  • Does locking your knees increase your risk of fainting? I often hear choral singers say that they have been advised to avoid locking their knees when performing so they don’t pass out and fall off the risers.
    I’m a voice teacher and fitness trainer, so I thought I’d better find out. I share my thoughts in this video.

      Thanks for asking! I have been restructuring my teaching practice while also having my mind blown by all of the things I have been learning about fascia-it's changing my understanding of the human movement system and how we can best train our bodies. Oh and also there was this pesky pandemic… hope you are well!

      @@huss2600 Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds and integrates most of the structures in our bodies. Understanding how our fascia works is incredibly helpful for improving movement skills, e.g. singing (and standing for choral performances) www.anatomytrains.com/fascia/

    I'm so glad to see that you're back making fresh video tutorials. I just happened to tune in to your site to see if you had any videos dealing with keeping the energy level up during the duration of a sung note, and noticed that you had just dropped a video (excuse the parlance) this very day after a full year with no videos. I'm knew to your vocal/singing tuitions but have found them so very informative. Even though I'm not a professional singer. So thank you for that, and look forward to many more. By the way, I'm not sure if you have already covered this issue in one of your more lengthy video's, as I haven't yet watched through all of them, but besides the usuals issues I have as a singer, one that stands out is a difficulty in keeping the energy level up as a note trails off, particularly on longer notes. So as the note trails off it loses energy, making it not only loose definition but also sound flat. Is this a subject that you have already dealt with. Please keep up your tutorials. Your viewership in no way represents, displays, depicts, describes how worthy your advice actually is. did I make myself clear here. So yes, please keep up these tutorials. Dont know how to include those immogies; do they have one like someone with a 'begging bowl'

      Thanks so much for your support, Jude, as well as this interesting question! This would indeed make a good topic for a video. Let me see if I can put something together.
      Meanwhile, I would invite you to investigate what is actually going on when a note you are singing loses energy. In addition to *hearing* how the sound trails off, goes flat, etc., what else is going on? Are there any physical sensations or movements that correspond to this “trailing off” that you hear? When the sound changes from focused, energized, and in tune, to something more diffuse, less energized, and flat, are there corresponding changes to your breathing? the degree of tension/energy in your body? things that may be going through your mind?
      More to the point, investigate what is actually going on when the note sounds strong, focused, energized, expressive, and in tune. Because when it’s going well, it’s because what you are doing is energetic and efficient. Find out what you are doing that is energetic and efficient, and then just keep doing that, and the note will no longer trail off.
      I realize that sounds tautological, but I find that the best pedagogical principles usually are!

      @@ClaudiaFriedlander Hi Claudia. Thanks so much for this advice, reminding me how important it is to pay attention to the minutiae in how it actually feels when we sing. It's so easy to forget this important element in singing. As a total novice to singing, I tend to sing better when I am involved emotionally, as the expression is so natural that its very much expressed like when I am in some emotional state of mind. So when we are happy, angry, sexy, humoured, there is no mistaking it in the tone of our voice. Just as a side note, I think our voice betrays more about who we are than anything else, expressing our gender, our nationality or more specifically, our locality, even our class, and more personally, who we are inside through our tone. Can't hide our sense of humour and what we laugh at, which may betray what we truely feel inside more than anything else. But to your advice, thanks so much for being so generous in your thoughts.
