I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.
Hey Matt, So, after all these years are you happy with your dog holes being on the third board over? I see a lot of build videos that place the dog holes on the second board and they all state "you want them near the front edge". Was your placement a trade-off between dog hole placement and hounds tooth tenon functionality? Are the dog holes working fine that far from the front edge? Thoughts?
The end cap serves a purpose for installing the wagon vice, but why did you make it stretch across the full width of the bench? If you plan on adding the tool rest/ planing stop you have made it more difficult to remove or turn that. And leaving the tops fully separate would surely have been even better in coping with wood movements?
I'm so extremely jealous of you matt, I myself am a novice but aspiring woodworker whose only tools are in an American public school were I share the tools I use with hundreds of kids. who 8 out of every 10 of which are either idiots, don't care about the work and therefore the tools, or are just taking the class for the easy art credit... So the progress on my projects is usually slow going and tend to have more hiccups due to my fellow classmates than due to me. But that's neither here nor there I enjoy your videos and you do beautiful work, I hope to one day be able to do the things you are now able to do.
Hey Matt, how are you liking the benchcrafted hardware? I'm building my roubo right now, and I'm trying to decide which brand of vise hardware to purchase.
Wait. Are you saying that a threaded insert is more proper than tapping threads into wood, or is bench crafted recommending a lag bolt? Fantastic bench. It’s fun to see the contrast of your seemingly laid back personality blended into the precision with which you obviously strive for (and achieve). Not to mention the accent - we colonists are suckers for a good accent.
Hey Matt, Just out of curiosity could you tell me the details of the drill guide you showed in this video and what you think of it? Been looking for a decent one for ages - can only find really cheap rubbish ones with too much play to do anything accurate. Cheers
You should have left the knot in the walnut for character.... personally I hate walnut but it looks like an interesting piece... where do you get your wood mate? I’m uk based too?
Beautiful work, but, I wonder if you wanted to make this work bench and you did not have access to the tools available at the school would you have been able to make it with say just a drill, a circular saw and a bunch of hand tools like say screw drivers, chisels etc. I am sure a lot of viewers if they had access to the tools and say about an hour on how to use those tools would be able to make something if they have the plans to make it. I would like to see how a skilled wood worker as yourself shows how to do things with the tools the average joe may be lucky to have. Making things with Festools or fine Japanese chisels or having a drill press/table saw etc one would imagine should be easier. Not sure if this can be done in general.
it can be done. it will only take a ton of patience. And you can probably simplify some steps, like using simpler joinery and such. And don't forget, tons and tons of patience and time.
nice video matt looking at building the same bench my self could you send me the links for the bench craft vices and also the festool 1400 looking good don't do like l did and drop it because my router is at festool in Saxham in suffolkat the moment £200 Bill loving your videos anb enjoying your sence of humour
Ooooo that's a costly one! The Benchcrafted hardware can be purchased from here: www.classichandtools.com/acatalog/BenchCrafted.html If you happen to buy them, in the checkout there will be a box asking 'where you heard about us'. If you could put my name in there it would be great! Thank you and best of luck with yours!
this is gonna sound really picky but i keep thinking it in these videos. Why the fart noise when your social media pops up? everything else is really nice with the music and everything and then an occasional fart noise :D just thought i'd say. other then that, love the videos!
Haha no worries, it's all feedback! I'm still trying to find my style of editing so I'm just messing around and seeing what works. Glad everything else is all good though!
Nice job, but 99% of RUclips home-made videos (you are not alone) make the mistake of the background music being too loud compared to the voice-over. Turn up the volume to hear the voice, have to turn it down when it's just music. And thanks for not recording the sound of the drills, etc., I shouldn't have to wear hearing protecting while watching a carpentry video.

Every time you slap the bench I get so excited. It never gets old.
Haha that's great to hear! It was good fun editing that intro, thank you!
Thanks for the great tutorial on your videos ! At age of over 50, I truly appreciate your skills. A new subscriber!
I would not want to go near it with tools.!! So beautiful and elegant....
Glad I found this, I just got my Benchcrafted leg vice today. Great work mate

Fair point, I just preferred the look of a full length end cap!
Matt, does the tail vice require an endcap? Could you simply have extended the top to compensate for the lack of endcap and drilled into end grain?
Nice work sir please keep it up
No despair for me. I love long videos. Feature length? I’m in!
Great job!

It look like furniture for my living room
Thank you for good work and detailed video. Could you tell please what kind of wood did you use on the main parts of the table? Is it oak?
It's ash
Hi Matt, where did you get the M12 inserts from please?
Great work on the bench, what brand of hardware did you use?
Hey Matt, how are you liking the benchcrafted hardware? I'm building my roubo right now, and I'm trying to decide which brand of vise hardware to purchase.
Oh man I have a benchcrafted review video ready to release. I’ll try and get it ready to go sometime next week!
Awesome, I'll keep an eye out for it.

How many hours, start to finish do you think you put into this bench?
“Your carcass is a wonderland”
Sorry if this has been asked, but can you please tell where you purchased your tail vise?
Never mind. Found it. Benchcrafted. Wow what a price, but in my wish list!
Hello! My name is Carlos, I'm from Brazil, I would like to know what kind of wood is the one you used on the sides of the bench!

LOL, I noticed that too, at first I just thought one got away from him.
Haha, I thought it was my dog when I was watching.
I enjoy the farts
Where can i find that tail vise
Hello Matt,
Do you have this Workbenches for sale? if yes please give me the website or other contacts to purchase one thanks.
Not gonna lie I feel like a screw half that radius could take enough tension to snap the vice jaws off.
Sounds like facebook farted at 15:52, lol.
F-clamps axminster model?
Yep! Work brilliantly and cheaper than Besseys!
those are re-branded Besseys. these are (were) the older Bessey UniKlamps. the barcode on the handle give away them being Bessey as well.
