Strava has just announced a slate of updates at their annual Camp Strava event, where they show off a bunch of newness. This years event is the first time new CEO, Michael Martin, is at the helm, after starting back January - and he appears very keen to say ‘there’s a new sheriff in town’. And I’ll give them credit, their little 82 second teaser video is hilariously well done - it’s simply their CEO sitting there, reading mean social media comments…and agreeing to them!
In total, there’s a slate of things coming, some more concrete - and some a bit more fuzzy. Here’s the quick-hit list, and then I’ll dive into the nuances a bit more down below:
- Adding new family plan for up to four family or friends in a group (except, the pricing is TBD)
- Adding mobile app ‘Dark Mode’
- Adding night heat maps to show which routes are better/safer for night workouts
- Adding new quick edit feature to edit workout details
- Adding new "Athlete Intelligence" feedback, akin to basic coaching feedback on activities
- Adding "AI-Enabled Leaderboard Integrity” to sniff out improbable uploads
All of these things are coming from what Strava says is a revamped development process within the company, with them specifically saying its using an "updated design system, an initiative that is integral in driving a heightened pace of product innovation at the company."

But what i really need is “should be at work mode” which hides the time of my activities so i cannot get fired 🤣
If your boss is checking you out on Strava to make sure you are working, then you really need a new job 😉
I'm sure you've seen by now that this is actually one of the upcoming options: hiding the start time of activities via the new Quick Edit!
Like Ray said. Set the default to private then make them public if you want
@@CRcyclistWell, when I get an update because a colleague has completed a ride and I was trying to contact him through teams... Not ideal! So you should be able to put it in "private mode" and hide that.
I work at a cycling company and do not want colleagues in my Strava circle for that reason. If they introduce "specific hours" or "Hide activities for certain riders", then my network will grow by at least triple the size.
They need to make the privacy settings dependent on type of exercise.
I don’t want my gym sessions public and no one cares - enable us to just make gym or any other specific exercise automatically go private while say something like running can stay public
That would actually be pretty cool!
Agree, but ActivityFix gets close to this (able to mute stuff according to rules)
I agree. I do a lot of stuff that I don't want others to see to not fill their feed with activities that only matter to me.
I just have all activities on private mode and then I share only what I want to. Works for me.
@@michaeltheunissen609 yes please don't make it complicated...
I would REALLY love to see Strava have their own version of "Training Plans", where Strava can plan your workouts for you depending on your current workload, fatigue and fitness levels etc. and recommend a daily workout for you and added to daily workout planner. The workout should then be pushed and sync to local device to be used onto your preferred platform, like Suunto, Garmin or Yahoo for example. Perhaps something that is customizable depending what your goals are etc.
YES PLEASE, strava do this!!
Most watches will do that by the time Strava gets to it... (Garmin already does).
@@RealFrenchWill Sure - Garmin is there already... but not all 🙂
5:15 - agree. I do the same for years already: All private by default. And after uploading photos, giving name, description, cutting the track if needed - i open it for everyone.
"They don't actually know what is going to cost yet". Big throwback to one of the greatest DCR videos ever about Strava not knowing their own prices. Ever. 😅
The account sharing also reminds me from what Netflix did and encouraged years ago. Let's hope it's not their tactic to lure people in and screw them the same way by not allowing sharing anymore somewhere in the future.
I canceled my Strava after DCR came out with his video last year on the bs cost increase.
@@dcfan40I got rid of premium or whatever it’s called when they raised the price super high. No thanks.
As a software engineer it's crazy that dark mode is a big feature. Some android phones can do this like 80% fine automatically when Strava hasn't even implemented it yet.
It’s been an OS level feature on iOS for 7 years maybe. Every other app supports it out of the box. Baffling omission, which is why people are so annoyed by the lack of progress.
I was thinking the same. Dark Mode should have been a change log line item six years ago.
@@gplama exactly
But.. Gotta also say that their API for devs is very good and they seem to never have bugs virtually. So high quality standards it would seem which costs more time obviously.
I love it for my phone. But have never used Strava as my bike computer. It’s surprisingly hilarious they never had for company who’s pay sub and free ad littered ap makes a lot of cash for them. It’s so popular as well.
Friends privacy circle, so when friends meet up and ride from their house it also starts their start location, rather than having to remind people NOT to start and end their Garmin at your house. There, said it.
To be fair i'm liking the recent changes strava did to their iOS app visually. It's getting there. I'd love strava to bump up their training analysis game to a level of Trainingpeaks or so so it's a one stop shop for all things sport related
They could start by using a 7 day window instead of telling me every Monday that "my activity level is lower than usual". Yeah DUH ....
@@irfuel lmao that’s too accurate
Woah. DC is clearly excited/amped up and animating/gesturing/moving like never before. Such enthusiasm.
well, he got a sponsor
Wow. I might actually come back to Strava. Nice to see a new CEO actually care about what the users want
Waiting patiently for... "We've added these features! Also... price increase."
The price was already crazy high. Higher? lol.
"Also, we're going to claw back 1 or 2 more features back behind the paywall"
That's what I was thinking. And hey you do not like it, find 3 more people willing to join the family plan so you can save. Smart or evil you pick.
Wondering - but for real - why a dark mode has a top priority in an app like Strava. It's like saying, the most important part on my 5k bike is the color of the bottle...
You’ve clearly never spoken to any serious roadie 🤣
Yeah this has never really been something to bother me either. It's not like I'm looking at Strava during my ride or endlessly scrolling through Strava before bed.
It's an absolute nothing burger and I'm a bit frustrated that they are acting all high and mighty about it. Dropping it as a surprise update would've been nice but this is a bit cringe I'm not going to lie. There are a bunch of features I'd be more interested in and for Strava to elevate from a souped up riding journal to an actual training tool for me there's a long way to go. Golden cheetah and trainingpeaks all the way. Strava for the social aspect. Dark mode? Not even in the top 5 for me
@@xAudiolith It's become a meme I think
Great stuff as usual! Love your channel 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
how about mimicking the same type of run/bike thats being imported from garmin? ie if its interval it should be shown as an interval and not just a single run.
How this took so long for them to acknowledge let alone implement is mind boggling.
I know you're just hoping to get in Mike's next video but you're too late so you can quit your whining already
@@geoffgoldplum1231 you ok bro?
@@geoffgoldplum1231 If you can take peoples money you sure as hell can take their criticism too. Now you stop whining.
Kind of funny that the CEO calls Strava out on Dark Mode, which is nice and all that, but really - How long have people been asking for Strava to fix the Leaderboards. There is not one popular segment near me that doesn't have obvious problems. And not just with KOMs. That was one of the main reasons I dropped Strava. Well that and the inability to compare/race against age groups other than your actual age group. It became obvious when I turned 70 and pretty much had the fastest time on every segment for my age group, not because I am so fast but there just are not many over-70s on Strava. And just racing against all ages, that is only fun if you want to always lose. I doubt they will change that for me but if they really fix the leaderboards, I'll come back.
Yeah, for whatever reason the internet really rally's around Dark Mode. It's the most easily meme'able thing. That said, their press release actually led with the AI cheating/leaderboard thing.
Dark mode! Wow, finally Strava has arrived in modern times. So much campaigning went into this
All I wanted was to add two or more shoes to a run!
Thanks Ray. Best regards Martin
Remember when Strava was only dark mode?
Three things come to mind:
1) are your three friends Des, Shane, and The Girl?
2) has someone convinced Strava there is a difference between rounding and truncation?
3) a somewhat tech-savvy company has trouble with Livestream?
Thanks as always for a great vid.
As an older rider, bring on Age. Group KOMs please
I love this!!! Or at least a pro and amateur k/qom leaderboard!!’
This already kind of exists. There are age leaderboards. But you don’t get a crown.
They should buy wandrer or do something similar, I love the ability to find roads I‘ve never ridden.
I have never used Strava, have been a Garmin only user, perhaps with these changes I may start using them. Thanks for sharing this video!
I'd say to not worry about getting Strava. Garmin's free features are better than the stuff that Strava puts behind a paywall. For me, Strava is only to see activities of my goofy friends that for some reason decided to overspend on an iwatch... 🤣
I really like the night time heat map because I really like riding on my local dirt roads at night and Im really curious how my patterns changes lol
Awesome they’ll finally sort the KOM’s out! So many „finished the ride in my car” KOM’s out there it takes the edge off some of the fun. Also I’d say HR should be mandatory in order to even be allowed to compete!
Love your shirt. I’m a native Washingtonian. 🌲🌲🌲
Me too! Born in Seattle!
Hooray for fixing the leaderboard!
I don’t know how Strava hasn’t added in a feature to show people with power meters only on leaderboards
Or just mark them as unverified
Or maybe even better: show little power and/or heart symbols when there are power and/or heart rate data in the corresponding activity.
@@froesche5 my point is, give the option to only show people who use power meters on the leaderboards to eliminate more of the cheaters so you don’t have to keep manually flagging e-bikes or cars all the time. Sure it wouldn’t rid all of the cheaters but it’ll make a decent dent.
Because not everyone can afford or wants a power meter?
@@andydt82 yeah hence add the OPTION if you want to exclude those without a power meter on the leaderboard. Just like you can exclude by weight, year, etc when you view a segment
hi DC rainmaker, I think Strava hears your voice more then mine. That's why I would like you to ask them to add a new running sport. I do canicross (running attached to a dog that pulls you forward)
Today I don't have an option to chose a special sport for this so my canicross runs are in the normals running sport. Ive stopped to put any of my canicross runs public because I've got flagged for cheating more then once, while I don't have a real option to choose the right sport, normal running is today the best option in all the sports to categorise my canicrossruns, because I do run at that moment (be it "supported").
Im just an average runner, when I run without my dogs, I run 5min/km. So I never get to the alltime bests in segments. But in canicross, I run under 4min/km (trough the woods, so not even on straight roads) (sometimes even under 3:20/km on fast routes).
So it is a huge difference. So with canicross, in the past (when my settings were to have all just public), I've managed to get first spots in some segments. Which isn't fair since it is a different (faster) sport than normal running.... But today I don't have a choice to put it under normal running, and I'm forced to leave them all private if I don't want to cheat the leaderboards....
And the sport is more and more popular. So the problems with canicrossers messing up leaderboards in the running segment will only get more frequent. Since all of them now have no other option than to do it under normal running.....
Oh, and this sport is also done with a bike (being pulled by a dog while mountainbike trough the woods)... They could set it under e-bike, but that's still also not really the same thing.
This has been on the wish list for years... don't hold your breath
Same problem on winter with skijoering
Well I have to give strava 10 out out 10 for listening to there customers and being open to looking at all good and bad complaints, if all companies did this it’s better for the customers that use them, enjoyed watching as always 🥳🥳🥳
Strava needs to have the ability to detect e-bikes when it comes to top times in segments, both overall and by Age Group
Thank you
It *is* a bit frustrating to see KOMs on steep climbs at some incredible 60+ mph speed. 🤨😆
I hope we'll be able to disable the Athlete Intelligence thing. I don't want yet another device trying to coach me or give me feedback. The rest of the features sound cool though, especially dark mode :)
Hello from Redmond!
We're getting Strava Dark Mode before GTA VI. Wow.
Great shirt!
How about the ability to make a Segment out of a lap? It would be so much easier to create a segment that way instead of those tiny maps/pins🙏
Segments on the Apple Watch like Garmin has please!!! It’s all I want in life!
I stopped Strava like 4 years ago. It was turning every single nice enjoyable ride into a competition, into a social network post. I stopped Strava because my values are not aligned with them, but it has improved my quality of ride. I ride for the ride, not for the upcoming post.
Now let us turn off the Weekly Snapshot please!
night stalker, I mean heat map mode sounds like it could backfire like flybys
Seem like nice updates.
Strava: we know we took our time implementing dark mode.
Fitbit: hold my beer.
awesome, finally!
I’d really like to be able to pick what sports contribute to my goals. For example I want a “total cycling” goal which includes EMTB. At the moment I have to have them separated. I also don’t think you could have total time across dissimilar disciplines (as if you were training for a triathlon and wanted a total time goal for everything).
The problem is Emtb is not a discipline, it's the opposite of.
@@neiltwaterhouse you can hold that view. My suggestion wouldn’t affect you. But I value my emtb miles no less than road, Zwift or analogue MTB; so I want to be able to include them in the same goal for the year.
@@neiltwaterhouseYet more people are into e-bikeing whether mountain, cycling or gravel, whether you like it or not it is growing in popularity.
I would love vo2max calculations/algorithms. Am not sure about the fitness score ..
Really wish I wouldn’t have to tag my commute. It would be nice that after tagging the exact same route like 3 times as a commute it would just list it as a commute from that point on.
Use ActivityFix, it's free. You can create custom rules and auto update your activities based on those rules. I automatically tag mine as a commute when I use any garmin profile that contains "Commute" in the name. It also automatically assigns which shoes/bike based on what ANT+ sensors are available from the activity.
DC really embracing the art of the thumbnail
I'm really happy with this one! It was sorta an accident too!
Also thanks for reminding me to step out of paid Strava. I just don't use their features other than staying in contact with ex-colleagues who sport
Impressive, new CEO hitting the ground running ;-)
Crawling* not a single one of these features is impressive.
Wish they supported skipping, I only see that on Garmin
won't the bad guys look at the night heat map and exploit that pretty quick?
Does it really take AI to calculate that when the activity name of the segment-topping time is “Driving Test”, and the “runner” was twice the speed of Usain Bolt, it should be removed? Doesn’t seem all that complicated to me, but what do I know?!
I really wonder what tech stack they use for their mobile apps, as it's really straightforward to implement dark mode in a mobile app. It's not as if Strava has 100000 screens that they need to check.
I hope, really hope, that we can have units per activity. I don't want my bike rides to be converted to km because that's my default units used for running & swimming.
Cycling is a metric sport. Freedom units do not apply.
@@MrScrofulous Thanks for your input. I'll be sure to ask you for advice on investments and life choices. 🤦
Any indication on when they will start to use the additional metrics recorded by the Apple Watch yet?
Currently any activities recorded and uploaded via Apple direct are missing metrics such as power and running dynamics. The same activity can be synced to Strava via a 3rd party app and the metrics are then included.
I run almost exclusively at night, 4-630 am so a night heat map is cool.
Love that shirt!
Team Seattle! Was born there. Here's the shirt though: cottonbureau.com/p/23YT22/shirt/washington-the-evergreen-state#/6725448/tee-men-standard-tee-envy-tri-blend-s
@@Dcrainmaker That's awesome! I love it there! Honestly, Seattle sports is one of my biggest passions in life, aside from my wife!
I made my website obey the system settings for light and dark. It was a one line change. Thank you, Bootstrap.
Cancelled strava when they trippled prices never looked back.
I always hit mute activity on all short warm ups or cool downs. Then if someone is on your profile they can see them and they don't clog peoples feeds. Also people should know how to delete mistakes and crop KOM's gotten with your car. So annoying. My other gripe for years now is bring back live segments for downhills! Get rid of the ones that have stop signs or lights but let us use this feature on long downhills and especially on dirt descents! They truly are great training aids for serious riders.
The level of innovation…
1. Sort shoes alphabetically on mobile.
2. Use stopwatch time on non-GPS (mill, trainer, pool). Now, it calculates like race mode (at least with myPolar).
3. Allow advertising for races to local athletes. I’d rather give my $ here than to Zuck. Easier, I think, to target than Meta.
I'd like them to add a feature to the mapping function where you can enter estimated avg speed to quicklu calculate how long a ride might take. I use an online calculator but it would be nice if it was built in.
Or just do some mental math
Between sunset and sunrise seems like it would include a lot of morning activities right around sunrise. Not exactly the intention I think.
Not sure what is their exact goal but might work great for autumn/winter period when the sun sets around 1600...1700 and sunrise is around 07...08.
Awesome that you got a sponsor 👍
More junk in the videos. Not good for the viewers
@@fraserbillythat you can skip and supplies the channel with more money and encourages them to make more videos
@UnseenHero Ray hasn't worked a proper job in years. He's always travelling to exotic locations for videos. I don't think we need to worry about him.
Personally I prefer the blog posts than the videos anyway. Quicker to get the relevant info. Although some things are better shown in video form.
I'm sure Ray gets lots of requests for sponsors, but he doesn't accept from someone who makes products he reviews. I was thinking a Pizza Oven would be good - but I think he went and reviewed one.
we want ActivityFix built in, set the equipment based on the sensors :p
How about an average Power algorithm that somewhat matches Wahoo and Training Peaks and Garmin? The Strava power number are on a different planet!
Still wearing that Oura Ray. Surely you must find it useful, could do an updated vid on it?
Took a while :)
Still no kJ for energy burnt hey. "but but but that's not what's used in Ameeeeerrriiiicccaaaaaa 😭😭😭"
You say in 4:42 that we'll be able to hide "start time"?
This is a much requested feature nowadays but it's not available. Does this mean they are implementing it?
That’s their quote from the press release, so I’d assume so. Waiting for them to upload the full keynote.
Strava needs to introduce a dot watchers style feature for segments so you can compare your segment speed to another riders
BRUH WHERE IS MULTISPORT?!
Still no ebike leaderboards or segments using the existing segment dataset. How hard can that be to implement? 😔
Maybe because it would be so easy to make it unfair with "unlocked" or big aftermarket motors? I mean you can pretty easily make an electric "motorcycle" from ebay parts.
The world is healing
Strava’s new trick for price increase > Straight up-play for sympathy
IMO free Strava account is best when you already pay for a Training Peaks account.
They should let people vote on what segments show up on the map.
The strava developers are lucky they didn't get fired for accomplishing so little over so many years.
You know the devs aren’t the ones that actually setup expectations and plan out projects right.
Those poor devs are indeed lucky not to be laid off for cost cutting reasons and blame reasons even though the management was the reason why strava did absolutely nothing for several years
Firing the dev team would also count as ‘doing something’.
Sounds like a PM issue, not the devs
The one thing I want, a million times over - BRING BACK STREET VIEW ON ROUTING!
What would be great is if I could disable the notification I get literally every time I upload an activity. Makes the notifications screen next to useless
The feature to flag dubious activities is finally a thing?
I can't believe that they took so long to implement this feature.
I mean, they don't need AI to do the job for them, just get to know all of the world records (they're not that many and I know most of them from the top of my head) and flag any activity that does break them. This is so easy that I can't believe that it wasn't implemented before.
I've been preaching for this for so long, I'm tired of flagging activities of people that run or cycle faster than cars, wtf.
What does Dark Mode do for you?
Any sign of copy workout feature for thingsike yoga, weight training etc ?
Been hoping for a dispute button on running segments that were obviously done on bike. Hope the AI leaderboard helps!
I would love to see a proper elevation on activities from Apple Watch, as now it’s 10x the number from Fitness app.
I use strava in the bright mode to check my surroundings right before I get into bed 😂 no joke
Let me organize segments by power efforts. That's all I want.
They should fix the route builder feature on the phone. Got so much worse since the last update in March. The proposed routes are useless, not matching the selected options, or simply, not finding any routes around me. Before I was always finding a new/nice rout to ride/run.
Ray, i am not sure koms/qoms , local legends and such will be counted/applied if you have it on private first, and then make it public (with unpaid sub)
They get counted as soon as it goes to public. If you keep it private, it's not counted. Which, is fine.
is there Running pace calculator in Strava app? And where can I find it in app? Thanks
I had a Strava activity pop up a message “this ride looks like it might have been on an ebike. Do you want to change it?’ So it’s there I’d say
of all the things i would like to see change on Strava, drk mode doesnt even get on the leaderboard! How about getting heat map info on my bike computer (Suunto is hopeless!) How about being able to search within someone who i follows activities like i can with my own? How about being able to post a youtube link in my ride that actually works for everyone! The list goes on...
Ok counting down to price adjustments.
In the beginning of days Strava had only-dark-mode UI. But then some ignorant fools came and redesigned it.
Come on. Get to 500k subs!!!! 💪💪
My number one missing feature is the lack of native support for sensors.
They only allow heart rate sensors.
I see no reason to buy a 600€ Garmin 1040 cycling computer just to be able to use my powermeter when my phone could theoretically do the job for free.
Why doesn’t Strava support powermeters?
