The death of Ace has easily made me cry the most, from Ace realizing he deserves to live, to Luffys emotional breakdown and being unable to process he couldn't save his brother
Yeah - it is one of the few death scenes in media that can really fuck you up. For obvious reasons, won't say the other top two that I have in mind because spoilers, but it is one of the strong ones.
This is THE MOST IMPORTANT development for the Strawhats and Oda handled it perfectly. In the span of 3 days, Luffy was forcefully made to understand his standing in the world, he was just a frog in a well. He lost his crewmates, he lost his chance to break his brother free from prison and had to sacrifice a friend just to get out, and he had to feel his brother's last breath on his shoulder, just because he was not strong enough. The Strawhats, on the other hand, realize that all of them had themselves saved by Luffy, but none of them were strong enough to be there when he was at his lowest. All of them realize what Rayleigh meant by saying, "We were too hasty in our journey"
it took 2 days being traveled by Kuma from Sabaody to Amazon Lily and the moment Luffy knew about Ace it's around 6 days before execution, so right it's safe to assume that there's 10 days gap between Sabaody and Marineford
I was so happy when Luffy, despite all the obstacles in his way, finally managed to rescue Ace. You think everything will be fine from there on and just 1 episode later your heart gets ripped out. It's hard to even describe in words how much I cried over Ace's death. Especially the voice acting in this scene was so outstanding, that it will leave you in despair 😭😭
Damn Jinbe's such a badass. One of my favorite moments is Garp saying "You better keep holding me down like that Sengoku! Because if you don't, I will kill Sakazuki!" so damn awesome. But then we follow it up with Luffy's crying, it's legitimately heart wrenching.
Yes. He didn't go through a heartbreaking separation from the crew, survived the maiden island of Kuja led by a Warlord who despises men, infiltrated the world's most secured prison Impel Down where he lost 10 years of his lifespan AND his nakama Bon Clay, participated in a war where he is clearly outmatched by a considerable number of power players, lost some more years after another shot of adrenaline just ONLY to lose Ace right there in his arms. You tell me a series set up this war for 4 arcs about rescuing the MC's brother only to have him killed during the climax and I wouldn't believe you. Oda went mad genius when he was planning this whole storyline in which may I add he thought as a "side story."
I was there as it came out each week in the manga. There were a lot of heated discussions on whether he'd save ace or not. Since Oda hadn't committed to the death of a character yet outside of flashbacks, we couldn't see him going through with it. Especially with all the build up and struggle and sacrifice. Oda wasn't that cruel...right? So we get to the point he gets saved. Yay. But there were still worries, since they had to get away from the war. Maybe a horrid injury? If there was gonna be anyone dying for once, it was most likely whitebeard. But not Ace, surely. So yeah. I just remember everyone losing their minds when Ace got killed. It was still hard to believe it was permanent until the funeral. (spoiler) Actually, I think there was still some hope around all the way to dressrosa. But that arc completely confirmed it. (unless of course the df was a copy like with the fish fruit model dragon. Doffy had it after all and was working with Kaido, thus vegapunk. Only way I could see Oda getting away with bringing him back there)
I got spoiled on this years before I even started watching the show....and I really wish I hadn't been. Also, this is a moment I have to give to the English Dub. The sobbed out "Thank you....for loving me." Hit me 500× harder. Ace's dub actor KILLED the lines.
Same here I always knew Ace was gonna die from the donut memes. But the way Oda did it was written so well killed me. I literally cried for like an hour dehydrated and shit.
What gets to me about this scene is how fragile Luffy's voice sounds when he's in denial of Ace not making it. Then, he tries to bargain, becomes angry, and finally he becomes histerycal when Ace finally dies. First time we see Luffy overcome with such emotions in the whole story. Iconic.
Just to see things from Ace's perspective and why he couldn't ignore Akainu's taunts. Aside from being a hothead to begin with Ace has gone his entire life feeling hated for who his father is. He's constantly had to deal with worries that he wasn't worthy of other's love because of his bloodline. And then Whitebeard not only knows about Ace's parentage but cared about him and accepted him as family regardless of it. So Akainu wasn't simply badmouthing Ace's captain. He was insulting one of the most precious people in Ace's life. Imagine the most important person in your life, imagine they have basically saved you from yourself and given you a reason to keep living and feel loved. And now have some prick trying to tear that person down in front of you. No falling for Akainu's taunts wasn't smart but I can absolutely understand why Ace did.
The last and most devastating example of what started in Sabaody: Luffy isn’t strong enough. The world is bigger than him. Actual heartbreak rewatching this because of how upbeat Luffy normally is. RIP Fire Fist.
man this was the first time I rly got broken whilst watching one piece, Ace was one of my favourite characters and I was hoping to see him be their for the whole journey.......well R.I.P Ace
Yeah oda likes to just toss in what seems to be throw away lines like that only for that line to end up being one of the most significant lines in that moment and we just never realize it lol.
Ho boy... I'm pretty sure we got another addition to the mob of people who wants to walk up to Akainu and pummel him into the ground until his magma is nothing but molten paste. Myself firmly included.
ace's death was a important part of luffy's journey to grow as a person , he needed that breakdown to realize that he wasn't yet strong enough to go to the new world , the powerful enemies he encountered in marine ford showed up really good the gap that he need to fill with his crew through the time skip to train and become stronger , even kizaru did forshadow it earlier while kicking luffy , and he told him that all "you have luffy is guts and courage , if you're not strong enough , you can't save anyone no matter how hard you try or how resolved you are" , although i didnt understand a particular scene where jimbei told luffy that he's at his limit and he can't keep fighting , they showed up jimbei to be very close to luffy , then suddeny they show again the area around luffy was empty and no one was there to interfere with akainu's attack ,which i found pretty weird
back in the day, before this chapter dropped, the fandom had a saying: no one dies in one piece, except in flash backs. and oda set it up like that. we all knew pell surviving was bullshit and we all heard that oda didn't like killing off characters. so we all thought ace was gonna be fine. and then this happens. oda killed off one of the most popular characters in the story and it destroyed luffy. and there would be no last second resurrection.
One of the things that has always kept me on Anime since i first discovered it in the late 80s, is the powerful storytelling, The Japanese dont shy away from trauma, emotion twists and in many of the genres you never get a feeling that any character (or very few) is safe from dying, this adds to the tension and suspense. in the 4 part story structure common to the Japanese tradition Kishōtenketsu this is the Tenku or the twist which causes the story to turn course. The thing i find fascinating about one piece is that a lot of events revolve around the Hubris of different characters which triggers tragedy. We can track this in part to Luffy saying he wont rescue ACE because it would upset him to have Luffy do so and its not likely too bad (back at the end of Thriller Bark, which we see the flashback of)
I’m more upset about the fact that I didn’t feel as much emotion during this scene the first time I watched at because of two reasons: 1. I was binging the series so I didn’t really have the build up of waiting week after week for this climax and 2. I was spoiled and knew about Ace’s death long before I started watching, so it didn’t hit as hard as it would have if I was not in the know. Still, it’s a very raw, emotional scene at it still does get me now that lots of things have sunk in
This scene and the scene where garp just sat right next to him in the platform and another scene after this one together with 2 other scenes from the Wano arc truly broke me.Spoiler warning! The scenes I'm taking about are white beards death and Roger and odens death those really hit hard we knew Roger was gonna die but when we got a bit of backstory from him from odens adventures truly is saddening.
This episode alone caused me to dropped One Piece for about 4 years, my heart was so destroyed back then 😅 It just shows how powerful Oda's storytelling skill is. 🔥🔥🔥
This hit me so different when I had depression but even now years later I watched it so many times I lost count and I still either tear up or cry every time.
Fans sometimes complained no one died in One Piece in current timeline. I wanted to say that, those would regret to complain that. I never wanted anyone died after this painful character lost.
Saboady and Summit War has been heartbreaking .It is like it is a waking up call for Luffy and the gang that they really need to get stronger Yeah Akainu is really good at this taunting and manipulation thing. also 9:40 o_o
Even though I understand Garp’s position and don’t agree with his decision, he’s still one of my favorite characters in the show and I got chills when he went to kill sakazuki .. I even started crying .. and I can’t wait to cry again when he goes back to Luffy’s hometown ..
the denial from Luffy was rough. him begging Ivan-chan to help when all he's powers can do is change the body, not preform such a miracle of regrowing organs and skin...
one piece is one of very few shows to make me cry and its done it at least once every other arc. this one had me actually sobbing into my pillow the first time i watched it.
I've rewatched One Piece several times, just now thinking about rewatching it in people's reactions and this is the first time I really cried in this episode 🥲
(First of all, this is not a spoiler, just an observation) From here ahead, the opponents and villains in One Piece are going to get even more and more powerful, and the Admirals will still be at a higher level. And it's good to remember that it has already been said that Garp was Roger's rival when Roger was still alive, and Roger was superior to Whitebeard in his Prime. That is, it is common sense to think that Garp is leagues above Akaino, even if he is old and far from his prime. Which means, if Sengoku hadn't stopped Garp, he would have actually killed Akainu with his bare hands, without any difficulty. And no, this is not a spoiler.
Ace had to died to bring a change to series, but the way he died was stupid for some people. But let me ask you. What would happen if someone insult one of your parents?
I had more or less just started One Piece, got to 100 episodes and loved Ace immediately. One day I came home from school and despite it spoiling me I watched the episodes on TV. Well it was Episode 482 and 483. Well my favorite character died in what should have been a nice little distraction from school. Let's just say I cried a lot.
Rewatching this with the fact that Akainu is voiced by thesame guy that voices hasegawa from Gintama in mind makes it kinda hard to take his words seriously 😂😂😂😂
Yeah this 180 in only one episode or couple of chapters was something no one saw coming when they premiered. Also Ace was the first on screen death in the series

Bro I went to a severe depression man I had to stop and take break for months. This show man!!!
@@Chemist123 I had to take a break as well, man it hurt
Yeah - it is one of the few death scenes in media that can really fuck you up. For obvious reasons, won't say the other top two that I have in mind because spoilers, but it is one of the strong ones.
It broke me when Ace said his only regret is that he won't see Luffy fulfill his dreams.
Yeah bro this death fucked me up for weeks

rayleigh said it about the upcoming of joyboy not about this scene
it took 2 days being traveled by Kuma from Sabaody to Amazon Lily and the moment Luffy knew about Ace it's around 6 days before execution, so right it's safe to assume that there's 10 days gap between Sabaody and Marineford
well put
"That is my desire to see you fulfill your dream" HOLY SHIT that line means so much and it just destroyed me

Wait . . .
I thought it was Ace that had his heart ripped out?
That "you promised me you will never die" gets me everytime dude....
Doesnt matter how many years has passed or how many times I've seen these scenes.. It still hurts every time I watch it.. ugh..
Not every story has a happy ending 😭😭
But have epic ending like this arc
Tru asf just like marineford
This one will, just not right now. I fucking love this message so much my all time favorite arc

Whitebeard being a real one. Being a father to those who didn't have one. What a great guy he was
Same here. I would’ve reacted the same way
The last and most devastating example of what started in Sabaody: Luffy isn’t strong enough. The world is bigger than him.

Actually started from Thriller Bark. Moria's speech. Underrated arc.
@@misteryio3990 yea he was actually foreshadowing how the new world would break them which people from there did.

This was my second. My first was when Yusuke fought Sensui...
Powerful deaths...

U also See in the Flashback where luffy and ace take thier Sake of the shadow of another cup
Here it folks. The episode we've all been waiting for
nope episode 486 and 487 :D
I think you misspelled 'Dreading'
Ho boy... I'm pretty sure we got another addition to the mob of people who wants to walk up to Akainu and pummel him into the ground until his magma is nothing but molten paste. Myself firmly included.
Saddest death( for me) in anime history, I still tear up no matter how many times I watch this
Its up there for me.
Its only competition really is Genkai in the dark tourniment of yuyu hakusho
M not gonna cry I've watched this hundred times
Dude tears rolls down mine too. Why op is too damn good at making people cry
Been waiting for this episode fax. Glad we made it here. Rip Ace.
Congratulations you’ve officially started onepiece
No Super Sayian, no Kyubi, no Hollow form...
Just a broken boy who lost his big brother.
This is where we learn why Oda is so hesitant to kill characters. He's to good at making it hurt.
I cried with you brotha .. this really hits hard for me cause I lost my big brother irl one piece will forever be the great anime ever
Luffy has been receiving Ls back and forth since sabaody. There is no way he will lose again here in Marineford right?
Oda: ...
Oda: Those were not Ls. THIS is an L.
you are never broken until you are broke financially - Lil Ching 2020
Ace and whitebeards dreams intertwined. Ace wanted to be loved, and whitebeards wanted a family. Literally perfect for each other.
ace's death was a important part of luffy's journey to grow as a person , he needed that breakdown to realize that he wasn't yet strong enough to go to the new world , the powerful enemies he encountered in marine ford showed up really good the gap that he need to fill with his crew through the time skip to train and become stronger , even kizaru did forshadow it earlier while kicking luffy , and he told him that all "you have luffy is guts and courage , if you're not strong enough , you can't save anyone no matter how hard you try or how resolved you are" , although i didnt understand a particular scene where jimbei told luffy that he's at his limit and he can't keep fighting , they showed up jimbei to be very close to luffy , then suddeny they show again the area around luffy was empty and no one was there to interfere with akainu's attack ,which i found pretty weird

Man ive watched this scene for numerous times and it still makes me cry. No shame. No shame at all.
It will never not hurt to re-watch this, never.
I trusted Oda when he said he won't kill off any characters before timeskip. Ace's death really got me

One piece always plays with our emotions
I'm glad you did these two together... that cliffhanger would have been rough when watching week to week.

This scene hurts even more now from stuff in later arcs

I have watched/read this masterpiece for many many years. I absolutely love OP. Even still, many years later this exact moment breaks me everytime
That was pretty suprising, that Akainu guy really has always an Ace around his sleeve...
Fans sometimes complained no one died in One Piece in current timeline. I wanted to say that, those would regret to complain that. I never wanted anyone died after this painful character lost.
We all lost our brother Ace when we saw this for the first time I don’t think it’s possible to watch and not atleast tear up
Saboady and Summit War has been heartbreaking .It is like it is a waking up call for Luffy and the gang that they really need to get stronger
Yeah Akainu is really good at this taunting and manipulation thing.

So the feeling can really be felt in this reaction
The fact that Oda rarely kills characters makes deaths like this THAT much more impactful.
With one piece we had our happy moments, sad moments, hype moments, etc moments. Its been a journey thats for sure.
Yo, I like the way Oda actually told us "Ya. Pirates can actually die young".
"... That f*cking destroyed me." Yeah. Yeah, it did.
The saddest death that everybody makes cry
The intro for this arc Is a tear jerker once you know what happens.

This fucked me up too. First time anime got to me like that. There is a couple of wild episodes coming now as well.
welcome to donut gang fax 😂

Garp going after Akainu gives me chills everytime!! 😱🥹
Gonna cry again when dadan met garp later 😢
the death of ace was sad, but luffys breakdown was heartbreaking

You’ll have to come back to this scene after a flashback later on. 😢
Thankyou for the 2 episodes❤️
Huh wonder what people felt when this was released and having to wait a whole week after.
Yeah this 180 in only one episode or couple of chapters was something no one saw coming when they premiered. Also Ace was the first on screen death in the series
We came here to cry with you buddy 😢
26:00 newgate didnt say a word. How did ace heard him though? Ace heard him with his gift to hear the voice of all things.
"Absolute Justice" should be more of a crime then being a Pirate!
On my journey I was already spoiled about the death but without context it didn’t really mean much. Until…he’s actually freed and I thought it was a lie and then this happened. It still hit the same way, that shit hurts and poor Luffy 😭
Even if I’ve watched it hundreds of time… Ace death still making me cry. It so hard to watch MarineFord arc because of this and the roller coasters of emotion…
Ah yes,
_hello darkness my old friend_
_I've come to talk with you again_
Still tearing up going through it again

Damn you oda!! This is my 8x watching One Piece and I'm still crying in every fcking sad story.
1000th time I cry watching this episode.
ahh as always misery loves company.. i aint gonna lie, i was waiting for this and it was worth it.
To quote Krillon from dbza:
"Aaaand now you're one of us."
Just oda giving the characters movements so much emotions what a God
every time i see this moment in manga or in anime i'm crying. this time too
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭It really hurts. I cry no matter how many times I watch it.💔
one piece hits different
Be prepared to be crying like, the next 10 episodes still lol
i guess everyone feels with you, i think most of us sawing that cried
Love how this wasn’t spoiled for you cuz this is the most spoiled moment in one piece
that was a sad day im sure it hit hard for everone
Man even rewatching it has got me crying. I love Ace and the whole way they do his death hurts so bad for me man. OOF
"What else could f. happen after this?" Oh well...

I Still remember the day i first saw it i was crying horribly for so long. Even though i have watched it few times i cry every time even now 😂
