I lived in Valencia from 2004 to 2009 and used this service a few times. I always found the customer service a bit unpredictable and lacking - although the staff themselves were always as friendly as they could be. Valencians are very warm people. You couldn't always predict which berth the ship would leave from, on one occasion we had to drive behind a pilot vehicle which took us on a big tour of the docks until we arrived at the ship. Whenever I told my local friends I was going on the ferry to Palma, they always said "why don't you fly?". The main advantage to me of taking the ferry was being able to take my bike and all my camping gear with me.

The ship itself was outstanding. As for the food-it seems like ever since Covid hit, it has become nearly impossible to find good food on planes, boats and trains, almost like those businesses were looking for an excuse to drop the level of service. Considering the crazy wake up time on this ferry, there’s no point in paying for the cabin or taking the overnight voyage. Better to save money, sail during daylight hours if possible and enjoy the Mediterranean views. 🛳 🌞. Thanks for another great video! 👍🏻

I’ve used ferry travel most of my adult life and still do, one of the first things I learnt was that ferry food is crap but it’s getting slightly better now, the problem is that the ro ro ferries are on a tight schedule and I’ve found that it’s the passenger who suffers, to be honest the daylight sailings are no different to the night sailings you travel at night to avail of arriving early and having a full day to explore with the daylight sailings you arrive at night and then your time is limited as to what you can do before bedtime, good informative post Dylan

I must say I enjoy your train trips so much more. This one was quite boring. The ship seemed nice and clean, but why bother with a cabin if you only 5 hours of use. Find a lounge, finger food, a few 🍺's and watch some travel movies on the IPhone.

Congratulations Dylan! You summarized extremely well , what the overnight ferry to balearics is light. Crap ood that cost less than 1 euro, sold for gold and expensive price for just 4h of sleep. Before the arrival of the fast ferry (3-4h daytime), the overnight ferries were the way to go. At this stage the only benefit of using the ferry is hat you can take your own car, and save on the rental that's all. Taking vueling , air europa or Ryanair from Valencia and sleeping in Mallorca, would have been a much better experience.

I ferried overnight from Naples Italy to Palermo Sicily in Mar 2011, and it was remarkably similar in the quality of accommodations and the quality of the food. Our poolside area was not nearly as nice as yours looked though. Our inside cabin was nice but near the engines or something. A 'not so quiet rumble' was non-stop all night long, I wore earplugs but was still bothered by it. Getting aboard initially was not nearly as smooth for us, we drove our rental car directly onto the ship, after a treacherous wild time driving through the city of Naples after dark. Of course we were lost, and we could see the ship but could not navigate towards it until finally we were on track. We were the last car to board and they closed up immediately after we pulled through. We had barely made it! Looking back, it was a great time!

It amazes me that transport operators - rail, sea or air fail to appreciate the importance of good, value for money food and beverages. It can make the difference between a journey remembered for the wrong reasons, or one of the highlights of any trip. Or am I being too simplistic?

    • @djackmanson
      @djackmanson 3 года назад +2

I guess in this case they figure the passengers are a captive market. And if you wanted to go to Mallorca you wouldn't *not* go because of the on-board food (although it would certainly be an incentive for me to take my own food on board)

This is where the Hull - Rotterdam service is good. you board early then can have a relaxing meal at a reasonable time and retire when you want. After a hard day at work, I normally have an excellent meal in the A la Carte ( never had a bad meal) refreshed break fast and after a day working in amsterdam the same in reverse. Food may not be cheap - but its worth the price due to the Quality of the product.

I think your comments about your experience were spot on. They seem to put operational considerations over passenger comfort. Still, the ferry looked spotless and seemed to run to schedule. An interesting video as usual. I’ve noticed in many of your videos when you comment about food or refreshments you don’t seem especially fussy although you sometimes mention things being pricey, so for you to observe that a meal was revolting 🤮 is notable 😉😳. I haven’t taken internal ferries in Spain, apart from a few brief costal trips in Valencia and Málaga (quite enjoyable), but I have taken several Inter-island ferries & ferries from/to Piraeus in Greece and they weren’t as nice as this vessel, although the food was just as mediocre/awful. I suspect your remarks about a captive market are pretty accurate.

    • @TheSpotify95

Yeah - limited selection of food and at a horrific price point - you're right about being a captive market. Probably costs them hardly anything to make.

Glad you liked my home city of Valencia, shame about the ferry food. I just returned from holiday in Menorca and for next year am considering doing a Valencia-Mallorca flight, couple of days in Palma then ferry from Alculdía (Mallorca) to Ciutadella (Menorca). The hotel where I stay is a 10 minute walk from the commercial port. The ferry companies that link Mallorca to Menorca are Baleària or FRS rather than Transmediterránea so maybe the food will be better, though I doubt any cheaper! Thanks for the review!

Strange arrival time. On the overnight Plymouth-Roscoff if it's going to be a calm crossing the boat shuts down for an hour a few miles out from Plymouth. But if its a westerly or north-westerly wind and going to be rough it uses that hour to head towards Falmouth, then a sharp left turn towards Roscoff so the wind is astern. Gets in about 0830 (French time) if I recall.

I guess that the day service is much more conveniant, because you can enjoy the trip and the views on the deck. So if I am not in a hurry and I want to enjoy a cruise this ferry can be an option, but the day service, not the night.
Otherwise, the plane is 8 euro(basic) with ryanair and vueling. Maybe a comparing video like a ferry vs low cost plane from Palma to Valencia could be nice to see the exact cost. Because to go to/from airport it can be time and money consuming as well.
    Good video, thanks for it.

I have never taken this ferry, but I have taken the overnight ferries between Piraeus and Crete. The also arrive early in the morning, but if you have booked a cabin you are allowed to carry on sleeping until 8am, which is the civilised way to do it. However, your ferry may have been doing a day trip back to Valencia, in which case they needed to turn around the cabins fast to have them ready for the next load.

Si son 7 horas de viaje , debiera partir a la 1.00 y llegar a las 8.00. No pueden despertarte a las 4.30 de la mañana.!! Tampoco vi ninguna entretencion a bordo. Al menos podria haber un casino o discoteque o bar ..algo para pasar la noche.

Wow. Just imagine having four people in that cabin. It would be cramped enough with 2 adults in there, adding 2 kids would be chaos. And if you've got 4 adults in there on a stag do... I dread to think!

If the ferry arrives so early what do you do until the check in time at your hotel or vacation rental??
After that dinner of fish sticks and sorry looking fries then of course it's breakfast first!!
    But then??

The one thing would add is that I’ve used these services with a pedal bike. My Spanish is reasonable but I found it nearly impossible to find out the procedure for loading the bike. None of the employees would give me a straight answer. Without any Spanish I would imagine it would have been even more stressful

This is on my to do list Dylan but in the other direction and I'd definitely do a day crossing on such a short trip I think as on either side of a night sailing you will have long waits from checking out of a hotel to checking in again assuming you're staying in hotels of course on either side. Great trip report though 😀

The announcements in English as well as the atrocious food is because this route is very popular with gammon-faced British boomers.

Thank you for your review :) although I live in Spain, I've never been on a ferry here so I can't tell how they are. I love the Baltic ferries though, strongly recommend Silja Line/Tallink from Helsinki/Tallinn to Stockholm, the food is considerably better (granted, this was before the pandemic) and the views are amazing!

I love Palma but getting there before daylight I’m not too sure about. Due to the late departure and early arrival I think I would take the day crossing or use one of the seats as a cabin doesn’t seem worth it to me .

I took that ride back in 1988, nostalgia!
Edit: nah, me I went from Barcelona to Ibiza 🤔 (InterRail + 🛳️). Time flies and my recollection lags.
Never mind, since I've visited Palma as well (1991), I figure I'll put together the cruise on the one hand with the stay on the other for a combo nostalgia!
    😁
Edit #2: On that InterRail I also visited Heineken Brouwerij in Amsterdam. Trio nostalgia alert! 🥰
Edit #3: On the bus I thought I heard friggen Rick Astley over the speakers! This trip is so '80s! 🤩
Edit #4: 12:43 yup that's the stern swimming pool as I recall it. Nothing has changed!
Edit #5: 13:00 Nope, sleeping was not part of my trip.
Edit #6: 13:40 ¡En las Baleares, todos los días son buenos!
Edit #7: yeah, let's take the bus...to Magaluf!
P.s. thanks for taking me for a ride down memory lane, cheers! 👍🌷

to return to such a fantastic Island. Pity about the food the Spanish are better than that. Is it Covid OR is it a chance to cost cut ?

I've done this trip a few times Dylan including Palma-Ibiza but these were on the Baleària line. I find the day crossings are the best because you can sit outside on the decks and more facilities are open during the day. I don't know how these ferries make any money because they always seem to very quiet and local citizens are entitled to ridiculously low subsidised fares so not much revenue from them.

Nice ship and sleeping accommodations, but I think I would enjoy it more on the Day Trip! What other choice of food was there? Personally, I would never go for Fish and chips on that type of voyage, stick with a stationary restaurant for that! I'm surprised that a Ferry has a pool, very interesting, any changing rooms? Does that ship have longer trips that would make better use of a pool?

You often show how much leg room there is (i.e. "pretty decent"), but how much room is there if the person in front fully reclines their seat? I've been on coaches where the leg room is (barely) adequate but, when the person in front lets their seat back with a bang, your knees are wedged and it's impossible to sit comfortably, if at all.
