't make you better. what and how you put it in front of the lens is what matters.
@@kyleranney All correct! The only reason really, for me, would be the low-light performance. That's why I am still waiting to see what GH6 will bring to the table. If ISO will be much improved, I would most likely stick to M43.
@@adimatis dude heck yes! I've used the gh5 at 2500/3200 iso. It's doesn't do too bad, especially if you light. Honestly man I used the Sony and the “low light” performance comes from their built in noise reduction and when you hits the 8000 mark the colors start doing interesting things. I'd rather have a solid image with noise and fix in post than lose the colors up front. But again if you light your stuff I'm usually in the 800-2400/3200 range at max.
@@HowToFilmWeddings No l'm canon man. Love Sony, but Canon / Sony are not that too far from each quality wise. I think on the long term canon will be slightly beter than Sony.
I would say, that you shouldn't switch every time a new camera comes out, because there will always be a new camera... Next Year the Canon R5C, next will be the R1, and so on.. Invest in lenses instead! I have invested in Canon for my part (R6 and an old C100 MKII) but I plan to get a RED Komodo and it's a RF Mount. I don't wanna film weddings all my life, I prefer to film commercials, music videos, short films,..., I prefer having a heavier setup for my part.
Good points for sure! And yes you shouldn’t change back and forth a ton. It’s been 10 years since I really changed systems but it was time for me to do so.
Moving away from a monopod was the best thing I've ever done. it feels souch more natural hand held. I get a lot more shots too because I'm so much quicker hand-held.

The overheating has been the biggest issue with the R5 and why I haven't considered it. I ordered it then cancelled when I saw the 🔥issues.
The weight and size difference is big. That was the deciding factor in my going with Sony, too.
Why is it a lot to shoot on the c70

c70 has a little stabilization, but no where near the r5/6 or Sony stuff. Depending on how you like to shoot this could be a deal breaker for you

you can't shoot 4k 120fps on a v60 card on a sony a7sIII or FX3.
