October Sky builds a quiet symphony around a particularly potent memory of Yebba’s mother-a high school science teacher who sometimes brought home the bottle rockets her students had constructed for class. “I wrote this whole story about remembering her sliding down the hall and telling us ‘Come outside we’re shooting off bottle rockets,’” Yebba explains. “That memory came to me and the words just spilled out: this story of her and the promise that she broke, in a way, because she killed herself in October. I genuinely feel like she was standing there in the room with me as I was writing it, in my studio apartment in Brooklyn.”

And to give more insight -- her mother committed suicide so knowing that you can hear the emotion more clearer and it gives a better understanding as to who she is a person and artist.

The magic with yebba is her vocal agility, she allows her to go into all registers, she is a virtuoso of notes.
Beyond the pure technique, it is the emotion conveyed in his songs that touches us, to me it touches me.
Well done for your comments and clarifications ... And we look forward to yebba's album.

Really intriguing song, I really loved how she handled the phrase October Sky that first time. I could see the rocket going up. She is painting pictures with words and the video is helping to illuminate the story being told. Yebba's mother was mentally ill and committed suicide. You can feel the anguish in her cries after mentioning her mother. Those rockets keep shooting up and falling.
Yebba has won a Grammy I think a few years ago.

I am OBSESSED with Yebba! I have listened to her new album on repeat to and from work and then again when I get there since the day it was released. Whenever I get into my RUclips scrolling phase, I look for people’s reactions to her genius just to see what their take is and how they feel about her artistry and it confirms how great she is for me all over again. I usually watch the reactions and maybe like one every once in awhile. But you are the one I have subscribed to! The way you’ve described it all is so right so supporting your channel was easy to do! You’re fabulous and you look beautiful doing it! 💜 (And if you haven’t watched her Tiny Desk, stop what you’re doing and watch it immediately!)

Yebba has, since 2016, done quite a lot of collaborations... duets, back up, with everyone from Mark Ronson to Ed Sheeran to Mumford and Son... She has a video with Snoop Dog. She won a Grammy (which doesn’t necessarily gain you fans). She’s just coming into her own. She’s young. 26 I think. She’s gaining attention. Her first album drops next month, which this gorgeous song is on. Don’t worry, she’s doing well.
Thanks for reacting to this song/video: it’s so beautiful and you helped me understand her vocal abilities.

Her mother committed suicide in October and this song provides a memory of her shooting bottle rockets and telling Abbey (yebba's real name) and her brother to come outside and watch. She wants around in town and thinks of that time and that she shoots bottle rockets almost as high as her spirit flies above. Such beatiful song writing and singing. If you were listening closer she quoted the Heart song "Alone" as her bridge into the final part of the conclusion. I love this girl's voice. So awesome that she's finally getting some really top end work. She deserves it more than most "singers" in the billboard radio charts.

She said after her song "MY MIND" she took her life.
Her mom could sing as well .. very talented family.
    SO SAD
One week after the SoFar show, one that would set her professional career in motion, Smith's mother tragically took her own life in her family's West Memphis home. In the aftermath, Abbey changed her name to Yebba (i.e., Abbey spelled backwards, one of her mom's nicknames for her).

If you are looking for other artists who are up and coming, please consider Spencer Day. He's incredible. He was asked to write a song for a James Bond movie and he wrote "Mystery of You" which charted and made it on the commercial radio stations. Another song was chosen for the movie, "Skyfall" by Adele.
He covered "High Hopes" with Post Modern Jukebox and he writes lots of original stuff. "Chateau Marmont" is one of my favorites- it's a haunting song just like the hotel.
