I cried so much...When Professor Ashford says, "It's time to go. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest" I just lose it and start sobbing. No film has ever touched me in this way.
"And may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest " is Shakespeare , so it refers back to the previous joke at the start (the only intimacy between her and Ashford) " this is not the modern novel ...I suggest you go in for shakespeare ". (and theres a smile) So , in the end she rejects Donne , and Ashford says goodbye using Shakespeare ..........But not the whole quote , because its a she . "“Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. ” (so naturally had to leave out "Prince" )
i first watchd this movie wen i was in high school. didnt hav medical background that time but this movie inspired me to be a nurse. i cant count how many times i hv watchd this movie.
I hope no one you love gets cancer, because if they do you'll undersatand this movie entirely. Go back to your transformers and clap at robots hitting each other...
My supervising consultant in Head&Neck oncology suggested that I see this movie at the beginning of my course ... He said: We clinicians miss a lot of what patients "really" need and want, to the favor of what we "think" they need and want... And many patients suffer because of that ... He told me: this movie will open my mind to a different prospective, where a patient in palliative care is much more than a scientific tool ... He was right! A very moving performance... It got me in tears.. :'(
Honestly, for the last ~10 minutes, I just sobbed almost nonstop. And even now, as I'm writing this, I'm trying to make myself stop crying for the second time... It's so rare for me to find something that really, truly touches me like this did. The professor walking towards her room started the sobbing, and it continued for most of the credits. I hope y'all liked this movie as much as I did!
Who are this 11 people that rated the movie thumb down? It must had been an unavoidable class assignment. This movie is classic. Emma Thompson really tried. Both thumbs up.
A deeply moving film. Every time I watch it I find something new. And the ending -- "The Runaway Bunny" -- simply brilliant. Emma Thompson's performance is heart-rending ...
I watched a part of this movie when I was starting out in nursing school. I'm watching it again for my BSN class. I can't remember the last time I was struck so deeply by a movie. The impact is so profoundly moving and, sadly, so very accurate at times. We all like to blatantly deny, but the fact of the matter is that after many patients come and go, one can't help but become desensitized, callous, and even morbidly fascinated with the ailments and deaths occurring almost commonplace around you. While this career can help thousands, it could very well be at the cost of one's compassion, or even humanity. Obviously, it's not always the case. There are many doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers who strive for humane kindness being implemented in care. Yet, for every kind worker, there is one who is not so kind. I myself have seen nurses become accustomed to the sound of IV pumps beeping or bed alarms sounding, and some would just let them beep without a second glance. I've even shown some insensitivities in front of patients without even meaning to. BUT we can't forget the mission of health: to HELP humanity, not hurt them further.
I can't believe I've found this film, I watched it when I was a kid and it was the first film I ever cried my eyes out too. I've been looking for it for a while now and here it is!
Beautifully portrayed. For all within the healthcare field, never forget your patients are more than mere numbers on a page, they have lives , hopes , dreams,,,,,regrets. Treat them how you would wish to be treated, we are all just a cell away from where they are...death be not proud, though some have called you mighty............
I couldn't stop crying watching this movie. It makes me remember everything that my sister went through when she had cancer. the. Drs. in this movie were so enethical and did not think about the best. interest of the patient. All they wanted is for themselves.
One of my professors recommended this movie after I mentioned in a final exam in my first year that John Donne's words left me in awe of language. I'm about to graduate now. This is still one of my favourite movies. The beauty in words, the paradoxes of life, the hunger for knowledge, the value of a good teacher, the importance of humanity.
I first saw this in 2001 when l was suffering with an illness that would not be properly diagnosed and effectively treated for another eighteen months. Having made an all but total recovery but still dealing with peripheral issues, l can state unequivocally that viewing this sick and viewing this well gives the entire film layers of different meaning and resonance. Emma Thompson is brilliant.
I can understand the 15 (current) thumbs down. It's a thought-provoking, grave, sad, and painful journey of a disciplined, yet lonesome and fearful soul, who's heading down the dark path to a certain death. It brings us face to face with the reality of just how fragile and close to death we all are. However brilliantly handled the material (and it was), the sinning soul is afraid to die, and meet a holy God. ["Ah. Look at that. A little allegory of the soul; wherever it hides, God will find it."] "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13 "And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." Luke 11:9
This is genius work. It's just so profound... so I don't even have words. It's just such a fine piece of work. Incredible performance by Emma Thompson. I don't get tired of watching it.
This is the 3rd time I've seen this movie in the last ten years. I have to say that the effect the movie has on me has changed very little. There is nothing beautiful in death and Emma Thompson plays this beautifully.
This is one of my all time favourite movies. It actually changed the way I treated the students I used to teach. The scenes with her professor are easily some of the best in the movie. My niece has a copy of The Runaway Bunny and I can't read it to her without thinking of this film. "Ah... Look at that. A little allegory of the soul..." Wit (2001) (TV) Drama [USA:PG-13, 1 h 39 min] Emma Thompson, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Atkins, Audra McDonald Director: Mike Nichols Writers: Margaret Edson, Mike Nichols, Emma Thompson IMDb rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 8.1/10 (6,534 votes) Critical reception: Awards: 2001 Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film (nominated); Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television (nominated) Another 4 wins and 13 nominations
This was an assignment for my English class and I didn't feel much when reading the play itself. But everyone in this did a great job. I bawled my eyes out, it was just so beautiful.
This movie just blew me away. I guess you can a, on the pain that a cancer patient goes through I just felt the tears when he first told her of the type of cancer that she had. And when I hold teacher comes in and I just dropped down to the floor my heart is broken too for the only one who cares about her remember to see her in school that she taught at? Then to find out that she's in the hospital you know what a heart is that. It just tells us that will never be forgotten and we never nose impact we are not want so and other person's life I just give this movie a 10 stars,
This was a good movie. In the end, I really felt for Emma Thompsons' character. She had more emotional vulnerability than anyone around her, except her nurse, and former college professor, recognized. This can't have been easy for Emma's character, in her last days.
This was required viewing and testable material for 3/6 of my nursing courses this semester (Pathophysiology, Health Assessment and Professional Roles). A masterpiece!
Just found this movie on RUclips. When I first saw it on HBO it was like watching myself going through it. I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer when I was 13yrs old. I am now 51 and healthy.
+Christine Daaé Rose kindly email me at josenyo21@gmail.com I help students with quality samples that they can use to write their research papers. Thank you
it is very sad to see health professional's behaved like that.was recomaned by my tutor to watch this movie.really moved me.i was in tears and something in me pained after watching this
At first was mad i had to watch this for class assignment, but as i looked over the assignment i understood the reason for it- communication and interpersonal relations within medical field.... then it changed everything for me... a lesson in humanity and bedside manner....brought me to tears, bravo, this should be a mandatory assignment for all within the medical world! Too many within the field forget the human component of what they do.
Scary to think, isn't it? People have been losing sleep, fretting, obsessing over this same idea for centuries. It's a small consolation to think that, horrible as it is, that fear is the one thing we all share. A preoccupation with death is what we've all got in common.
Yes, me too; if you had managed to keep a dry eye up to that point, this beautiful recitation would have undone you. Such a profound performance with the vital message that human kindness is so key.
HMG00 Me too. Reminded me of sitting by my mother's bedside throughout the last several hours of her waning life. l've never been quite the same since that day, but considering the experience, l wouldn't expect to.
I watched this movie because of an College English class I am taking. It should be mandatory for anyone in the health industry. Bravo Emma your acting is just amazing and brings me to tears!!
This is a great study on poor bedside manor. Medical Professionals should be tested by seeing how many errors and poor manors they can identify. Then they could write suggestions on how to correct the errors.
I first saw movie when it first came out on HBO. I use it to this day (and intend to for quite some time) in my classroom. I teach troubled teens and this is a powerful vehicle for getting them to explore what it means to reconnect to humanity. I could not be more grateful for this production.
Daniel Cambra Oooh, I'm not so sure that that's a good idea, when I saw this when I was around 17 and very depressed this film made me worse along with any other sad films. It made me see how fragile life was and how the only way to end pain is to end life. Mind you I'm grown up now and see it differently, but still every teen will view this film differently too.
I hear you, but I am very mindful of the discussions we have in class. And I am one of those annoying teachers that pause the movie frequently to ask or answer questions. Doing that breaks up the tension normally built by watching it uninterrupted. But I value your concern and insight.
Daniel Cambra Must you pause it. I can see it now all the students welling up at the scene where the professor visits her in hospital and you pause it, "So class can anyone tell me....." lol Mind you when you are down and depressed you really aren't in the mood to watch a cheerful film, when people say oh watch this it'll cheer you up, when you cannot relate to it at all unless it has a depressing undertone. Yes I suppose it would be better to just show melancholic films and discuss them throughout. I don't know I've never been to a troubled teen class nor do I know how they work.
Trust me with one thing....Nothing I do as an educator is accidental. If it does not pass the sniff test, if I have even a moment's hesitation over the appropriateness of a lesson, I don't do it.
i really cried for 30 minutes straight. this was beautiful and heart wrenching. i had to watch this for my AP English summer homework and i'm glad i did because this was absolutely worth the watch. i have a passion for film and this one truly paid justice to the play. i am still sobbing as i type this.
God damn it I ADORE Emma Thompson and this movie. I found it originally as research for a novel and now return to it whenever I need something to play in the background while I write. She never disappoints and this is a work of ART.
Whenever I start to doubt the importance of compassion and therapeutic communication, I come back and watch this movie. Remember that the wrong words, or no words at all, can have a serious impact on the patient and their recovery.
I appreciate the film makers thought who put hardships to enlighten those hidden realities which is only felt by patients and doctors indeed.....such movies are really an eye opener and inspiration for person like me.
recommended during my health research ethics class... watched a small clip as a part of my lecture, which motivated me to watch the full movie. Sad story but reflects the reality of the health care system
I had to watch this movie for my English class, I am in a nursing program and most things we are doing are medical related. This movie moved me so much. In November, i lost my grandmother to a hard-fought battle with cancer. Everytime moment I saw my grandma's face and when Susie was with her I saw my own. I was the one explaining what the doctors were doing. I was the one standing my her through every treatment. I was the one who had care and compassion for her when the doctors only saw the numbers. I was the one who brought up palliative care when grandma "didn't want to be a bother" I honestly don't know how I am going to get through this paper.
I cannot believe I stumbled upon this film! I was diagnosed with Stage 3c high grade serous adenocarcinoma- advanced ovarian cancer. Had surgery, and a total of 9 mos of chemotherapy. I am once year with no evidence of disease. This movie was spot on.
Audra McDonald and Emma Thompson are in a movie as good friends.. AND THEY'RE BOTH GONNA BE IN BEAUTY AND THE BEAST 2017 with EMMA AS MRS POTTS AND AUDRA AS GAR DE ROBE.. UGGGGGHHH MY LIFE IS COMPLETE
Am I the only one that was extremely upset that when he ran out to get the other nurse he touched like every single counter top and door knob. I know it's a movie but like Jesus Christ. Also the disconnect between patient and Doctor relationship is honestly so upsetting to think about. Isn't that the primary purpose in healthcare? To care for and aid for people in there worst state and to wish nothing but the best for them?
That's his character though. It shows you how frivolous he is. It shows you what his interest is. He's careless. All he does is complain about how the little things are troublesome for him to finish his duties to get to where he wants to be. Best example, or the most overt example, is the scene where he's supposed to suit up but doesn't do it because his superior didn't. He thinks he's superior already. "She's research".
This film won 3 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Single Camera Picture Editing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special, Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special and Outstanding Made for Television Movie.
+Adam Smith But Judy Davis has better acting in Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows than Emma Thompson in Wit. Emma Thompson has already won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series playing Herself on Ellen: Emma. The Emmy voters has the opinion and so do I, too.
Watched it for Nursing in Ethics class and have to write an analysis paper. Wow, such a unique look at cancer though the eyes of the patient who is truly suffering through treatment.
Who else needs to write an essay on this film?

I cried so much...When Professor Ashford says, "It's time to go. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest" I just lose it and start sobbing. No film has ever touched me in this way.
Jen Smedley me too. every time, no matter what else is going on....same reaction.
Jen Smedley I spent half of it crying, but lost it exactly at that scene
I lost it around the time Emma Thompsons' character finally did. Her situation was REALLY tough, I imagine.
"And may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest " is Shakespeare , so it refers back to the previous joke at the start (the only intimacy between her and Ashford)
" this is not the modern novel ...I suggest you go in for shakespeare ". (and theres a smile)

But this isn't even about what clinicians THINK patients need and want.... it's clearly about what the clinicians need and want.

A physician is not a psychologist but everyone is a human-being and that is something nobody should forget because death is a fact for everybody!
I started tearing up as I was watching this. Vivian would insist that there is no crying in the library, but it could not be helped.
Honestly, for the last ~10 minutes, I just sobbed almost nonstop. And even now, as I'm writing this, I'm trying to make myself stop crying for the second time... This play is the reason I appreciate John Donne tremendously. He is one of my all-time favorite poets and this play is partially to blame for that
I first saw this in 2001 when l was suffering with an illness that would not be properly diagnosed and effectively treated for another eighteen months. Beautifully done. A reminder to all of us that kindness, simple decent ordinary kindness, means so much.
emma is beyond amazing here! she deserved an oscar! :)
She unfortunately wasn't eligible for that because it aired on HBO so it was a TV movie and not a theatrical movie. :(
emma thompson an oscar winner, such brilliant act. saving mr. banks made me want to watch Ms. emma thompson more.

A masterpiece.
This is a beautiful adaptation of my favourite theatre play. I’m very grateful for this.

I was the one explaining what the doctors were doing. I was the one standing my her through every treatment. I was the one who had care and compassion for her when the doctors only saw the numbers. I was the one who brought up palliative care when grandma "didn't want to be a bother" I honestly don't know how I am going to get through this paper.
wooow she couldn't have acted any better... a very heart wrenching movie to watch about the reality of cancer
Great sadness for the patient in today's world
I cannot believe I stumbled upon this film! I was diagnosed with Stage 3c high grade serous adenocarcinoma- advanced ovarian cancer. Had surgery, and a total of 9 mos of chemotherapy. I am once year with no evidence of disease. This movie was spot on.
I shall become a doctor... I shall save so many lives; and one day...I shall say I saw a film that made me believe in it.
Are you a doctor yet?
Needed to watch this film for a class discussion on ethics in research. Thank you for posting this HD video.

this was a class assignment for me but im glad i watched it instead of reading it. Great play!
I watched this play for school, I completely zoned out. I find out that I'm supposed to write a 6 page critique on it. So here I am.
+Bradley McCartney hi buddy. its My homework how.can u plase send me the critique yolu Wrote there?
Bradley McCartney hoping you've reexamined it with a fresh perspective and open mind.
Cynthia Lyman I ended up watching the play at a local theatre and I loved it! It was very emotional and powerful. Absolutely loved it.
Yes, it's a gem.
... and the Runaway Bunny. So sweet.
Emma Thompson's performance is impeccable
+Yvonne Ho how she didnt win an Emmy for this one...cannot belive..
Absolutely stunning
That was beautiful!
this is amazing!!!!! im crying so hard!!!!
She is a Dr. of philosophy? Oh man I'm going to tear into the writing on her attitude on suffering for my essay.
Who on earth voted this down?
This film won 3 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Single Camera Picture Editing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special, Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special and Outstanding Made for Television Movie.
+jwelch5742 Emma Thompson was robbed for not winning the actress award :o)
+Adam Smith But Judy Davis has better acting in Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows than Emma Thompson in Wit. Emma Thompson has already won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series playing Herself on Ellen: Emma. The Emmy voters has the opinion and so do I, too.
have to watch this for my nursing course
My all time favorite play
Watched it for Nursing in Ethics class and have to write an analysis paper. Wow, such a unique look at cancer though the eyes of the patient who is truly suffering through treatment.
